Image Source: Intel Corporation – November 2019 State of 5G Presentation  By Callum Turcan The rollout of 5G telecommunication networks is upon us and we want to draw our members’ attention to some of the key companies with meaningful exposure to this space. Many are excited about what opportunities 5G technology could enable. Background On July 23, AT&T Inc (T) announced its 5G network in the US was operational nationwide and that effective August 7, both consumers and businesses with certain packages would have 5G access “at no additional cost” which included customers with AT&T Unlimited Starter, Extra, Elite, AT&T Business Unlimited Web-Only and Starter wireless plans. … Read more

Nelson: The 16 Most Important Steps To Understand The Stock Market

A previous version of this article appeared on our website July 21, 2013. Refreshed and updated throughout, as of July 2018. By Brian Nelson, CFA After earning my MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and training stock and credit analysts from large organizations over the past decade or so, I have heard just about every question (though I admit I am still surprised by many things and remain a very humble student of the markets). I’ve also spent years perfecting the discounted cash flow process for large research organizations such as Morningstar and studied under one of the most famed aggressive growth investors of all time, Richard Driehaus. My knowledge runs the gamut from value through … Read more

Tesla: Can a Savvy Start-up Become the Next Great American Auto Company?

Key Takeaways: ·        The Model S is a breathtaking car, and its positive reception well-deserved. Motor Trend’s 2013 “Car of the Year” doesn’t begin to explain how great this car truly is. We went to a dealership to check it out for ourselves. ·        Tesla’s (TSLA) brand has low penetration. Considering the automaker will ship around 20,000-21,000 units this year (less than 0.1% of the US auto market), we think the company is still relatively unknown outside the finance and environmental circles. ·        Battery Cost Issues? We think the bear argument that battery costs might not fall fast enough is valid. However, we tend to bet on innovation in the long run. In our view, Tesla will sort out the issue. ·        The long-term … Read more

GM and Ford Tune Up Operations for the Future of Automaking

Image source: GM first-quarter earnings report The US auto behemoths continue to place a greater importance on efficient operations and the health of their bottom lines as the industry may be reaching a relative peak in terms of light vehicle production for this economic cycle and as the future of the auto landscape remains uncertain. By Kris Rosemann Key Takeaways Both GM and Ford are keeping a keen eye on the future of the evolving auto and personal transportation markets. We continue to like shares of GM relative to Ford, even as we say we like the direction in which Ford appears to be heading. GM’s shares are trading at an ultra-low earnings multiple, and it pays a very strong … Read more

General Motors Cuts Guidance on Higher Input Costs

Simulated newsletter portfolio idea General Motors cut its full-year guidance due to higher than expected commodity cost increases and devaluation of key currencies in South America. Peers Ford and Fiat Chrysler also lowered 2018 guidance measures following a tough second quarter for the group. By Kris Rosemann The July 25 trading session was a tough one for simulated newsletter portfolio idea General Motors (GM) as it faced meaningful external pressures on its business and lowered guidance for 2018. Greater-than-expected impacts from rising commodity prices and currency devaluations in Brazil and Argentina were the primary drivers behind the guidance cut. However, some of those pressures may be easing as President Trump has reportedly agreed to work with the European Commission in … Read more

2,350-2,750 on the S&P? Could the Coronavirus Catalyze a Financial Crisis?

Image: We think a rather modest sell-off in the market to the target range of 2,350-2,750 on the S&P 500 is rather reasonable in the wake of one of the biggest economic shocks since the Global Financial Crisis. The chart above shows how far markets have advanced since 2011, and an adjustment lower to the target range of 2,350-2,750 is rather modest in such a context and would only bring markets to late 2018 levels (note red box as the target range). The range reflects ~16x S&P 500 12-month forward earnings estimates, as of February 14, adjusted down 10% due to COVID-19. When companies like Visa talk about a couple percentage points taken off of growth rates, one knows that … Read more
