The Difference Between Speculation and Investment

Brian Nelson, President of Investment Research at Valuentum, discusses the difference between speculation and investment.  Brian Nelson, CFA: This is Brian Nelson from Valuentum Securities. I’d like to talk about the concept of speculation. I think it is best taught with a story perhaps, one of my personal experiences. I used to work on the buy side and one of the more interesting stocks that I pitched in my experience was a company called Synaptics (SYNA). This must have been in 2004-2005 — almost 20 years ago now. Synaptics made an interface for a number of electronic devices, and what it held was some of the technological building blocks for a click-wheel technology. About a year or two later following that … Read more

Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. What to Do During This Market Selloff

By Brian Nelson, CFA In short, nothing. The U.S. stock market (SPY) was chugging along nicely until what was interpreted as a very favorable Consumer Price Index (CPI) print on July 11 that sent a rotation out of large cap growth and big cap tech into the beaten down areas of smaller cap stocks, prompting a broader market sell-off. The reasoning goes that, with inflation largely under control, smaller companies will benefit more from future rate cuts via reduced interest expense relative to larger companies. Though this is true, to varying degrees, the magnitude of the rotation was somewhat surprising, as rate cuts should benefit large cap growth (SCHG) and big cap tech (XLK), too, but we’ve seen this rotation … Read more

Tesla’s Second Quarter Report Wasn’t Great

Image: Tesla’s trailing twelve-month performance across vehicle deliveries, operating and free cash flow, as well as adjusted EBITDA have faced pressure in recent quarters. By Brian Nelson, CFA On July 23, Tesla (TSLA) reported mixed second quarter results with revenue outpacing the consensus forecast, but non-GAAP earnings per share coming up short. Total automotive revenue fell 7% on a year-over-year basis, while growth in ‘energy generation and storage revenue’ and ‘services and other revenue’ helped to drive total revenue modestly higher on a year-over-year basis. In addition to a decline in vehicle deliveries, reduced average selling prices across its auto line-up hurt performance. During the quarter, Tesla’s gross profit margin contracted 23 basis points, while swelling operating expenses drove income … Read more

Tesla’s Deliveries Bounce Back in Second Quarter

Source: Tesla By Brian Nelson, CFA On July 2, Tesla (TSLA) released its production and delivery numbers for the second quarter of 2024. Production of Model 3/Y and other models totaled 410,831, while total deliveries came in at 443,956 units, consisting of 422,405 Model 3/Y and the balance coming from other models. The results were better than expected and helped to propel shares of the electric-vehicle maker higher. Tesla’s equity has shot up past the high end of our fair value estimate range, and while we liked the better-than-feared news regarding its deliveries, we continue to be on the sidelines with respect to Tesla’s shares. The next big catalysts for Tesla’s shares are its earnings release on July 23 and … Read more

Lackluster Electric Vehicle Adoption Rates Impacting Tesla

Image Source: Tesla By Brian Nelson, CFA On April 23, Tesla (TSLA) reported lower-than-expected first-quarter 2024 results as reduced vehicle prices weighed on performance. Total automotive revenues fell 13% on a year-over-year basis, while total revenues, in aggregate, fell 9%. Its total gross profit fell 18%, while income from operations dropped by more than half. The first quarter was negatively impacted by the Red Sea conflict and an arson attack at Gigafactory Berlin. Management summed up the quarter with the following: Global EV sales continue to be under pressure as many carmakers prioritize hybrids over EVs. While positive for our regulatory credits business, we prefer the industry to continue pushing EV adoption, which is in-line with our mission. To support … Read more

We Remain Bullish; Is This 1995 – The Beginning of a Huge Stock Market Run?

Image: Large cap growth stocks have trounced the performance of the S&P 500, REITs, and bonds since the beginning of 2023. We expect continued outperformance in this area of the market. By Brian Nelson, CFA We’re now roughly four years past the depths of the COVID-19 meltdown, where equities collapsed in February and March of 2020. As the markets began to recover through 2020, our long-term conviction in equities only grew stronger. We think the biggest risk for long-term investors remains staying out of the market on the basis of what could be considered stretched valuation multiples. As we outlined heavily in the book Value Trap, valuation multiples hardly tell the complete story about a company and often omit key … Read more

Earnings Roundup: TSLA, NEE, IBM, CMCSA, NOW

By Brian Nelson, CFA Tesla (TSLA) Misses Fourth-Quarter Expectations as Continued Uncertainty Looms Image: The Model Y was the best-selling vehicle globally in 2023. Image Source: Tesla Tesla missed fourth-quarter expectations on January 24, and the market continues to shy away from the electric-vehicle maker surrounding continued controversy over CEO Elon Musk’s request to have greater voting control over the company. We think Tesla may be past its prime heyday years, and while the firm hauled in a nice chunk of free cash flow during 2023 ($4.4 billion) as it retains a net cash position ($29.1 billion), the company will likely never find its way into the newsletter portfolios, which house our favorite ideas for consideration. In the quarter, Tesla’s … Read more

12 Reasons to Stay Aggressive in 2024

By Brian Nelson, CFA 1. The Fed has signaled that rate cuts could start with inflation at a 2 handle (2 point something) and not at exactly 2.0%. That means that the Fed may become anticipatory to prevent overshooting to the downside with inflation. We see this as positive for long-duration equities, particularly those whose free cash flow generation is robust in the out-years, inclusive of big cap tech and the stylistic area of large cap growth. 2. Unemployment is at structural lows of 3.7%. Employers are working hard to keep talent on board, and with each paycheck, employees are pumping more and more money into the stock market via retirement accounts. This tailwind remains a stiff one and will … Read more
