Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too

Please select the image below to download, “Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too:” Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks. We appreciate your membership very much!   ——————————————— About Our Name But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] “attractive”? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: “value” and “growth,”…We view that as fuzzy thinking…Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term “value investing” is redundant.                          — Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992 At Valuentum, we take Buffett’s thoughts one step further. Starbucks Expects to Recover in Fiscal 2021

By Callum Turcan On January 26, Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) reported first quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended December 27, 2020) that saw the firm miss consensus top-line estimates but beat consensus bottom-line estimates. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has weighed negatively on Starbucks’ performance of late, as its GAAP revenues fell by 5% and its GAAP operating income tanked by 25% on a year-over-year basis last fiscal quarter. Leaning on its digital presence and drive-through operations have helped to a degree, but the reduction in the number of workers commuting worldwide (especially in the US) is clearly taking a toll on its business, as is the decline in vacation and business travel. Shares of SBUX yield ~1.8% as of … Read more

For reference, Starbucks’ GAAP revenues and GAAP operating income fell 11% and 62% year-over-year, respectively, in fiscal 2020 (period ended September 27, 2020) as the company contended with headwinds created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking ahead, Starbucks expects to realize a “significant rebound” … Read more

McDonald’s: Holding Up Well During the Pandemic

By Brian Nelson, CFA Nothing seems to be able to stop McDonald’s. Remember the documentary Super Size Me (2004)? For those that may not have seen the award-winning film, director Morgan Spurlock filmed his experiences eating only McDonald’s food three times a day for a 30-day consecutive period. He made a point to eat every item on the menu, and if memory serves us well, anytime he was asked to “Super Size” his meal, he had to oblige. The documentary measured the effects of eating only McDonald’s food on his health in just this short period of time. During his McDonald’s-binge, Spurlock consumed an average of 5,000 calories a day, roughly twice that of a healthy diet, and he ended … Read more

News Brief: We Like Large Cap Growth, Big Cap Tech, and the NASDAQ

Image: Since 2010, a large cap growth ETF has outperformed the S&P 500 by nearly 150 percentage points (15,000 basis points). Since 2010, a large cap growth ETF has outperformed a small cap value ETF by over 275 percentage points, or 27,500 basis points (image not shown). We expect continued outperformance from companies within the large cap growth bucket. By Brian Nelson, CFA The markets have been see-sawing the past couple weeks as the global economy continues to recover and much of the world awaits the outcome of the 2020 US Presidential election. We think the equity markets have largely factored in the forecasted epidemiology curve with respect to COVID-19, including infection spikes across the world, so recent market volatility … Read more
