Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson pauses for a picture before speaking at the CFA Society of Houston in March 2017. By Valuentum Editorial Staff Let’s cover Valuentum’s 3 major breakthroughs in the field of finance. The first one is big and may challenge you to rethink everything you think you know about investing. 1. On a logical framework, Valuentum has debunked John C. Bogle’s landmark syllogism that has paved the way for the concept of index investing. Index investing has been built on a logical shortcoming, whether supported by evidence or not. We think it is important that the investment community know of this. By Kris Rosemann Little has changed at Garmin (GRMN) as of late from an operational standpoint. The lion’s share of the pressures weighing on the company’s shares are external forces, in our opinion. The firm is executing soundly, and recent product launches were key drivers of improved results through the first half of 2016 and gave management the confidence to raise its top- and bottom-line guidance for full-year 2016. Free cash flow generation has rebounded nicely thus far in 2016 as well. Through the first six months of the year, the company reported free cash flow of more than $250 million, compared to free cash flow generation of -$55 million (negative $55 million) in the comparable period of 2015. By Kris Rosemann How far we have come from the financial abyss! The US economy is now more than seven years removed from the credit crisis that sent shockwaves through the global financial system in the latter years of the past decade. In the fourth quarter of 2008, for example, real GDP in the US tumbled more than 8%, a figure not witnessed since the double-dip recession of the 1980s, and perhaps not surpassed since the time of the Great Depression. During the Financial Crisis of 2008-2009, many industrial entities, particularly those with finance subsidiaries faced dwindling credit health, and several including General Electric (GE) and Harley-Davidson (HOG) cut their dividends to shareholders. Others such as General Motors (GM) even … Read more
By Brian Nelson, CFA Today’s stock market is a difficult one. That Apple (AAPL) is selling off after disappointing fiscal second-quarter results is unfortunately no surprise to us, “Apple Will Go Lower… And It Will Be ‘Forced’ Into Acquisitions (January 2016).” There may be “nowhere to run, nowhere to hide” for market participants seeking full exposure to equities. Unfortunately, it’s no consolation to the reader that missed our profit-taking alert in Apple a few months ago, and our discussion to take even more shares off the table “Looking To Trim Apple… (December 2015).” In August 2015, we removed one third of the position in Apple from the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio at $108.92 for a … Read more
Apple (AAPL) hosted a special event Monday, March 9, to show off its latest products and developments. The headliner of the event was the brand new Apple Watch, one of the most talked about gadgets in recent memory. Other topics for the recent addition to the Dow Jones Industrial Average index included iPhone momentum, growth in China, Apple TV updates, and the new MacBook development. Apple’s new MacBook Pro with Retina display looks to improve on the already solid foundation of Apple’s MacBook line. With several innovations, the lightest MacBook model has received solid reviews thus far. Despite the PC market being under pressure, Mac notebooks continue to experience growth. Another popular Apple product receiving an upgrade was Apple TV. … Read more
It is sometimes with hesitation that we talk about Apple (AAPL) because it is one of the most widely covered stocks. We often try to highlight hidden gems across our coverage universe, but when things are going well…well…things are going well. The iPhone maker has been one of the best performers in the Best Ideas portfolio and Dividend Growth portfolio, and the new products at the September 9 event speak to continued sustainability of strong fundamentals. View event replay here >> The biggest surprise at the event, in our view, was the release of both Apple’s first wearable device (called Apple Watch) and its first payments solution (called Pay). “The Apple Watch is available in two different sizes and comes … Read more
