PepsiCo Earnings Update

Image Shown: PepsiCo Inc’s expansive snacks and beverage portfolio is home to 23 brands that generated $1+ billion in annual retail sales in 2019. We are big fans of PepsiCo’s business model but caution that the firm’s net debt load needs to be closely monitored going forward, especially given management’s generous approach to dividends and share repurchases. Image Source: PepsiCo Inc – CAGNY 2020 IR Presentation By Callum Turcan Dividend aristocrat PepsiCo Inc (PEP) reported third-quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended September 5, 2020) that beat both top- and bottom-line consensus estimates. PepsiCo’s organic revenue growth, a non-GAAP metric, stood out. During the fiscal third quarter and the first three quarters of fiscal 2020, PepsiCo’s organic revenue growth clocked in … Read more

The Resilience of the US Digital Advertising Market and Alphabet

Image Shown: Shares of Alphabet Inc Class C shares, a top-weighted holding in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, have performed very well over the past year. Going forward, we see room for significant capital appreciation upside as the digital advertising market has proven to be very resilient of late. By Callum Turcan To ride out the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, we continue to prefer large-cap tech companies with pristine balance sheets, strong cash flow profiles, and promising long-term growth outlooks. Ideally, we are searching for companies with outlooks that are supported by secular growth tailwinds, allowing for several winners in their respective end markets. Digital advertising is a prime example of a resilient high-quality market that is supported by secular … Read more

Nelson: I’m Not Worried About This Market

Dear members: — First of all, I wanted to share a heartfelt thank you to all that sent kind words regarding the passing of my brother. My inbox was overflowing with your love and kindness. Len was a great person and my best friend. Without him, I don’t think Valuentum would have come into existence. Your words have been very comforting to me and my family during this difficult time. Thank you again. — With that said, I continue to be bullish on the markets over the long haul. We maintain our view that longer-duration enterprise free cash flows are worth more than they were prior to the COVID-19 market collapse, and valuation adjustments are being reset higher as a … Read more

Third-Level Thinking and “Keynesian Convergence”

Image: The analytical process of the Valuentum Buying Index rating system.  By Brian Nelson, CFA In the 2011 book, The Most Important Thing, co-founder of asset management firm Oaktree Capital Management, Howard Marks, divided stock market analytics into two levels of thinking, first-level and second-level. Marks used a few examples to explain the difference between these two levels of thinking: First-level thinking says, “It’s a good company; let’s buy the stock.” Second level thinking says, “It’s a good company, but everyone thinks it’s a great company, and it’s not. So the stock’s overrated and overpriced; let’s sell.” First-level thinking says, “The outlook calls for low growth and rising inflation. Let’s dump our stocks.” Second-level thinking says, “The outlook stinks, but … Read more

3 Lessons in Portfolio Management Over 10 Years

Dear members: — We’re finally getting a pause in the rapid ascent of the markets on September 3rd. Though headlines may look scary and momentum/volatility investors could start to pile on to the downside, a modest retracement is actually a good thing. We continue to focus on the long haul with our processes, and we’re viewing the sell-off as profit taking, for the most part. — In the near term, the markets will also have to digest some speculators betting on mean reversion between “value” (cyclical) versus “growth” (secular), but we maintain the view that the value-versus-growth conversation is largely nonsense (see block quotes below), and mean reversion is something akin to the gamblers’ fallacy, in my humble opinion. Investors should also continue … Read more

Earnings Brief: PEP, CMG, WHR, TSLA, TWTR, KMB

Second-quarter earnings season is coming in largely as expected. Many of the firms are reporting improving demand through the course of the quarter, and entities that were facing hardship are making the necessary adjustments to improve performance. Pandemic-driven demand has been evident across the consumer staples space, and innovative entities have not stopped innovating as a result of COVID-19. We maintain our view that the world is fight back against COVID-19, and we expect fundamental performance to continue to improve across myriad sectors and a greater “return to normalcy in 2021,” which is but six months away. Accommodative Fed/Treasury policy coupled with substantial increases in money supply may keep this market moving ever-higher. This article was modified to correct the … Read more

July Dividend Growth Newsletter

“The COVID-19 pandemic has all but shown it’s not the economy, or next quarter’s earnings, or last year’s book-to-market ratio or last year’s P/E ratio that drives market prices and returns; it’s enterprise valuation. I’ve been working for years and years explaining how important enterprise valuation, or the discounted cash flow process, is to understanding stock market prices and returns, and how most valuation ratios such as the P/E ratio, for example, … Read more
