The Resilience of the US Digital Advertising Market and Alphabet

Image Shown: Shares of Alphabet Inc Class C shares, a top-weighted holding in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, have performed very well over the past year. Going forward, we see room for significant capital appreciation upside as the digital advertising market has proven to be very resilient of late. By Callum Turcan To ride out the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, we continue to prefer large-cap tech companies with pristine balance sheets, strong cash flow profiles, and promising long-term growth outlooks. Ideally, we are searching for companies with outlooks that are supported by secular growth tailwinds, allowing for several winners in their respective end markets. Digital advertising is a prime example of a resilient high-quality market that is supported by secular … Read more

Facebook’s Promising Growth Outlook

Image Shown: Top-weighted Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Facebook Inc has seen its stock price surge higher over the past year and we see room for considerably more capital appreciation upside. Facebook’s growth trajectory will depend in large part on how effective the firm is at generating more revenue per active user, especially in markets outside of the US & Canada. The emergence of a large global middle class should assist in these endeavors. We view Facebook’s growth outlook quite favorably and continue to be big fans of the social media giant. By Callum Turcan Facebook Inc (FB) continues to be one of our favorite companies out there. Shares of Facebook are included as a top-weighted holding in our Best … Read more

Facebook’s Growth Story Continues

Image Shown: Shares of Facebook Inc are up ~23% year-to-date as of the end of normal trading hours on August 3. We continue to like shares of FB as a top-weighted holding in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, and we see room for meaningful capital appreciate upside. By Callum Turcan On July 30, Facebook Inc (FB) reported second quarter 2020 earnings that beat consensus top- and bottom-line estimates by a mile. Advertising revenue was up 10% year-over-year last quarter, a slower growth rate than the 17% year-over-year increase posted during the first quarter of this year but still very impressive given the headwinds facing the digital advertising space due to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic. Facebook’s revenues and bottom-line grew … Read more

Pinterest Sees Interest in its Social Media Site Grow During COVID-19 Pandemic

Image Source: Pinterest Inc – Fourth Quarter of 2019 Earnings IR Presentation By Callum Turcan Social media firm Pinterest Inc (PINS) published an operational and financial update after the market close April 7 that caught a lot of investor’s eyes. Pinterest reported that its user base, measured by monthly active users (‘MAUs’), had continued to grow sequentially in the first quarter of 2020 on both a domestic and international basis. While the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has likely negatively impacted its digital advertising business, Pinterest is communicating to investors that over the longer term, its social media offering is growing in popularity which supports growth down the road. Financial and Operational Update During the final three months of 2019, Pinterest … Read more

Cisco Delivers, Deere Disappoints, Pinterest Plummets, More Reports

Cisco Delivers, Deere Disappoints, Pinterest Plummets, More Reports — In alphabetical order by ticker symbol: AMAT, BIDU, CSCO, DE, FLO, INTC, JACK, PINS, WMT — Applied Materials (AMAT): Applied Materials reported better-than-expected second-quarter fiscal 2019 results May 16, but the headline print wasn’t that exciting. Revenue dropped 23%, its operating margin gave back 6.3 percentage points, and diluted earnings per share dropped 34%, but the results were “toward the top-end of (its) guidance range, reflecting solid execution across the company in a business environment that remains challenging.” The chip-maker’s risk profile is too high for our taste, and we just have a hard time getting comfortable with the instability of operating results. We value shares of Applied Materials at $48 each, … Read more

Cash-Based Sources of Intrinsic Value for Meta Platforms and PayPal Remain Strong

Image Shown: Shares of Meta Platforms Inc (blue line) and PayPal Holdings Inc (orange line) have staged a nice comeback during the past month, as of the start of April 2022. By Callum Turcan Rising interest rates and the impact that has had on the market’s discount rate implictly used within the enterprise cash flow pricing process has pressured the value of equities with long free-cash-flow growth tails–stocks that are expected to grow at a meaningful premium over global economic growth over the coming decades. The rapid increase in the 10-year Treasury rate, no doubt, has had a profound impact on the equity values of long-duration cash-flow companies such as those held in the ultra-speculative ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), for … Read more

Stock Market Outlook for 2021

By Valuentum Analysts February 8, 2021 2020 was one for the history books. We covered our thoughts and reflections on the past year in our “2020 Won’t Soon Be Forgotten” article (link here), and now we are looking towards the future. Global health authorities should be able to bring an end to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic sooner than many had expected as several vaccines have already been improved for emergency use and several others appear increasingly likely to get approved. Global vaccine distribution activities are currently underway, and this should allow the world to slowly return to pre-pandemic activities. Before then, immense stimulus measures launched primarily in developed nations should support global economic activities until the public health crisis … Read more

VBI Ratings Not as Impressive As We Would Have Liked in 2022

Image: How the VBI rating system has ranked equities so far this year. By Brian Nelson, CFA At Valuentum, we use the Valuentum Buying Index (VBI) to source ideas into diversified simulated newsletter portfolios, and the VBI may be most applicable to the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, where we generally like to include ideas when they register a high VBI rating and remove them when they register a low VBI rating. We always use the VBI in a portfolio setting and never by itself. But what about the Valuentum Buying Index ratings, themselves? How did they “perform” during 2022 in one of the worst years for stock market investors in history? Well, not as spectacular as we would have … Read more
