Hanesbrands Leaps, IBM Falters and More

We were pleased to see the recent performance of Hanesbrands, and we continue to think IBM is not yet out of the woods, despite some life with respect to revenue trends. Let’s cover this and more. By Kris Rosemann There are a lot of things happening in the markets these days. For starters, growth in the world’s second-largest economy accelerated for the first time in seven years as China’s reported growth of 6.9% in 2017 was slightly higher than the 6.7% it achieved in 2016 and the projected growth rate for 2017 of ~6.5%. However, many observers are anticipating a return to the slowing trends of years past as the Chinese government works to reduce risky lending in areas such … Read more

2018 Starts Out with a Bang!

Even some the most bullish and optimistic investors have been surprised by the resiliency of today’s market environment. Why does it seem appropriate to remind members that the stock market doesn’t always go straight up with almost no volatility?

Strategy Versus Tactics in the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio

Image Source: Anna & Michal We made a few tactical tweaks to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio during 2017. Let’s walk through them, and how we’re out to win the war, not win every battle. By Brian Nelson, CFA I’m not going to reference The Art of War written by Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu some time in the 5th century, nor am I going to use any quotes from the military treatise (I think it’s too well-traveled of a topic), but I do believe the approach to portfolio management is much like that of a general on a path to win the war. Now, don’t get me confused: I’m not saying that portfolio management is actually like being in … Read more

Discovery-Scripps Joining Forces to Take on the Changing Digital Media Landscape

Image Source: Lwp Kommunikáció Discovery Communications has agreed to acquire Scripps Networks, but will it be enough for the two to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving–and consolidating–media landscape? By Kris Rosemann The cable TV industry is not what it was only a few short years ago, and Discovery Communications (DISCA) finally getting its hands on the assets of Scripps Networks (SNI) is only further evidence of this. Both companies have had a relative amount of success in delivering compelling programming to targeted audiences in years past via traditional pay-TV channels, but the days of tuning in to Shark Week on The Discovery Channel through your local cable provider are fading fast. The cord-cutting revolution is one that has been well-covered … Read more

Stocks in the News: Harley-Davidson, Johnson & Johnson, Netflix

Earnings season is picking up. Let’s evaluate a few quarterly reports from some bellwethers. By Brian Nelson, CFA Harley-Davidson (HOG) Not Revving Like It Used To We plan to update our report and fair value estimate of Harley-Davidson following its weak second-quarter report, released July 18. Both revenue and net income faced pressure on a year-over-year basis in the period, with earnings per share falling 4.5%. Management spoke of “challenging market conditions,” and the executive team is right about that: Harley-Davidson worldwide retail motorcycle sales fell 6.7% in the quarter, while Harley-Davidson retail motorcycle sales in the US were down more than 9%. The company’s US market share is holding up (~48.5%), but we are starting to worry about more … Read more
