Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. Booking Holdings’ Fourth Quarter Results Impacted By War in Middle East But Free Cash Flow Margins Remain Robust

By Brian Nelson, CFA  On February 22, Booking Holdings (BKNG) reported better-than-expected fourth quarter results that beat expectations on both the top and bottom lines, but the company noted that its business had been impacted by the conflict in the Middle East. Regardless, Booking Holdings remains one of our favorite ideas on the market today due to its fantastic free cash flow generation and secular growth prospects. Following in the footsteps of Meta Platforms this quarter, Booking Holdings also initiated its first-ever dividend, a quarterly cash dividend of $8.75 per share, and we like what this implies with respect to capital discipline. Our fair value estimate stands north of $4,100 per share, well above where shares are currently trading at … Read more

Best Idea Booking Holdings Soars!

Image: Booking Holdings’ free cash flow conversion is about as good as it gets. The company remains a key idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Image Source: Booking Holdings By Brian Nelson, CFA We initiated a position in Booking Holdings (BKNG) in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio in June due in part to its extremely attractive valuation at that time, of which we highlighted graphically in this April 19 note. Booking Holdings’ price-to-fair value disconnect was rather large back in April following a huge fair value estimate increase around that time. Shares of the company have now surged past our fair value estimate of $3,164, as indicated in post-market trading following its fantastic second-quarter 2023 results, and we’re sticking … Read more

We appreciate your membership very much!   ——————————————— About Our Name But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] “attractive”? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: “value” and “growth,”…We view that as fuzzy thinking…Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term “value investing” is redundant.                          — Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992 At Valuentum, we take Buffett’s thoughts one step further. We think the best opportunities arise from an understanding of … Read more

Visa’s Stock Remains Resilient, Huge Free Cash Flow Margins

Image Source: Visa By Brian Nelson, CFA Visa Inc. (V) is one of our top ideas in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. As a 10%-12% “weighting,” we have been very pleased to see its share price hold up during what is turning into one of the most difficult years for investors in a long time. Year-to-date in 2022, Visa’s shares are down less than 7%, as the ~6% pop during the trading session October 26 (at the time of this writing) has cushioned the blow. Our fair value estimate of Visa stands at $227 as shares yield ~0.93% on a forward annual estimated basis. We’re huge fans of Visa for three reasons. First, the company operates as a … Read more
