Discovery-Scripps Joining Forces to Take on the Changing Digital Media Landscape

Image Source: Lwp Kommunikáció Discovery Communications has agreed to acquire Scripps Networks, but will it be enough for the two to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving–and consolidating–media landscape? By Kris Rosemann The cable TV industry is not what it was only a few short years ago, and Discovery Communications (DISCA) finally getting its hands on the assets of Scripps Networks (SNI) is only further evidence of this. Both companies have had a relative amount of success in delivering compelling programming to targeted audiences in years past via traditional pay-TV channels, but the days of tuning in to Shark Week on The Discovery Channel through your local cable provider are fading fast. The cord-cutting revolution is one that has been well-covered … Read more

Valuentum’s 3 Breakthroughs in the Field of Finance and More

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this. Valuentum Economic Castleâ„¢ Rating Update

Read: Keeping the Horse Before the Cart: Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ Rating The Economic Castle Focuses on the Magnitude of Economic Value Creation The Valuentum Economic Castle™ rating is an enhancement of the competitive advantage framework (commonly known as economic moat analysis) that has become widespread and ubiquitous within the investing world. Whereas an economic moat framework evaluates a firm on the basis of the sustainability and durability of its competitive advantages, Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ rating evaluates a firm on the basis of the firm’s future economic profit spread (return on invested capital less its weighted average cost of capital). The companies with the strongest Valuentum Economic Castle™ ratings are poised to generate the most economic value for shareholders in the … Read more

Update: Digging Into the Valuentum Dividend Cushion

Sign Up to Receive our Dividend Growth Newsletter! Add the High Yield Dividend Newsletter to Your Membership! History has revealed that the best performing stocks during the previous decades have been those that shelled out ever-increasing cash to shareholders in the form of dividends. In a recent study by Ned Davis Research, S&P 500 stocks that initiated dividends or grew them over time registered roughly a 9.6% annualized return since 1972 (through 2010), while stocks that did not pay out dividends or cut them performed poorly over the same time period.  Such analysis is difficult to ignore, and we believe investors may be well-rewarded in future periods by finding the best dividend-growth stocks out there. As such, we’ve developed a rigorous dividend investment … Read more

Revenue Growth at LinkedIn Remains Strong But Shares Are Expensive

Business networking leader LinkedIn (click ticker for report: ) reported relatively strong third quarter results last Thursday afternoon. Revenue growth continued its robust path, surging 81% year-over-year to a consensus beating $252 million. Excluding several items, earnings accelerated 267% year-over-year to $0.22 per share—more than double the consensus estimate. Unlike most firms’ non-GAAP items, which exclude “one-time” expenses, LinkedIn’s earnings exclude very real costs like stock-based compensation and amortization of intangible asset acquisitions—perhaps non-cash, but still material, in our view. Regardless, the company’s third quarter results reflected relatively strong performance. Talent (Hiring) Solutions revenue increased 95% year-over-year to $138.4 million. The segment continues to steal market share away the old line of online hiring solutions, including Monster Worldwide (click ticker … Read more

New York Times Experiences Advertising Weakness in Third Quarter

On Thursday, the New York Times (click ticker for report: ) reported terrible third-quarter results that showed weakness in both print and digital advertising revenue. New York Times’ total revenue fell 0.6% as advertising revenue dropped nearly 9% during the period. The lower revenue was compounded by a 2.3% increase in operating costs during the period, as operating profit tumbled nearly 60% to $8.5 million from $21 million in the year-ago quarter. Print and digital advertising sales fell 10.9% and 2.2%, respectively, during the quarter and overwhelmed the 7.4% increase in circulation revenue. We’ve seen advertising weakness from other online-based consumer subscription firms such as Morningstar (click ticker for report: ), and we credit this trend to the growing digital … Read more

We think those that bought equities near the bottom of this swoon may be looking to take profits at present levels. Stock Market Outlook for 2021

By Valuentum Analysts February 8, 2021 2020 was one for the history books. We covered our thoughts and reflections on the past year in our “2020 Won’t Soon Be Forgotten” article (link here), and now we are looking towards the future. Global health authorities should be able to bring an end to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic sooner than many had expected as several vaccines have already been improved for emergency use and several others appear increasingly likely to get approved. Global vaccine distribution activities are currently underway, and this should allow the world to slowly return to pre-pandemic activities. Before then, immense stimulus measures launched primarily in developed nations should support global economic activities until the public health crisis … Read more
