It’s easy to forget how much we’ve been through the past two years. Often, we forget how helpful the warning that markets were going to crash was the weekend before they did on February 22, 2020, “Is a Stock Market Crash Coming? – Coronavirus Update and P/E Ratios,” how we thought dollar-cost-averaging made sense at the bottom in March 2020, and how we went “all-in” in April … Read more

Starbucks Expects to Recover in Fiscal 2021

By Callum Turcan On January 26, Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) reported first quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended December 27, 2020) that saw the firm miss consensus top-line estimates but beat consensus bottom-line estimates. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has weighed negatively on Starbucks’ performance of late, as its GAAP revenues fell by 5% and its GAAP operating income tanked by 25% on a year-over-year basis last fiscal quarter. Leaning on its digital presence and drive-through operations have helped to a degree, but the reduction in the number of workers commuting worldwide (especially in the US) is clearly taking a toll on its business, as is the decline in vacation and business travel. Shares of SBUX yield ~1.8% as of … Read more

Chipotle, Domino’s Continue to Deliver for Shareholders

Image Shown: Domino’s Pizza Inc aims to grow its market share in the US by leaning heavily on its delivery and digital operations, a realm the firm has significant competitive advantages in, as compared to leaning on carryout operations at physical stores. Image Source: Domino’s Pizza Inc – January 2021 IR Presentation By Callum Turcan In the restaurant industry, one thing the coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has made clear is that having drive thru operations, a strong online presence and efficient delivery services will be key to meeting consumer demand going forward. Physical restaurant locations that rely on indoor dinning will become relevant once again when the pandemic is contained, something the ongoing distribution of COVID-19 vaccines should help accomplish, but … Read more

Starbucks’ Long-Term Outlook Is Improving

Image Shown: Starbucks Corporation sees the total addressable market for coffee products growing by a decent clip over the coming years, which is forecasted to reach ~$450 billion in 2023. Image Source: Starbucks Corporation – 2020 Biennial Investor Day Presentation By Callum Turcan On December 9, Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) hosted its biennial Investor Day meeting, held virtually this year due to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic and updated its financial guidance for the next several fiscal years. For reference, Starbucks’ GAAP revenues and GAAP operating income fell 11% and 62% year-over-year, respectively, in fiscal 2020 (period ended September 27, 2020) as the company contended with headwinds created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking ahead, Starbucks expects to realize a “significant rebound” … Read more

McDonald’s: Holding Up Well During the Pandemic

By Brian Nelson, CFA Nothing seems to be able to stop McDonald’s. Remember the documentary Super Size Me (2004)? For those that may not have seen the award-winning film, director Morgan Spurlock filmed his experiences eating only McDonald’s food three times a day for a 30-day consecutive period. He made a point to eat every item on the menu, and if memory serves us well, anytime he was asked to “Super Size” his meal, he had to oblige. The documentary measured the effects of eating only McDonald’s food on his health in just this short period of time. During his McDonald’s-binge, Spurlock consumed an average of 5,000 calories a day, roughly twice that of a healthy diet, and he ended … Read more
