Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. We appreciate your membership very much!   ——————————————— About Our Name But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] “attractive”? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: “value” and “growth,”…We view that as fuzzy thinking…Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term “value investing” is redundant.                          — Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992 At Valuentum, we take Buffett’s thoughts one step further. We think the best opportunities arise from an understanding of … Read more

Update: Analyzing Valuentum’s Economic Castle Index: A Walk Forward Case Study

This article was originally published February 20, 2020. By Callum Turcan and Brian Nelson, CFA In , the Valuentum team published a paper called The Castle Trumps the Moat which sought to change the conversation around Warren Buffett’s very popular phrase “economic moat” towards one with a more quantitative grounding. The idea behind an economic moat is that companies with such a qualitative attribute should generate stronger returns than those that don’t, at least so the thinking goes, given the ability for these firms to generate competitive advantages for themselves in their respective fields (allowing for these firms to charge relatively higher prices and/or incur lower expenses, resulting in larger profit streams than “non-moaty” companies). There are two things generally … Read more

Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

Our Reports on Stocks in the Tobacco Industry

Image Source: Altria Structure of the Tobacco Industry The oligopolistic tobacco industry is attractive in a number of ways. Firms sell an “addictive” product (cigarettes and/or smokeless tobacco), have significant pricing power, generate high margins, and strong returns on invested capital. Still, declining trends in smoking in the US, threats of tobacco-related litigation, new tobacco regulation (labeling) that discourages tobacco use, and excise tax price shocks that may impact demand will always be concerns. In any case, we tend to like the structural characteristics of the tobacco industry and the shareholder-friendly policies of constituents. We’ve reallocated our resources to cover more recession-resistant stocks. See here.

Altria Keeps Smoking; Is Smokeless the Future for Big Tobacco?

Tobacco giant Altria reported another solid quarter thanks in large part to its pricing power, but big tobacco may be altering its strategy as it finds an unexpected ally. By Kris Roseman Newsletter portfolio holding and tobacco giant Altria (MO) reported a solid second quarter of 2017 with top- and bottom-line growth before the open July 27. Its quarterly strength was largely driven by pricing power, a line we’ve written many times over in recent years with respect to the tobacco industry. Cigarette volumes continue to decline–the decline was more pronounced in the second quarter of 2017 due to a large excise tax increase in California–as industry-wide volumes fell 4.5%, but Altria and its peers continue to grow the overall … Read more

Valuentum’s 3 Breakthroughs in the Field of Finance and More

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this. The Bottom Line: Altria’s Translates to Dividend Growth

Image Source: Peyri Herrera Altria continues to successfully battle a challenging demand environment for cigarette volumes across its industry, and the company has once again rolled out expectations for meaningful earnings-per-share growth in 2017. Altria’s stock is among the best performers in history – find out why. By Kris Rosemann Some readers may be surprised that (Altria) is a top performer for investors in the face of the onslaught of government restrictions and legal actions that have cost the firm tens of billions of dollars and threaten the cigarette manufacturer with bankruptcy. But in the capital markets, bad news for the firm often is transformed into good news for investors. Many shun the stock in the company and fear that … Read more
