Buffalo Wild Wings: It’s Time to Start Delivering?

Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Buffalo Wild Wings is battling a challenging operating environment. Management is searching for ways to shore up performance, but some shareholders are getting antsy. Is a BWLD-WING deal in the cards?  By Kris Rosemann It’s no secret that the restaurant industry has struggled of late, “Restaurant Traffic – What’s Going On?” “Examining Same-Store Sales in the Restaurant Industry.” Best Ideas Newsletter holding Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD) was not spared the pain in 2016, as same-store sales fell more than 2% at both company-owned and franchised restaurants from 2015 levels, though management is optimistic for 2017 after a positive read on the measure through the first several weeks of the year, “Best Ideas Roundup: Visa, Facebook, … Read more

Rivals Gaining Ground Against B-Dubs?

By Brian Nelson, CFA It turns out that franchisees selling restaurants back to the franchisor is the red flag we knew it was. If you recall, Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD) announced deal-related expenses related to the acquisition of more than 40 franchised locations in Texas, New Mexico, and Hawaii, “We’ll Be Looking to Add to B-Dubs Sometime after the Drop (October 2015),” and at the time, we were willing to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt that this wasn’t the red flag it turned out to be. We were wrong. After all, if owning a B-Dubs is so hot, then why would the franchisee be looking to sell it back to the company, and why to the company? … Read more

We’ll Be Looking to Add to B-Dubs Sometime after the Drop

We are disappointed in the market’s reaction to Buffalo Wild Wings’ (BWLD) third-quarter results, released after the close October 28, if only because we have a very, very small “starter” position in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. We typically ease into newsletter positions over time, unless we’re making a high-conviction call, and while we know we may have disappointed some that took full positions on the news of the addition of B-Dubs, we were “hoping” for an opportunity like this, to accumulate more shares of the company at a lower price. It looks like that lower price will happen, but consistent with the Valuentum Buying Index methodology, we’ll now be waiting for the stock to turn upward and for momentum … Read more

3 Reasons Why Buffalo Wild Wings Is a Long-Term Winner

#1: Buffalo Wild Wings Has Captured the Hearts of Children “Plant the Brownie acorn and the Kodak oak will grow.” George Eastman knew all too well about winning the hearts of children. The inventor-entrepreneur popularized flexible film in the 1880s, and his first Kodak camera was available for purchase by the end of the decade. But the breakthrough was too expensive, and it wasn’t until the Kodak Brownie, released a dozen years later, that photography was democratized. The camera sold for just a $1 and was easy to use. But importantly, Eastman focused his marketing and advertising efforts on children. When these children grew up, the seeds had been planted, and Eastman had built an empire. The Kodak oak grew. … Read more

Stock Market Outlook for 2021

By Valuentum Analysts February 8, 2021 2020 was one for the history books. We covered our thoughts and reflections on the past year in our “2020 Won’t Soon Be Forgotten” article (link here), and now we are looking towards the future. Global health authorities should be able to bring an end to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic sooner than many had expected as several vaccines have already been improved for emergency use and several others appear increasingly likely to get approved. Global vaccine distribution activities are currently underway, and this should allow the world to slowly return to pre-pandemic activities. Before then, immense stimulus measures launched primarily in developed nations should support global economic activities until the public health crisis … Read more
