Growing Competitive Pressures, Leverage Drive Our Reduced Fair Value Estimate of CVS Health (Walgreens, Too)

By Callum Turcan On November 9, we reduced our fair value estimate of CVS Health Corporation (CVS) (which operates pharmacies, walk-in medical clinics, retail centers, and a large health insurance business). Our new fair value estimate is $55 per share, down from $73 per share previously. CVS Health’s 52-week share price range has been $52-$77, and the company yields 2.7% at the time of this writing. We recently wrote an article here explaining some of the major broad-based drivers behind why fair value estimates can, do, and should change over time as future expectations change. From our perspective, CVS Health’s near- and medium-term outlook has become increasingly stressed. Though investors have bid up shares of CVS in the wake of … Read more

UnitedHealth Remains on Our Radar for Dividend Growth Newsletter Portfolio

Image: On a price-only basis, from the beginning of 2008, UnitedHealth’s shares have advanced ~600%, while the S&P 500 has increased ~150%. The measurement period covers both the Obama and Trump administrations. By Brian Nelson, CFA UnitedHealth Group (UNH) is a name that we don’t dedicate a lot of resources to, as we tend to prefer diversified exposure to the healthcare arena in both the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio via the Healthcare Select Sector SPDR (XLV)–UnitedHealth Group is a ~8% weighting in the ETF at the time of this writing. Nonetheless, this Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) component has been under material accumulation of late based on its pricing action. Year-to-date, on a price-only basis, … Read more

June Dividend Growth Newsletter & Intrinsic Value Investing

“But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] “attractive”? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: “value” and “growth,”…We view that as fuzzy thinking…Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term “value investing” is redundant.“  —                — Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992 — By Brian Nelson, CFA — To add our new options commentary to your membership, please register here ($500/year). — Hi everyone!  — We remain unequivocally bullish on the markets and intrinsic value investing. We believe value today rests within companies that have strong net cash positions (all cash less short- and long-term debt) and solid expected future free cash flows … Read more

DXC Technology Looks Super Cheap

While DXC Technology is experiencing top-line pressure due to weakness at its legacy businesses, its digital growth trajectory continues to look promising. Very strong free cash flows and a modest dividend policy leave plenty of room for upside as it relates to future dividend increases, particularly if share buybacks are scaled back.  By Callum Turcan DXC Technology Company (DXC) can be quickly defined as an end-to-end IT services company that offers anything from cloud application and management services, analytics, and IT security services to traditional application management and maintenance offerings. The company seeks to enable enterprises to not only transition to the digital age but scale up their capabilities with the help of DXC Technology, a process aided by such … Read more

CVS Health Under Review – Hit by a Storm of Negativity

Image Source: Mike Mozart We are putting the fair value estimate of CVS Health under review while we re-evaluate the competitive environment and reassess the company’s appetite for leverage, which could impact dividend health. Brian Nelson, CFA Boy has CVS Health (CVS) been hit by a storm of negativity in recent months. After we added it to the newsletter portfolios, the company has gotten caught up in a whirlwind of investor concern regarding Amazon’s (AMZN) probable entrance in the pharmacy market. We noted as much in our September 30 note, “Amazon Casts a Large Shadow Over the Pharmacy Market,” and we said that even we were “growing more and more cautious on shares,” as we pointed to Amazon’s potential acquisition … Read more

Evaluating the Industry Structure of Managed Care Organizations

Structure of the Managed Care Industry The managed care organization (MCO) and health insurance/benefits industry is concentrated, competitive, and still consolidating. The largest publicly-traded MCO by members is WellPoint (WLP), which serves more than 66.5 million individuals through its health plans, but UnitedHealth (UNH), Aetna (AET), Humana (HUM), Cigna (CI), Centene (CNC), Health Net (HNT), and WellCare (WCG) are other key players in the industry. Revenues are generated primarily from insurance premiums and, to a lesser extent, from administrative fees and net investment income. Expenses are dominated by benefit expense (the cost of health care services), though overhead (selling, general and administrative expense) is also a material portion of the cost structure of the group. Operating margins for some constituents have hit … Read more

Nelson: The 16 Most Important Steps To Understand The Stock Market

A previous version of this article appeared on our website July 21, 2013. Refreshed and updated throughout, as of July 2018. By Brian Nelson, CFA After earning my MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and training stock and credit analysts from large organizations over the past decade or so, I have heard just about every question (though I admit I am still surprised by many things and remain a very humble student of the markets). I’ve also spent years perfecting the discounted cash flow process for large research organizations such as Morningstar and studied under one of the most famed aggressive growth investors of all time, Richard Driehaus. My knowledge runs the gamut from value through … Read more
