3 Undervalued Stocks to Consider Buying Now

Dear readers:   With the markets retracing most of their recent drawdown, we’re taking a victory lap as we didn’t panic, nor should have you. We highlighted our wait-and-see approach amidst the worst of the pullback, and we expect the Magnificent 7 (large cap growth and big cap tech) to continue to propel the markets higher, as they have done.   We’ve been busy rolling valuation models as we finetune our assumptions for a great number of companies under coverage. While doing so, we came across three undervalued stocks that are also included in the simulated newsletter portfolios. We think they’re prime for highlight.   The three stocks are UnitedHealth Group (UNH), Nvidia (NVDA) and Alphabet (GOOG). We spend a lot of time on discounted cash-flow valuation, … Read more

Palantir’s Fourth-Quarter Results Showcase Strong Trends in Artificial Intelligence

Image: Palantir’s revenue continues to march higher, and the company’s performance continues to showcase the growing strength in artificial intelligence. Source: Palantir By Brian Nelson, CFA Palantir Technologies (PLTR) has three core software platforms called Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo that “provide the critical infrastructure needed to integrate (its) customers’ data and operations and run their software in virtually any environment (Form 10-K).” On February 5, the firm reported solid fourth-quarter results that showed revenue growing 20% on a year-over-year basis and GAAP net income coming in at $93 million, representing the fifth consecutive quarter that the firm has driven positive GAAP profits. We liked Palantir’s quarterly results, but we wanted to bring to members’ attention the commentary surrounding artificial intelligence [AI]: … Read more

There Will Be Volatility

By Brian Nelson, CFA Last year, 2022, was a big test for equity investors, and the downside volatility that we witnessed during the year wasn’t comfortable, to say the least. Following the COVID-19 crash and rebound during 2020, and then the market surge in 2021, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say many investors’ heads are probably still spinning from all the volatility witnessed to start this decade. That said, part of what we’ve been warning about the past few years with respect to the equity market, especially in Value Trap, is that the proliferation of price-agnostic trading (e.g. quant, machine/algorithmic trading, etc.) will only lead to more and more market volatility, so while we were somewhat surprised by last … Read more

Expect Huge Equity Returns This Decade, Much More Volatility However

Image: Without question, the stylistic area of large cap growth has been the place to be for almost 15 years now. We think it remains the place to be. Brian Nelson, CFA The game has changed folks. The flooding of the markets with liquidity during the Great Financial Crisis [GFC] and the bailout of the banks in 2007-2009 marked the beginning of a new “regime” that we now live in. It wasn’t until the collapse of the markets during COVID-19, however, that the belief these markets would continue to move ever higher was reinforced. Where is the risk? What does “Lehman” even mean anymore? “Lehman” was not risk – “Lehman” was a generational buying opportunity. What was the worst global … Read more

Nvidia Rockets Higher to Propel Large Cap Growth

Image: Nvidia powers higher after releasing better-than-expected second-quarter fiscal 2024 guidance. The company continues to be a driver behind the outperformance of large cap growth as a stylistic area. By Brian Nelson, CFA We haven’t seen a quarterly guidance beat like this since Synaptics (SYNA) put up a monster quarter when Apple (AAPL) started using its innovative click-wheel technology in the first-generation iPod, almost 20 years ago. Nvidia Corp.’s (NVDA) outlook for the second quarter of its fiscal 2024 was phenomenal thanks to tremendous interest in its chips that power artificial intelligence [AI]. We expect a material increase in our fair value estimate of Nvidia, but shares remain quite pricey, in our view. Revenue during Nvidia’s fiscal second quarter is … Read more

Dividend Growth Giant Lockheed Martin’s Share Price Surges 35%+ in 2022

Image: Lockheed Martin’s shares have been bolstered by a robust share buyback program during the fourth quarter of 2022. Though we still expect shares to be resilient, some technical consolidation may be necessary. Image Source: TradingView By Brian Nelson, CFA We added Lockheed Martin (LMT) to the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio all the way back in January 2020 before the COVID-19 meltdown. Shares had lagged the S&P 500 for some time after surfacing the portfolio idea, but certainly not during 2022. Lockheed Martin’s shares have surged more than 35% during 2022, beating the market by a huge margin. We continue to like shares, but we would expect some share-price consolidation during 2023 after the huge gains. When Lockheed Martin reported … Read more

GoodRx’s Modest Q4 Miss, Slowing Revenue Growth Expectations Send Shares Tumbling

Image: Many speculative areas have faced tremendous pressure in recent months from new issues to entities tied to the trend of disruptive innovation. Image Source: TradingView. By Valuentum Analysts The past year or so hasn’t been kind to companies tied to the theme of disruptive innovation. New issues such as Snowflake (SNOW), Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (ZM), and Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) have also had a rough go at it of late. For example, the Renaissance IPO ETF (IPO) has fallen almost 20% since late September 2020, while the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) has fallen almost 30%. GoodRx Holdings, Inc. (GDRX) is one of those companies that hasn’t performed as well. We first wrote up GoodRx Holdings, Inc. in December … Read more

Some Questions Answered: The Fair Value Estimate Range and ROIC

Q: In the 16-page stock reports, why doesn’t the ‘percentage undervalued / overvalued’ match up to the actual discount/premium to Valuentum’s fair value estimate of the company? A: We view the intrinsic value of a company as a Fair Value Range, not necessarily a single point estimate, so the undervalued and overvalued calculations match up to either the low fair value estimate or high fair value estimate, respectively. Within the context of a margin of safety, we wouldn’t necessarily view a company to be worth precisely $55 per share, for example; instead we’d view the company as worth between $50 (low end fair value estimate) and $60 per share (high end fair value estimate), with the low and high fair … Read more

Adobe Signals Near Term Growth Rate Slowing Down, Longer Term Outlook Still Quite Bright

Image Source: Adobe Inc – December 2021 Financial Analysts Meeting IR Presentation By Callum Turcan On December 16, Adobe Inc (ADBE) reported fourth quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended December 3, 2021) that modestly beat consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. However, shares of ADBE plummeted in the wake of its latest earnings report as management signaled that the firm’s near term growth rate would slow down in fiscal 2022 versus levels seen in fiscal 2021. Investors were apparently hoping for more, though in our view, Adobe’s longer term growth outlook is still quite bright. Our fair value estimate sits at $576 per share of Adobe. Earnings Update The company’s GAAP revenues were up 20% year-over-year last fiscal quarter, reaching … Read more

Dividend Growth Idea Lockheed Martin Has Ample Space Upside

Image Source: Lockheed Martin Corporation – Second Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan  The commercial and military opportunities in the realm of space have been growing at a brisk pace of late, and in our view, the growth runway in this area is immense. Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT) is a giant defense contractor with a sizable space business that caters to national defense, governmental, and commercial needs. We include Lockheed Martin as an idea in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio, and shares of LMT yield ~3.1% as of this writing. The company has four core business operating segments and ‘Space’ is one of those segments, which generates a sizable amount of its annual sales as you … Read more
