Valuentum’s 3 Breakthroughs in the Field of Finance and More

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this. Lots to Like About Intel’s 2016: 3D XPoint and Altera!

Newsletter portfolio holding Intel (INTC) continues to change with the world around it. An increasingly smart and connected world offers significant opportunities for the company, but those opportunities will not be presented without obstacles to hurdle. It didn’t work out so well for the price of Intel the week of its report, as it released a somewhat cautious outlook on a day of a big market swoon, but we still expect some good things ahead from the chip giant. In fact, we continue to like the holding in the context of achieving the goals of the newsletter portfolios. In the fourth quarter of 2015, results released January 14, Intel reported record revenue of $14.9 billion, though the top line grew … Read more

Intel Looks to Mobile to Overcome PC Weakness

Intel (INTC) reduced its revenue guidance March 12, dropping expectations for the first quarter to $12.8 billion from $13.7 billion. The world’s largest semiconductor chip maker pointed to weaker-than-expected PC demand, as well as lower inventory levels in the PC supply chain. As far as Intel is concerned, management cited a lack of Windows XP refreshes from small and medium businesses, along with worsening macroeconomic conditions and currency headwinds as main factors in the decline.  Despite the reduction in revenue guidance, the mid-point gross margin expectations remain at ~60% for the period due to higher average selling prices offsetting any profit deleveraging caused by the lower expected volume of PC sales. The firm’s R&D and MG&A spending and depreciation expectations … Read more

One Dividend Suspension and Five Other Disappointments

The wreckage in crude oil prices has left many in awe of the range of probable outcomes for the commodity even over a multi-month period, let alone a multi-year period. The precipitous decline has forced high-yielding equities such as Linn Energy (LINE) and Seadrill (SDRL) to slash their income payouts and begin the long road to recovery, as it has pushed the backs of others, including Legacy Reserves (LGCY), against the wall. Investor confidence, once lost, however may never be regained, and management teams know this. A dividend cut will always be the last resort, but crude oil hasn’t been the only commodity falling out of favor. Copper and iron ore have also seen much better days, too. January 26 … Read more

Valuentum Economic Castleâ„¢ Rating Update

Read: Keeping the Horse Before the Cart: Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ Rating The Economic Castle Focuses on the Magnitude of Economic Value Creation The Valuentum Economic Castle™ rating is an enhancement of the competitive advantage framework (commonly known as economic moat analysis) that has become widespread and ubiquitous within the investing world. The companies with the strongest Valuentum Economic Castle™ ratings are poised to generate the most economic value for shareholders in the … Read more

Encouraging News Regarding Worldwide PC Shipments

You may not have noticed it, but Intel (INTC) has rallied nearly seven points since the bottom established in late 2012 – that’s roughly a 40%+ upward advance through today. On Wednesday, International Data Corp (IDC) released some very good news for the PC supply chain. Though worldwide personal computer (PC) shipments continued to decline during the first quarter of 2014, the pace of the fall was nearly a percentage point better than expected (-4.4% versus -5.3% forecast, -5.6% in the fourth quarter, and -7.3% in the third quarter). Much of the upside surprise during the period came from mature commercial markets as technical support for Windows XP expired. After eight consecutive quarters of declines in worldwide PC shipments, we’re … Read more

PC Shipments Expected To Stabilize

According to data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker on December 2, personal computer (PC) shipments are now expected to drop more than 10% in 2013, slightly below the previous projection of -9.7%. Though 2013 will be the most severe yearly contraction on record, this news wasn’t the key takeaway. Instead, it was expectations for stabilizing demand by 2015 that provided a shot of optimism to the PC supply chain (see image below). Image Source: IDC The commentary provided by IDC was not terribly exciting, but market expectations are closer to the PC going the way of the dodo than stabilizing at just over 300 million units (roughly 2008 levels). We continue to believe that … Read more
