Is the Time Right to Invest in Home Improvement?

The US housing market has been hot this summer. Both purchases of previously-owned homes and residential housing starts reached their highest monthly levels in the month of July since 2007. The improved demand has been driven by a resilient labor market, historically-low mortgage rates and “pent-up” demand from the Great Recession. Purchases of previously-owned homes advanced 2% sequentially in July to an annualized rate of 5.59 million houses, handily beating consensus estimates of 5.43 million. The increased levels of demand come despite limited support from first-time buyers, however. Millennials, now coming of age, are making their first “rent-versus-buy” decisions, and many, having witnessed the housing bubble burst late last decade, aren’t viewing ownership as the wise investment decision that their … Read more

Valuentum Economic Castleâ„¢ Rating Update

Read: Keeping the Horse Before the Cart: Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ Rating The Economic Castle Focuses on the Magnitude of Economic Value Creation The Valuentum Economic Castle™ rating is an enhancement of the competitive advantage framework (commonly known as economic moat analysis) that has become widespread and ubiquitous within the investing world. Whereas an economic moat framework evaluates a firm on the basis of the sustainability and durability of its competitive advantages, Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ rating evaluates a firm on the basis of the firm’s future economic profit spread (return on invested capital less its weighted average cost of capital). The companies with the strongest Valuentum Economic Castle™ ratings are poised to generate the most economic value for shareholders in the … Read more

Sign Up to Receive our Dividend Growth Newsletter! Add the High Yield Dividend Newsletter to Your Membership! History has revealed that the best performing stocks during the previous decades have been those that shelled out ever-increasing cash to shareholders in the form of dividends. In a recent study by Ned Davis Research, S&P 500 stocks that initiated dividends or grew them over time registered roughly a 9.6% annualized return since 1972 (through 2010), while stocks that did not pay out dividends or cut them performed poorly over the same time period.  Such analysis is difficult to ignore, and we believe investors may be well-rewarded in future periods by finding the best dividend-growth stocks out there. As such, we’ve developed a rigorous dividend investment … Read more

Home Depot’s Third-Quarter Performance Better Than Lowe’s

On Tuesday, Home Depot (HD) reported excellent third-quarter results. Total sales advanced 7.4% from the third quarter of last year as comparable store sales jumped by a similar amount – comparable sales for the US were 8.2%. Operating income jumped an impressive 32.3% from the same period a year ago, while net earnings for the period increased 28.4% on an adjusted basis, to $0.95 per share. The top-line strength and significant operating leverage was on display during the quarter, and Home Depot was quite positive for the remainder of fiscal 2013, too: Based on year-to-date performance and outlook for the remainder of the year, the company raised its fiscal 2013 sales guidance and now expects sales to be up approximately … Read more

PPG Posts Record Third Quarter Results; Our Favorite Idea in the Chemicals Industry

Our favorite fundamental chemical idea PPG Industries (PPG) reported record third-quarter results Thursday. Net sales jumped 17% versus the prior year (about 4% organic expansion), and the firm posted record adjusted earnings per diluted share from continuing operations of $2.44, up an impressive 30%+ from the year-ago period (shown right). We liked the operating leverage inherent in performance as well as the firm’s ability to hit the ground running with impactful transactions. The company noted that aerospace and automotive OEM coatings, both up about 10%, were the key drivers behind PPG’s top-line expansion, though other business lines did contribute as well, including the company’s architectural coatings operations. Volume trends improved in all regions of the world, and the firm’s cost-reduction … Read more

Nelson: The 16 Most Important Steps To Understand The Stock Market

A previous version of this article appeared on our website July 21, 2013. Refreshed and updated throughout, as of July 2018. By Brian Nelson, CFA After earning my MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and training stock and credit analysts from large organizations over the past decade or so, I have heard just about every question (though I admit I am still surprised by many things and remain a very humble student of the markets). I’ve also spent years perfecting the discounted cash flow process for large research organizations such as Morningstar and studied under one of the most famed aggressive growth investors of all time, Richard Driehaus. My knowledge runs the gamut from value through … Read more
