Trump Targets China with Tariffs

Image: Shanghai, China (December 2016), Andrey Filippov Stock markets in the US are slowly building in the prospect of retaliation (a “trade war”) from China, as a result of President Trump’s new tariffs. We maintain our view that the stock market has been frothy for some time, and the recent volatility may just be the beginning of a reversion to normalized valuations, with or without concerns about global trade. By Brian Nelson, CFA The market may be using concerns about a “trade war” as a reason to sell overpriced stock. According to Factset, as of March 16, the forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio for the S&P 500 is still over 17 times, one turn more than the 5-year average and nearly … Read more

Recent Stock Drops; Dividend Cut Coming at Plains?

Image Shown: Plains All American’s stock price may be building in a distribution cut that may materialize in the near term. Several companies disappointed the Street as of late. Though the broader equity markets have been generally calm and steadily-advancing, some underlying constituents have been anything but. By Brian Nelson, CFA It’s been a bull market for some time, but that doesn’t mean all is calm within the ranks. Plains All American (PAA) disappointed investors August 8 after performance during its second quarter came in below expectations and the company lowered forward guidance. We’ve been cautious on the master limited partnership (MLP) space and critical of certain industry-specific metrics for some time, so the disappointment shouldn’t be surprising to our readership. … Read more

Brand Image Taking Center Stage in Aspirational Goods

By Kris Rosemann Coach (COH), Michael Kors (KORS), Fossil (FOSL), and Ralph Lauren (RL) all beat consensus estimates in the calendar second quarter of 2016, but the way the market reacted to the beats varied drastically despite none of the above firms necessarily issuing outright optimistic expectations. The weak outlooks have weighed on shares of Coach and Michael Kors, but shares of Fossil and Ralph Lauren have received an updraft in hopes of turnaround strategies and sales-decline stemming plans beginning to take hold.  Ongoing weakness in retail traffic across the US, and a decrease in tourism in major domestic cities have played an important role in the growing issues for luxury brands. In an attempt to combat traffic pressures, many … Read more

Fundamental Strength To Outweigh Short-Term Volatility

Image Source: texasfeel Union Pacific Battling Declining Volumes We continue to be fans of Union Pacific (UNP) on a fundamental level, and we fully expect the company to be gearing up for material improvement further down the line as the end-markets it serves stabilize. Union Pacific reported weak quarterly results April 21, as operating revenue fell 14% from the year-ago period. The sharp drop was driven by an 8% decline in volume, as measured by total revenue carloads. Coal volume dropped 34%, industrial products volume decreased 10%, and agricultural and intermodal volumes fell in the low to mid-single digit range. Flat chemicals volume and automotive volume growth of 7% were no match for offsetting the other declines, and average revenue … Read more

Merger Talk: Coach May Be In Play

With interest rates at lows, the equity markets at all-time highs, and executive teams looking for strategic and opportunistic growth opportunities, the table is set for some wheeling and dealing, in our view. We think Coach (COH), the aspirational maker of handbag and accessories, is on the radar of a number of suitors, the most likely being LVMH Moet Hennessy (LVMHF), according to Prime Retailer: LVMH groups representatives have recently shown interest in Coach, sources say. Recent shows and fashion line has appealed to the design team of LVMH, one of the persons admits. It could be the turnaround that attracts LVMH – turning its attention from classical high end luxury accessories label to full RTW apparel lineup. There are … Read more
