Batten Down the Hatches – Another US Market Crash Probable

A global financial contagion like that of the Financial Crisis just six short years ago cannot be ruled out. The magnitude of wealth lost in China’s (FXI) equity market is simply staggering, and we’re already witnessing bad loans soar across China’s Big 4 banks. We’re hearing that property, used as collateral for stock margin trading in China, is often being sold for 90 cents on the dollar as speculators look to cover losses. We expect the fallout from the collapse in Chinese equity markets to eventually reverberate through their property markets, impacting loan-to-values in the commercial and residential arenas, sparking significant loss rates and asset write-downs across the Chinese financial system. We continue to assess the tangible evidence of an … Read more

Long-time 9-Rated Broadcom Soars!

The Valuentum Buying Index is a system that is designed to generate new ideas. Firms that register a 9 or 10 on the ranking system are ones that our team digs into to decide whether they pass muster for inclusion into the newsletter portfolios. Not all 9’s and 10’s make the cut, but that doesn’t mean they are poor ideas. Once an idea registers a high rating and is added to the newsletter portfolios, it is held until it registers a low rating — thereby, capturing the pricing cycle from undervalued and “going up” to overvalued and “going down.”  The newsletter portfolios are performing great, and so are some of the recent highly-rated companies! Convergys (CVG) was a company that … Read more

The Market Top?

For those that are following along closely, you shouldn’t be surprised if the market corrects 5%-10% in the coming months. Let’s talk about this. From a technical standpoint, it may not be too far of stretch to say that we’re likely going to test the bottom of the S&P 500 (SPY) uptrend, and that could feasibly mean a drop to the 200-day moving average (blue line above). My technical alerts are telling me that with respect to the S&P 500, we’ve just dipped below the 50-day moving average, an arbitrary simple rolling average but one that is no less self-fulfilling than value investing itself. Don’t panic though. We’ve cut through the 50-day moving average many a time before during this … Read more

Intel, A Disciplined Capital Allocator?

Image Source: Gareth Halfacree We fully applaud Intel’s (INTC) management for walking away from the deal with Altera (ALTR). Though we liked the transaction from a strategic standpoint, our view centered on the assumption that Intel could “pay up to ~$40 per share for the company…and still create value for existing shareholders.” With Altera’s shares trading north of $43 at present, Intel would have had to pay a sharp premium to market levels, perhaps in the $60s, to entice management. Bloomberg reported that Intel had offered as much as $54 per share, and in this light, we’re glad the company walked away. Even though we think the bid was too high, our opinion of the executive suite has been … Read more

Valuentum Economic Castleâ„¢ Rating Update

Read: Keeping the Horse Before the Cart: Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ Rating The Economic Castle Focuses on the Magnitude of Economic Value Creation The Valuentum Economic Castle™ rating is an enhancement of the competitive advantage framework (commonly known as economic moat analysis) that has become widespread and ubiquitous within the investing world. Whereas an economic moat framework evaluates a firm on the basis of the sustainability and durability of its competitive advantages, Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ rating evaluates a firm on the basis of the firm’s future economic profit spread (return on invested capital less its weighted average cost of capital). The companies with the strongest Valuentum Economic Castle™ ratings are poised to generate the most economic value for shareholders in the … Read more

Earnings from 8 Interesting Ideas

By Brian Nelson, CFA “’I believe you have to be willing to be misunderstood if you’re going to innovate.’ You can’t outperform the market if you are the market. Similarly, you must adopt a non-consensus view and be right about that view to beat competitors.” CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos with ‘Source: 25iq’ commentary Many members have expressed to me that they just can’t believe investors select stocks in a different way than the Valuentum style (absent dividend growth investors, which have carved out a unique niche in their own right). Some of our new members think the Valuentum process is the principal and dominant framework for investing – or how the majority of investors look at things. This view … Read more

Focus on a Rules-Based Process Not on Short-term Outcomes

By Brian Nelson, CFA …you should be skeptical of what investment advice you use and who your sources are. (Investment gurus) give…seemingly solid advice in (their) columns, but (as) it turns out (their) stock picking skills don’t translate so well into the mutual fund industry… …Part of the problem is that you have no idea what they’re actual track record is or the conviction they hold on each recommendation they put out there. The talking heads have no idea what your risk profile and time horizon are. There’s a huge disconnect between financial predictions you read about or see on TV and your personal circumstances. That’s why it’s so important to focus on a rules-based process instead of short-term outcomes. It … Read more
