Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. Best Idea Booking Holdings Soars!

Image: Booking Holdings’ free cash flow conversion is about as good as it gets. The company remains a key idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Image Source: Booking Holdings By Brian Nelson, CFA We initiated a position in Booking Holdings (BKNG) in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio in June due in part to its extremely attractive valuation at that time, of which we highlighted graphically in this April 19 note. Booking Holdings’ price-to-fair value disconnect was rather large back in April following a huge fair value estimate increase around that time. Shares of the company have now surged past our fair value estimate of $3,164, as indicated in post-market trading following its fantastic second-quarter 2023 results, and we’re sticking … Read more

Walmart Warns: “Prices Are Still High and There Is Considerable Pressure on the Consumer”

Image Source: Mike Mozart By Brian Nelson, CFA As we wrote in “The Fed ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” in early January, the trade-down trends that we’re seeing in big box retail and with groceries, more generally, are interesting. Inflation started to accelerate with food-at-home prices moving aggressively higher in early 2022, and consumers have been trading down to better value. It probably wasn’t until egg prices soared, however — driven in part by a shortage of egg laying chickens (not just inflationary pressures) – that tipped everyday consumers to budget more cautiously, and the largest big box retailer in Walmart (WMT) is seeing this impact first-hand. Here’s what’s happening on the ground, per Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon on the … Read more

We appreciate your membership very much!   ——————————————— About Our Name But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] “attractive”? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: “value” and “growth,”…We view that as fuzzy thinking…Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term “value investing” is redundant.                          — Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992 At Valuentum, we take Buffett’s thoughts one step further. We think the best opportunities arise from an understanding of … Read more

By Brian Nelson, CFA Rental platform Airbnb (ABNB) has been a part of the latest series of IPOs that have soared out of the gates recently. Shares went public at $68 per share December 10, and now the equity is trading at more than $148 per share at the time of this writing. Thirteen years have now … Read more

Marriott International Can Survive COVID-19

Image Shown: Shares of Marriott International Inc have recovered somewhat from their March 2020 lows and are currently trading in the lower bound of our fair value estimate range. By Callum Turcan On August 10, Marriott International Inc (MAR) reported second quarter 2020 earnings that missed both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Marriott International’s financials have been devasted by the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, though its saving grace has been its asset-light business model which is built around property management and franchise fees. Most of its revenue comes from managing third-party locations and franchising out its various hotel brands to third-parties including Courtyard, Fairfield by Marriott, Residence Inn, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Westin, and others. Please note many of its franchised … Read more

ICYMI: Survey Coming Later Today, More Market Volatility Expected Image: The market’s levels of volatility so far in 2020 have been among the greatest in history. Expectations for increased volatility in the marketplace as a result of the proliferation of price-agnostic trading (indexing and quantitative trading) is a key theme of Valuentum’s text, Value Trap: Theory of Universal Valuation. We continue to emphasize the importance of due diligence, enterprise valuation, behavioral thinking, the information contained in prices, and stock selection across equity portfolios.
