Systemic Risk in These Frothy Times

Let’s talk about index investing, market valuations, and mention how a few ideas in the Best Ideas Newsletter are doing. By Brian Nelson, CFA For most investors during most parts of the economic cycle, index investing (VOO), or holding a broad basket of stocks that approximate the returns of a large market index may make a lot of sense. I have always said this from the very beginning: Individual stock selection is not for everyone. What may not be well-known, however, is that index funds have experienced multi-year periods of both outperformance and underperformance relative to actively-managed funds since the dawning of the very first index fund many decades ago. I’m worried that some investors today may not have this … Read more

I CARE

Image Shown: The S&P 500 from early 2009 through today, June 15, 2017. By Brian Nelson, CFA There it is — the upward-sloping chart of the S&P 500 (SPY) since the March 2009 panic bottom. What a sight to see… The past 8 years have marked an incredible bull market in US equities and one for the record books in many instances. The drivers behind the multi-year rally have been many — ultra-low interest rates and their magnifying impact on equity valuations, strong earnings growth from the doldrums of the Financial Crisis, and the proliferation of passive and dividend-growth strategies de-emphasizing the price-versus-value equation. “Money,” it seems, is chasing stocks at any price, and most of the trading on exchanges … Read more

Alert: Adding Protection! Finally Acting on Netflix Idea

Image Source: Esther Vargas We’re adding protection to the newsletter portfolios and finally making a move on Netflix. By Brian Nelson, CFA Nothing should be alarming in this note. We’ve talked about our concerns about the broader stock market for some time now, and how we think we’re in a bubble. One has to look no further than the very intro to the May edition of the Best Ideas Newsletter here (pdf), released Monday, for example, or our continued reminder of how markets perform during periods of contractionary monetary policy. Of course we’re still content with riding the market higher–should it go in that direction, perhaps on the backs of incremental index investors and dividend growth re-investors–but we’re also being … Read more

Valuentum’s 3 Breakthroughs in the Field of Finance and More

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this. Netflix: Is NOW Finally the Time?

Netflix’s shares are soaring, and we are licking our proverbial chops on the opportunity to add puts to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. The bubble in Netflix’s shares continues to inflate—and that spells opportunity for bears, but at the right price at the right time. For now, we’re going to continue to watch shares run higher until we’re finally ready to take a stab at them. It’s been about a year since we highlighted our concerns about Netflix’s valuation, but our patience has paid off as we watched shares move ever-higher — timing is pretty much everything when it comes to betting on the decline of a stock price via put options, and we’re being careful. Options aren’t for everybody. … Read more

5 Shocking Stock Market Predictions for 2017

Image Source: Claudia Dea  Valuentum: 2017 Is the Year of Evangeline Adams By Brian Nelson, CFA “Entrepreneurs are never satisfied. They want to do things better. They strive for perfection and use all the ingenuity to their command to achieve it.” – J.W. Marriott My Inbox Was Overflowing with Kindness Your positive replies to my last email, “Words Cannot Express How I Feel” were simply incredible. My inbox was flooded with so many emails, so many kind words. There were so many that I’m still working through them. If you haven’t received a personal reply, plan on getting one. You’re very important to me. It’s quite possible that I may very well be the luckiest man to have such wonderful … Read more

AT&T Targeting Disruption in Transformational Merger

Key Takeaways AT&T has agreed to acquire Time Warner for $85.4 billion in cash and stock in a deal that is expected to close by the end of 2017. Strict regulatory scrutiny can be expected. The deal has the potential to disrupt the traditional pay-TV industry while setting AT&T apart from its competitors in the wireless telecom industry, where growth has become sparse for the firm. The telecom industry is maturing, and price-slashing competition has changed the game as network differentiation has largely become a thing of the past. We’re not fans of the debt that will come with the completion of the deal, but the prospects of what the combined entities could produce are certainly interesting. We view the … Read more

This Just In: Netflix’s Stock Is Volatile!

Key Takeaways Netflix unit subscriber growth is not accelerating, having flattened through the first nine months of 2016 (12 million net additions). The current market capitalization of Netflix implies the company must grow consolidated operating earnings by 8-fold to be considered fairly valued. The content cost thesis is a well-traveled one, but the market is missing the vast overhead expenses (marketing, G&A) related to Netflix’s business, which punish earnings and are excluded from segment profit calculations often used in buy side valuations. Netflix’s sources of upside: pricing leverage, contribution margin improvement, a potential buyout, and new ancillary business lines: advertising, licensing, consumer products, etc. We continue to believe shares of Netflix are vastly overpriced, with a beta-driven sell-off the catalyst … Read more

Retail Weakness: Blame the Election?

Image Source: DonkeyHotey By Kris Rosemann The 2016 election cycle has been one characterized by unprecedented amounts of criticism and accusations, of both the personal and political variety, and it may be true that the perceived political environment from the view of the general public has not been in such a state of uncertainty for some time. Let’s not get into the details of who called whom what in last night’s Presidential debate, but some parents were reportedly not allowing their children to watch the debate out of fear that their values or outlook on democracy could be skewed. But could the uncertainty surrounding the election actually be enough to impact consumer activity at retail outlets and restaurants? Some are … Read more
