Visa’s Q1 Fiscal 2023 Solid, Puts Up 64%+ Operating Margin

Image: Visa is a free cash flow generating powerhouse and is insulated from rising delinquency and charge offs, unlike others in the credit card space. Image Source: Visa By Brian Nelson, CFA On January 26, Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Visa (V) reported excellent first-quarter fiscal 2023 results. Net revenues advanced 12% in the quarter, and Visa leveraged that top-line expansion into 17% growth in non-GAAP net income. The company’s operating margin for the period came in at an impressive 64.1%, a decline from last year’s quarter but still a sight to see. Non-GAAP earnings per share leapt 21%, to $2.18, which came in better than the consensus estimate. Shares of Visa have jumped more than 11% so far in … Read more

Goldman Sachs Drops, Morgan Stanley Pops in Bull Market for Advice””

Image: Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management division has provided the company with stability, while Goldman Sachs continues to feel weakness across several of its business segments. Image Source: TradingView By Brian Nelson, CFA Banking entities have kicked off fourth-quarter 2022 earnings season. The quarterly results across those that have reported have been mixed thus far, among the largest entities, but perhaps the dichotomy among players was no more pronounced than the market’s reaction to Goldman Sachs’ (GS) and Morgan Stanley’s (MS) respective fourth-quarter 2022 results. Goldman Sachs’ shares fell to the lower end of our fair value estimate range, while Morgan Stanley’s shares surged toward our fair value estimate. We think Morgan Stanley’s shares could run to the high end of … Read more

Market Whipsaw: Crypto Collapse and a Lower-than-Expected Inflation Print

Image: Uncertainty in the cryptocurrency markets has surged with concerns over the liquidity of a key exchange. Investors are weighing the spillover effects of crypto with the view that the pace of inflation may have peaked. — By Brian Nelson, CFA — The U.S. equity market continues to be highly volatile as it whipsaws between concerns over the health and sustainability of cryptocurrency and optimism over lower-than-feared inflation readings. We maintain our bearish/defensive stance on equities, but at the same time, we continue to be “fully-invested” across the simulated newsletter portfolios in part because we don’t want to miss out on days like today, November 10, when the markets are soaring ~2.5%-5.5% depending on which index you are monitoring. Berkshire Continues to Be a Staple in the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio

Image Source: Fortune Live Media Warren Buffett has made some missteps over the years. For every Occidental Petroleum, there is a Kraft Heinz that hasn’t worked out. For every Apple, there is an IBM that has failed to live up to expectations. We hope our readers view our work in a holistic way, much like they view Buffett’s. By Brian Nelson, CFA On November 5, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) (BRK.B), the conglomerate run by Warren Buffett and company, reported third-quarter results. Berkshire’s quarterly reports are always rather muddy, as GAAP presentation requires the company to report unrealized gains/losses on its stock investments as investment gains/losses in net earnings (losses). Such accounting doesn’t tell the whole story as most of Berkshire’s equity … Read more

Banks Held Up in 3Q 2022 But Mortgage Market Dynamics and Consumer Health Are Big Economic Concerns

Image: Homebuyer mortgage payments on new homes have increased more than 50% since last year due to rising interest rates. We think this is a precursor to lower housing prices, which could have implications across the banking and financials sector. Image Source: Redfin By Brian Nelson, CFA We’ve never been huge fans of taking on outsized banking and financials exposure in the simulated newsletter portfolios for a number of reasons. First, the banking industry, much like the insurance industry, is generally muted exposure to the broader economic environment. Though having some exposure to banking and financials may make sense, long-term investors are going to get a better bang for their buck with general operating entities that aren’t necessarily tied to … Read more
