The Role of Luck in Investing and How To Think About It

Dear members: — For every Amazon (AMZN) that made it, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, from the dot-com era that didn’t. Very few remember Pets.com or etoys.com, both of which went belly up during the dot-com meltdown. For every Tesla (TSLA), there is a DeLorean Motor Co. We might have completely forgotten about DeLorean were it not for the blockbuster movie, Back To The Future, that immortalized its futuristic sports car. — For every streaming enterprise like Netflix (NFLX), there is a Napster that failed. Most of us probably don’t even remember the original Napster, which encountered legal troubles before closing shop shortly after the dot-com bust. For every Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), there’s an AltaVista or Netscape. For every Apple (AAPL), there … Read more

Not Worried About Global PC Demand Weakness

Image Source: IDC By Brian Nelson, CFA On April 9, International Data Corporation (IDC) issued preliminary findings for the first quarter of 2023 for global personal computer (PC) shipments in its Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The results were a bit surprising, with the firm noting that “weak demand, excess inventory, and a worsening macroeconomic climate were all contributing factors for the precipitous drop in shipments of traditional PCs during the first quarter of 2023.” According to the IDC report, global PC shipments fell 29% to 56.9 million compared to the first quarter of 2022. Apple (AAPL) experienced the biggest year-over-year percentage decline, where shipments fell more than 40%. Dell Technologies (DELL), Lenovo (LNVGY) (LNVGF) and ASUS experienced declines … Read more

How to Navigate the Low Return Environment

Image Shown: Investors continue to gamble on meme stocks and cryptocurrencies. Image Source: QuoteInspector.com.  Modern Finance Is Dead, Long Live Value Trap By Brian Nelson, CFA At Valuentum, we don’t believe in many of the quantitative theories out there. We like to operate within the stock component of market returns, as this has historically been the strongest place to focus one’s efforts. We don’t think it makes sense to add “bad” assets to a portfolio just for the sake of diversification. Can you imagine adding pipeline MLPs to your portfolio in June 2015? If we can find great ideas within the stronger relatively performing stock market, we think we’ll be far better off than any stock/bond mix that one may choose. … Read more

ALERT: Bull Raids, Short Squeezes and Highly Unusual Market Activity

We are putting short investors on high alert! By Brian Nelson, CFA In late 2018, Valuentum published Value Trap, a book that warned to all that would heed its warning that a collapse in the traditional quant value factor was coming and that excessive volatility in the markets caused by price-agnostic trading–or those that aren’t paying attention to fair value estimate calculations–would only build and build to eventually reach extreme and irrational levels. The book, while hugely successful winning award after award, was largely ignored by the media, despite our best efforts to get the word out. Now, the chickens are coming home to roost. Our Thoughts on Intel’s Latest Earnings Report

Image Shown: An overview of Intel Corporation’s performance during the first nine months of fiscal 2020. Image Source: Intel Corporation – Third Quarter of Fiscal 2020 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan On October 22, Intel Corporation (INTC) reported third quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended September 26, 2020) that largely matched consensus expectations. Intel boosted its full-year outlook for fiscal 2020 on a net basis (which included an increase in its expected free cash flows this fiscal year) during its latest earnings update, though management reduced its forecast for Intel’s expected operating margins versus previous expectations. We continue to like Intel’s ability to generate sizable free cash flows, though we are concerned with its rising net debt load of … Read more
