Avoid Dividend Double Whammies By Using the Dividend Cushion!

By Brian Nelson, CFA I think a lot of investors sell themselves short. Of course you want a strong and growing dividend, but analysis shouldn’t stop there. One of the most important things you could ever do is evaluate just how strong that dividend truly is via the Dividend Cushion ratio, a metric that measures a company’s dividend coverage via future free cash flow generation with consideration of its balance sheet health. For example, how valuable would it have been to know that Kinder Morgan (KMI), ConocoPhillips (COP), and BHP Billiton (BHP) were going to cut their dividends…in advance of them doing so? Our membership knew these cuts were probable long before anyone else because they paid attention to each … Read more

More Market Weakness: We Haven’t Hit Bottom Yet

Global equity markets are falling yet again February 11, in part due to cautious comments from US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen about the health of the global economy and the legality/efficaciousness of negative interest rates, “Dividend Growth ‘Bubble’ To Continue But For How Long? (Feb 2016).” Market onlookers continue to fear that the Fed has nothing left to give, “out of ammunition,” with the tank of accommodative policy empty, and it might just be. To us, however, the news flow is more of the same. The world continues to be awash in crude oil (USO), and many are now starting to think that what was once mostly an oversupply problem is now being compounded by a demand problem as … Read more

Dividend Growth ‘Bubble’ To Continue But For How Long?

You’ve heard about low interest rates. You may have even heard about a ZIRP, zero interest-rate policy, as had been the case in the US for years, but have you heard of NIRP, negative interest-rate policy? Well, that’s the latest with respect to Japan (EWJ), which is home to the third-largest national economy in the world after the US and China. On January 29, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) introduced a negative benchmark interest rate of -0.1%, meaning that instead of paying interest on deposits, it will charge commercial banks to hold their money. This may make Japanese exports cheaper to stimulate growth, but my goodness, talk about a move to push “parked” assets out of the country. The US … Read more

Breaking: Markets in Free Fall

By Brian Nelson, CFA I was up late last night watching the 10-year Treasury fall below 2%, crude oil drop below $28 (and now below $27) per barrel, and the Dow futures collapse more than 500 points. Asset correlations are going to 1 — so much for modern portfolio theory, right? The benefits of diversification are sometimes absent at the very time you need them the most. If market observers didn’t learn this during the Great Depression, certainly they must have learned it during the Financial Crisis of 2008-2009. That’s why we like cash so much at times. We have a 35%+ cash weighting in both newsletter portfolios. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) is now down ~400 points (-2.5%), … Read more

MLPs: Circular Flow of Unsubstantiated Support Evaporating

Pictured: The circular flow of unsubstantiated support that continues to unravel, previously supporting the prices of the MLP universe. Image published June 18, 2015. © Valuentum Securities. The image above was taken from Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson’s article published on valuentum.com/ June 18.  Forward-looking, cash-flow based dividend analysis has proven its worth once again. Shipping giant Teekay LNG Partners (TGP) made a tidal wave in its stock recently, knocking income investors over, after it cut its distribution by 80% December 17 in order to fund capital requirements on its future growth projects, reduce debt, and eliminate its need to access equity capital markets in the near term. The Valuentum thesis on MLPs continues to suggest that distributions related to the business model continue to be fueled … Read more

Valuentum Economic Castleâ„¢ Rating Update

Read: Keeping the Horse Before the Cart: Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ Rating The Economic Castle Focuses on the Magnitude of Economic Value Creation The Valuentum Economic Castle™ rating is an enhancement of the competitive advantage framework (commonly known as economic moat analysis) that has become widespread and ubiquitous within the investing world. Whereas an economic moat framework evaluates a firm on the basis of the sustainability and durability of its competitive advantages, Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ rating evaluates a firm on the basis of the firm’s future economic profit spread (return on invested capital less its weighted average cost of capital). The companies with the strongest Valuentum Economic Castle™ ratings are poised to generate the most economic value for shareholders in the … Read more

2,350-2,750 on the S&P? Could the Coronavirus Catalyze a Financial Crisis?

Image: We think a rather modest sell-off in the market to the target range of 2,350-2,750 on the S&P 500 is rather reasonable in the wake of one of the biggest economic shocks since the Global Financial Crisis. The chart above shows how far markets have advanced since 2011, and an adjustment lower to the target range of 2,350-2,750 is rather modest in such a context and would only bring markets to late 2018 levels (note red box as the target range). The range reflects ~16x S&P 500 12-month forward earnings estimates, as of February 14, adjusted down 10% due to COVID-19. When companies like Visa talk about a couple percentage points taken off of growth rates, one knows that … Read more
