The Best Ideas for 2014 and Beyond: Part I

The Valuentum Buying Index, our stock selection methodology, identifies firms that are 1) undervalued on a discounted cash-flow basis (e.g. three-stage fully-populated valuation model with complete financial statements), 2) undervalued on a relative value basis versus peers and the firm’s closest competitors, where applicable, and 3) just starting to show interest by investors as measured by technical/momentum indicators, providing the mechanism to drive a firm’s price to its fair value. Without the latter component, investors have a heightened risk of holding an underpriced stock for an extended period of time, one that may turn out to have little prospects for eventual price-to-fair-value convergence. Once a firm is added to the Best Ideas portfolio or Dividend Growth portfolio, generally with a Valuentum … Read more

Have Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Shares Finally Found Support?

Image Source: kennijima By Alexander J. Poulos and Brian Nelson, CFA The pharmaceutical industry remains an area of innovation with numerous life-altering therapies brought forth to treat the many afflictions that plague us. The industry lifeblood remains the tenuous path of research and study. There is not a foolproof way to predict how a compound will respond until full clinical trials are completed and analyzed, and even successful commercialization cannot be guaranteed should a drug be approved, regardless of the time and costs invested. A later stage clinical failure, for example, could devastate a smaller company, with its equity never to recover. That’s in part why we tend to prefer larger, more diversified, entities within the pharma/biotech arena as the … Read more

Image Source: Pfizer Inc – First Quarter 2020 Earnings IR Presentation Key Takeaways The race for a COVID-19 cure and vaccine is rapidly evolving with a lot of exciting press releases being put forth. Gilead has taken the lead with a viable treatment, Sorrento is working toward a cure, and it seems most all of big pharma and biotech is racing to find a vaccine, from Johnson & Johnson to Sanofi/GSK and beyond. Though the evaluation of the full data set from a Phase 2 clinical trial means a lot more than the evaluation of a limited set of data from a Phase … Read more

Which Sectors Are Leading the Market Higher? And Why Is This Important?

Missed the ’13 Most Important Steps to Understand the Stock Market’? Click here. Demand academic evidence regarding the efficacy of the Valuentum process? Click here. Tobias J. Moskowitz and Mark Grinblatt documented the “strong and prevalent momentum effect in industry components of stock returns which accounts for much of the individual stock momentum anomaly” in their scholarly article published in the Journal of Finance, ‘Do Industries Explain Momentum’ (download here; stable link here; updated by Fraulo and Nguyen here). Moskowitz and Grinblatt also concluded that “industry momentum investment strategies, which buy stocks from past winning industries and sell stocks from past losing industries, appear highly profitable.” Such findings are consistent with the ‘Case for the Valuentum Style of Investing,’ and … Read more

CVS Health at the Crossroads, Too Much Debt

We have been disappointed with the lack progress displayed by CVS Health thus far in 2017. We knew the business was entering into an earnings trough as a result of key contract losses, but recent events have unfolded that, in our view, have lessened the attractiveness of its business model, to a meaningful degree. Let’s talk more about what’s happening at CVS Health, the changing PBM market, Amazon’s threat, and too much leverage. We’re not overreacting, but we’re not happy either. By Alexander J. Poulos “CVS Health hasn’t performed as we would have hoped during 2017, and frankly, it has been hit by a storm of negativity, not the least of which has been caused by the disruptive threat of … Read more

We wrote up the calendar fourth-quarter results of the top two weightings in the XLV ETF, United Health (UNH) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) here and here, … Read more

2,350-2,750 on the S&P? Could the Coronavirus Catalyze a Financial Crisis?

Image: We think a rather modest sell-off in the market to the target range of 2,350-2,750 on the S&P 500 is rather reasonable in the wake of one of the biggest economic shocks since the Global Financial Crisis. The chart above shows how far markets have advanced since 2011, and an adjustment lower to the target range of 2,350-2,750 is rather modest in such a context and would only bring markets to late 2018 levels (note red box as the target range). The range reflects ~16x S&P 500 12-month forward earnings estimates, as of February 14, adjusted down 10% due to COVID-19. When companies like Visa talk about a couple percentage points taken off of growth rates, one knows that … Read more

US Congress Is Getting Ready to Pass a Massive ~$2.2 Trillion Fiscal Stimulus Bill

Image Shown: US equities have started to recover some of their lost ground as the likelihood that the US Congress will pass a massive ~$2.2 trillion fiscal stimulus and emergency spending package, dubbed the CARES Act, has increased significantly over the past week as seen through the bounce in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY). President Trump has clearly indicated that he intends to sign such a bill into law as soon as possible, with the US House of Representatives expected to take up the legislation this upcoming Friday morning on March 27. By Callum Turcan On March 25, the US Senate worked late into the night to secure a bipartisan compromise on a massive ~$2.2 trillion fiscal stimulus … Read more
