Waste Industry Collecting Cash

Pressures in the recycling business didn’t negate revenue growth across the municipal solid waste space during the first quarter of 2018, and the pace of operating-income and free-cash-flow expansion remains solid. Valuations could be more attractive, but dividends look strong, even though we’d like to see lower levels of financial leverage. By Brian Nelson, CFA Waste Management (WM) kicked off first-quarter earnings season for the big three garbage haulers in the municipal waste space April 20. Though recycling revenue faced pressure during the period, Waste Management’s first-quarter results had everything we’d be looking for. Core price advanced 4.9%, and traditional solid waste internal revenue growth from volume was 3%, helping to drive total reported revenue higher by 2.1%. The solid … Read more

When you read our research, we’re not just providing financial metrics — Valuentum is striving to provide an answer to the most important question in investing: what is a company worth? Though there are varying opinions about which underlying factor is the most important investment consideration, at the end of the day, the process of valuation collects every investment consideration to provide a conclusion. It is the answer after all other considerations, the final outcome of analysis. It is why we say that investors that don’t pay attention to valuation may be doomed to fail…eventually. Not seeking valuation is not seeking the answer.

Video: Quants! You’re NOT Measuring VALUE and Nelson’s Theory of Universal Value

Strategy Versus Tactics in the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio

Image Source: Anna & Michal We made a few tactical tweaks to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio during 2017. Let’s walk through them, and how we’re out to win the war, not win every battle. By Brian Nelson, CFA I’m not going to reference The Art of War written by Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu some time in the 5th century, nor am I going to use any quotes from the military treatise (I think it’s too well-traveled of a topic), but I do believe the approach to portfolio management is much like that of a general on a path to win the war. Now, don’t get me confused: I’m not saying that portfolio management is actually like being in … Read more

Business Models of Garbage Haulers “Hitting on All Cylinders”

Image Source: Waste Connections In a sign of the health of the US economy, garbage haulers are experiencing rates of top-line growth not witnessed in years, but their earnings multiples reflect share prices that may be disconnected from normalized fundamentals. No matter how much we love their business models, we’ve already “cashed in” our chips. By Brian Nelson, CFA Industry economics in the municipal solid waste industry are generally easy to understand. Industry pricing power essentially emanates from disposal operations. Waste generated, for example, must end up somewhere, and therefore whichever entity has the disposal operations has the power to set the bar with respect to pricing, directly or indirectly, from transfer facilities all the way through collections within certain … Read more

Valuentum’s 3 Breakthroughs in the Field of Finance and More

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this.
