Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. Chinese Stocks Getting Hammered

Image shown: A confluence of factors are driving Chinese stocks lower, not the least of which is heightened regulatory concerns. By Brian Nelson, CFA The collapse in Chinese equities (FXI) (MCHI) during the trading session July 26 is a reminder (again) why you should consider combining momentum with *enterprise valuation* in stocks, as in the Valuentum process. It’s not enough for you to think a stock is undervalued or cheap. The market must agree with you, too. A falling stock price says the market disagrees. Our favorite ideas for consideration are always in the newsletter portfolios, whether the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio, or High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio. Excerpt from ‘Value Trap’ 2nd Edition: MPT Sounds a Lot Like “Empty”

The second edition of President of Investment Research Brian Nelson’s book ‘Value Trap’ will be released in the coming weeks. Here is a short excerpt to whet your appetite: — … — Enterprise valuation, or the discounted cash-flow framework, remains at the center of finance, in my view, and the core of what we do at Valuentum. The process and its key cash-based components helped deliver a suite of outperforming equity considerations at a time when modern portfolio theory (MPT) and diversification benefits were breaking down. Both stocks and bonds, for example, dropped aggressively in unison during the COVID-19 crisis, and the popular U.S. 60-40 stock/bond portfolio “suffered one of its worst performances since the 1960s” during the first quarter … Read more

Our Reports on Stocks in the Independent Oil & Gas Industry

Images Source: Anadarko Structure of the Independent Oil & Gas Industry The oil and gas business is highly competitive in the exploration, acquisition, and production of reserves. Changes in deepwater drilling laws and other regulatory initiatives can add uncertainty to operations. The trajectory of global economic growth, the actions of OPEC, and political and environmental uncertainty are other key factors. A strong balance sheet to manage through the commodity price cycle is necessary for survival. With the group’s profitability largely driven by the volatile prices of oil, natural-gas and NGLs, we’re generally not that excited about the structure of this commodity-producing space. However, the world’s growing need for energy offers tremendous opportunities for constituents. We’ve reallocated our resources to optimize … Read more

Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

Update: US and Iran Now De-escalating Tensions

By Callum Turcan On January 7, Iran retaliated against the US for the killing of Iranian major general Qasem Soleimani (leader of a group that the US has deemed a terror threat under the Trump administration) less than a week earlier by firing missiles from Iranian soil at bases in Iraq that contain US, Iraqi, and coalition troops. The Iranian government aggressively publicized the attack by providing Iranian media outlets with footage of missiles leaving Iran that were targeted towards Iraq. Fortunately, no US, Iraqi, or coalition casualties were reported. We are very thankful that nobody was hurt as a result of the Iranian missile strike. Middle East Tensions on the Rise

By Callum Turcan Early Friday (Arabian Standard Time) on January 3 (the strike was carried out late Thursday evening Eastern Standard Time), under the orders of President Trump, the US took out major general Qasem Soleimani who was the leader of Iran’s Quds military group within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (‘IRGC’). Please note the US designated the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in April 2019, and that the justification for the strike was due to there being an immediate threat to US lives (namely soldiers and contractors stationed in the Middle East), according to the Pentagon. It’s important to note that the strike occurred on Iraqi soil. The Quds force is known to be Iran’s extraterritorial military outfit, … Read more

ConocoPhillips Pushes Through a Big Dividend Increase, Emerging” Play Is a Dud”

Image Shown: Shares of ConocoPhillips traded modestly higher on October 7 after announcing a significant dividend increase and plans for additional share buybacks in 2020. However, please note ConocoPhillips is still trading far below where it was at the start of 2019 as an abundance of supplies combined with deteriorating macroeconomic conditions to weigh negatively on expected future raw energy resource pricing. By Callum Turcan On October 7, shares of upstream super-independent ConocoPhillips (COP) traded up modestly after the company announced that it was boosting its quarterly dividend by 38% sequentially and would repurchase $3.0 billion worth of its shares in 2020. Management noted that the upsized dividend would cost an additional $0.5 billion on an annualized basis. Shares of … Read more

Economic Commentary: Apple $225+, Brokers Tumble, Auto Sales Look Tired

“Though all signs point to increased volatility, we maintain our view that we’re well-positioned in the newsletter portfolios, and the ideas highlighted in the Exclusive publication consider the backdrop economic conditions we closely monitor.” — Brian Nelson, CFA There has been plenty of news in the markets this week, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) experiencing significant declines only to bounce back a bit. From where we stand, the markets look vulnerable technically, but that doesn’t mean we’re looking to change anything in the newsletter portfolios. We have some dry powder in the form of a ~10% cash weighting in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio. The disappointing September ADP jobs report added to lower-than-expected ISM (Institute … Read more
