Walmart Raises Its Fiscal 2025 Outlook

Image Source: Walmart By Brian Nelson, CFA On August 15, Walmart (WMT) reported better than expected second quarter results with both revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share coming in higher than the consensus forecast. Consolidated revenue advanced 4.8% in the quarter led by Walmart U.S. comp sales up 4.2% and Sam’s Club comp sales up 5.2%, both measures excluding fuel. The company’s consolidated gross margin expanded 43 basis points thanks to strength in Walmart U.S. and Walmart International. Walmart’s adjusted operating income increased 7.2% in the quarter “due to higher gross margins and growth in membership income.” Global ecommerce and global advertising advanced 21% and 26%, respectively, in the period. Adjusted earnings per share increased 9.8%, to $0.67 per share, … Read more

Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. Theft Becoming a Huge Problem for Retailers

Image Source: Ben Schuman Theft has always been a problem for retailers, but it has never been as big of a problem as it has been in recent quarters. Emboldened by the lack of police response and employees sometimes getting fired for confronting shoplifters, retail organized crime is on the rise. We’re not talking theft in the millions, or billions, but likely in the tens of billions per year or more across the U.S. Some attribute the rise of organized retail crime to the pandemic, which paved the way for shoplifters to post their loot online in order to make a quick buck. Some retailers are especially feeling the pinch, and recent commentary reveals just how bad retail theft (shrink) … Read more

Walmart Is Back on Track; Markets Looking Healthier

Image: Walmart’s operating income performance, while still under pressure, improved considerably during the third quarter. Image Source: Walmart By Brian Nelson, CFA Walmart Inc. (WMT) was the canary in the coal mine earlier this year when the company reported its first-quarter 2022 results in May that showed spending on food staples and energy (gas) was cutting into discretionary general merchandise (hardline) spending. However, market sentiment seems to be improving these days, and the firm’s third-quarter results released November 15 showed the huge big box retailer is getting back on track. Though we’re not going to be adding Walmart to any newsletter portfolio, we like what we saw in the quarterly report. During the third quarter, Walmart’s total sales growth advanced … Read more

Nike’s Gross Margin Falls, Inventory Leaps in Fourth Quarter Fiscal 2022

Image Source: Valuentum By Valuentum Analysts Very few other companies, if any other, have built such deep, personal connections with the consumer as Nike, Inc. (NKE) has, let alone the tremendous brand strength, and its endorsement deal with LeBron James gives it yet another top-notch globally marketable superstar. Nike’s annual free cash flows averaged ~$4.0 billion from fiscal 2019-2021, versus its ~$1.6 billion in dividend obligations in fiscal 2021, and it had a solid net cash position on the books at the end of fiscal 2022. The sustained strength seen at its digital and direct-to-consumer operations supports Nike’s outlook. Nike’s Dividend Cushion ratio is impressive; however, its ~1.1% dividend yield is relatively modest. From its namesake to Jordan Brand to … Read more

Quants and High-Frequency Trading the Real Cause of the GameStop Frenzy?

Image: The cause of the GameStop trading frenzy remains largely unclassified as it appears to us that quant and high-frequency trading played a much bigger role in the market disruption than what is being reported. By Brian Nelson, CFA Third-quarter 2021 earnings season has been thrust upon a marketplace that has been preoccupied with talk over supply chain disruptions, increasing inflation expectations, unfortunate distractions from trading activity by key officials at the Fed, and Chinese regulatory unease. We think these items had largely been the key reasons for the pullback in the markets in recent weeks. However, with news that President Biden seems to continue to support Jerome Powell as Fed Chief (we’ll know for sure in February) and … Read more

Recent Data Indicates US Consumer Spending Holding Up Well, Online Sales Surging

Image Shown: As of this writing, the S&P 500 (SPY) appears ready to end 2020 on a high note, supported by the resilience of the US consumer. By Callum Turcan The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic accelerated the shift towards e-commerce, and that change has long legs. Retailers that previously invested in their digital operations and omni-channel sales capabilities were able to capitalize on this shift while those that relied heavily on foot traffic were hurt badly. Numerous retailers went under in 2020 including J.C. Penney Company Inc (JCPNQ) and Neiman Marcus. Holiday season shopping data indicates that US consumer spending was frontloaded and grew modestly in 2020, aided by surging e-commerce sales, which advanced nearly 50% on a year-over-year basis. … Read more
