Video: Quants! You’re NOT Measuring VALUE and Nelson’s Theory of Universal Value

President of Investment Research Brian Nelson defines the concept of universal value and shows how quantitative statistical methods are inextricably linked to those of fundamental, financial, business-model related analysis. Value does not exist in respective process vacuums! Value is universal. Find out why. Running time: ~10 minutes.  Tickerized for Valuentum’s stock and ETF coverage universe. Transcript Hi this is Brian Nelson from Valuentum Securities, and this is the tenth edition of a series that I call “Off the Cuff,” where I get in front of the camera and I talk for ten minutes. This is what we have to talk about today. We have to talk about this concept: The Theory of Universal Value. Value does not exist in vacuums … Read more

Strategy Versus Tactics in the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio

Image Source: Anna & Michal We made a few tactical tweaks to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio during 2017. Let’s walk through them, and how we’re out to win the war, not win every battle. By Brian Nelson, CFA I’m not going to reference The Art of War written by Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu some time in the 5th century, nor am I going to use any quotes from the military treatise (I think it’s too well-traveled of a topic), but I do believe the approach to portfolio management is much like that of a general on a path to win the war. Now, don’t get me confused: I’m not saying that portfolio management is actually like being in … Read more

Stocks in the News: Kinder Morgan, Union Pacific, Colgate-Palmolive

Let’s cover the quarterly reports from a few industry bellwethers. By Brian Nelson, CFA Kinder Morgan (KMI) Plans for Dividend Hikes Kinder Morgan appears to be back on track, something that it set the stage for in early 2016 when Barron’s wrote about Valuentum’s take, “Is Kinder Morgan on the Road to Recovery (January 2016).” The pipeline operator continues to trade near our fair value estimate of $20, so it’s hard to make the case that there is a tremendous valuation opportunity in shares, though its prospects for a return to dividend growth have improved. On July 19, Kinder Morgan announced that it expects to raise its dividend by 60% in 2018 and advance the payout at a 25% yearly … Read more

Valuentum’s 3 Breakthroughs in the Field of Finance and More

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this. Tough Times for Rails

Key Takeaways: The North American railroad industry is oligopolistic in nature, and we love the barriers to entry and pricing strength that come with it. North American railroad operators have been hit by volume declines across a wide range of end markets. Currency movements and global economic concerns aren’t helping matters. Union Pacific remains our choice for exposure to the space. Though others present interesting opportunities as well, we think the firm’s operating ratio has the most upside from current levels in addition to it having some attractive market positioning. “…we’re not thrilled by the performance of Union Pacific since it was added to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, but the railroad industry offers such a strong fundamental backdrop that … Read more

Fundamental Strength To Outweigh Short-Term Volatility

Image Source: texasfeel Union Pacific Battling Declining Volumes We continue to be fans of Union Pacific (UNP) on a fundamental level, and we fully expect the company to be gearing up for material improvement further down the line as the end-markets it serves stabilize. Union Pacific reported weak quarterly results April 21, as operating revenue fell 14% from the year-ago period. The sharp drop was driven by an 8% decline in volume, as measured by total revenue carloads. Coal volume dropped 34%, industrial products volume decreased 10%, and agricultural and intermodal volumes fell in the low to mid-single digit range. Flat chemicals volume and automotive volume growth of 7% were no match for offsetting the other declines, and average revenue … Read more

Part I: Nelson’s Evaluation of Berkshire’s 2015 Annual Report

Image Source: Fortune Live Media By Brian Nelson, CFA It’s always fun to crack open the Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) annual report, this year’s 2015. It reminds me of how much times have changed. For one, if Warren Buffett had been starting out in the investment business today, he simply wouldn’t have had a chance. The front page of this year’s Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letter shows that he trailed the market 33% of the time in the first 6 years in business (1965-1970), and the company lost half of its market value in 1974. Very few fund managers today, if any at all, that lose half of their market value in one year, trailing the market by 22 percentage points … Read more
