What Causes Fair Value Estimates to Change?

Image: A screenshot of the discounted cash-flow model learning tool for individual investors. By Brian Nelson, CFA If you’ve been a member of Valuentum for a while, you’ll notice that when we update a stock report, our estimate of a company’s fair value and the firm’s Valuentum Buying Index ratings can change. This is completely normal and should be expected (over time, companies generate cash and stock prices change). But sometimes the changes can be confusing, particularly if they are material (i.e. 10%, 20%, or more). In this article, let’s talk about why changes are standard operating procedure for investment research publishers. First, some background. Our estimate of a company’s fair value is driven by myriad factors. To derive a … Read more

Exact Sciences: Fast-Growing Molecular Diagnostic Company But Huge Risks

Image Source: Exact Sciences By Brian Nelson, CFA On January 9, diagnostic testing firm Exact Sciences (EXAS) issued promising preliminary guidance for its fourth quarter of 2022. The company expects fourth-quarter 2022 revenue, excluding COVID-19 testing, to advance 28% in the quarter on a year-over-year basis (considerably higher than the consensus forecast at the time), with screening revenue jumping 45% and precision oncology revenue advancing modestly, after excluding its divestiture of Oncotype DX Genomic Prostate Score test (completed in August 2022) and foreign exchange impacts. The company’s screening revenue consists of sales of its innovative Cologuard tests, which we’ll talk more about in this note, and its recently-acquired genetic testing firm PreventionGenetics, while its precision oncology division generates revenue from its … Read more

Microsoft, Alphabet Calendar 3Q Reports As Expected; Pressured By Weakening Economy

Image Source: Abi Begum By Brian Nelson, CFA We’re playing the long game in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, and we still like large cap growth and big cap tech as a way to generate significant capital appreciation over the long haul. 2022 hasn’t been the best year for these areas, but as with any drawdown in some of the strongest free-cash-flow generating, net-cash-rich, secular-growth powerhouses, we believe that they once again will reach new highs — it may take a bit longer than previously expected, however. On October 25, 2022, two of our favorite companies, Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) reported calendar third-quarter results. We had been expecting weakness in the PC market as well as in … Read more

ICYMI: Things Have Changed Fast; Inflation and the Fed Have Damaged the Economy

This article was originally published October 5.   Image Source: EpicTop10.com By Brian Nelson, CFA The year 2022 started out with the popping of the bubble in the alternative investments arena–namely in the cryptocurrency (BITO), non-fungible token (NFT), and the collectibles markets–coupled with worries about the Fed raising interest rates to combat inflation and weakness in the most speculative equity areas, namely disruptive innovation stocks (ARKK). It’s important to note that the consumer price index (CPI) started to edge meaningfully higher in early 2021 (not this year). Though the writing was on the wall with respect to impending Fed tightening, as investors, we have to assess what the Fed will do and the impact on the markets, not necessarily what … Read more

Things Are Bad Out There

“I don’t like this market one bit, but we have to endure. Markets will rise again, but there will be a lot more pain to come in the near term. We think the base case is that we get a very bad recession in 2023. We’ve yet to pull the trigger on put option ideas in the simulated newsletter portfolios, but we expect things to get worse before they get better. For readers seeking ongoing option ideas each month, please consider subscribing to our options commentary here.” – Brian Nelson, CFA By Brian Nelson, CFA Things are bad out there, and there’s probably no better way to say it. On September 28, Bloomberg reported that Apple Inc. (AAPL) is now … Read more

We’re Still Bullish; GDP Continues To March Ever Higher!

By Brian Nelson, CFA We believe there will be continued strength in the equity markets during the back half of this year and into 2023. There are myriad headwinds to this bullish underlying thesis, but big-cap company fundamentals remain strong, and we think this will become evident during first-quarter 2022 earnings season, which is already upon us. — We think the market is paying attention to all of the wrong things. Certainly, interest rates are important and Fed rate hikes could dampen growth, but the reality is that interest rates are still at all-time lows, and we doubt that the Fed will do anything to impact the wealth effect it fought so hard to preserve during the depths of the COVID-19 … Read more

GoodRx’s Modest Q4 Miss, Slowing Revenue Growth Expectations Send Shares Tumbling

Image: Many speculative areas have faced tremendous pressure in recent months from new issues to entities tied to the trend of disruptive innovation. Image Source: TradingView. By Valuentum Analysts The past year or so hasn’t been kind to companies tied to the theme of disruptive innovation. New issues such as Snowflake (SNOW), Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (ZM), and Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) have also had a rough go at it of late. For example, the Renaissance IPO ETF (IPO) has fallen almost 20% since late September 2020, while the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) has fallen almost 30%. GoodRx Holdings, Inc. (GDRX) is one of those companies that hasn’t performed as well. We first wrote up GoodRx Holdings, Inc. in December … Read more

Valuentum Weekly: Outsized Energy Exposure Continues to Buoy Newsletter Portfolios

Image: Light crude oil futures once traded for roughly -$40 (negative $40) during the COVID-19 crisis, but have now rocketed to more than $120 in recent trading. Image Source: TradingView. This note was emailed to members Sunday, March 6, 2022. Markets   The S&P 500, as measured by the SPY, is down 9% year-to-date, a modest pullback, in our view, particularly in light of the fantastic performance the past few years. Though not necessarily welcome, a down year every now and then for the broader market indexes and a modest bear market can only be expected, at times. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, as measured by the DIA, is down more than 7% year-to-date (not too bad), while the Nasdaq–as measured by the … Read more
