In the News: Amazon, GE, Kraft-Heinz, Disney, CVS Health, Gilead

We’re reiterating the large range of fair value outcomes for Amazon. We’re staying far away from General Electric and Kraft-Heinz. Netflix may have its back against the ropes with Disney Plus. CVS Health and Gilead were two setbacks in the newsletter portfolios in the past, but we kept losses to a minimum and new ideas more than offset the weakness. The Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio continues to do very well. By Brian Nelson, CFA Amazon (AMZN) Image Shown: Amazon has a large range of fair value outcomes, and shares are trading roughly in line with our fair value estimate. The e-commerce powerhouse’s shares have come in aggressively since it reported second-quarter results July 25. We get a lot of questions … Read more

In the News: Second-Quarter Earnings Season Begins

Second-quarter earnings season is upon us. The markets aren’t expecting much growth. Core industrial names may not fare well, but thus far, big pharma is solid. We’re not making any changes to the newsletter portfolios. By Brian Nelson, CFA We’re off to the races with second-quarter earnings season. The markets aren’t expecting much, with the consensus for S&P 500 (SPY) companies to experience a 3% earnings decline, according to FactSet. If this happens, this would mark the first time S&P 500 companies, in aggregate, would have posted year-over-year declines since the first half of 2016. The markets have rallied considerably since then, and despite the strong earnings expansion aided in part by corporate tax cuts, the 12-month forward P/E ratio … Read more

New Highs! The December Call Has Been Well-Rewarded

Image shown: Valuentum’s Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio. Since inception, the newsletter portfolio has *never* had a constituent that experienced a dividend cut. We moved to weighting ranges beginning in 2018.   “The less the prudence with which others conduct their affairs, the greater the prudence with which we must conduct our own.” – Warren Buffett (2018) By Brian Nelson, CFA While others are celebrating, we know better. This market could come down upon itself like nothing else. But for now. We breathe a sigh of relief. A company, Valuentum, that emphasizes the importance of timing and then delivers on that cold December 26 day to move to all-in in the newsletter portfolios is something remarkable (see image below). We cannot go back to … Read more

Apple Surging — Your Competition Is News-Driven and Failing

No change to simulated newsletter portfolios. Clarification: On March 15, we sent out an alert for the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio removing Novartis (NVS) and adding to the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), the latter now in the 5.5%-7.5% weighting bands, a combination of its prior weighting and the new additional weighting. By Kris Rosemann and Brian Nelson, CFA Whether it’s the 24-7 business news channel or the up-to-the-millisecond charting functionality that is causing it, your competition is news-driven. For example, we often receive a lot of questions on stocks at the time when they are falling precipitously. This is not the time to do the homework. It could simply be because the investor is holding the stock and wants an update, … Read more

Outperformance No Matter How You Measure It

Image shown: The performance of Valuentum’s simulated Best Ideas Newsletter since the inaugural edition of the newsletter, July 13, 2011. We migrated to a weighting range format for the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio ideas beginning in 2018. At that time, Visa (V) was the top weighting by far at 8.6%. Shares of Visa have soared since, and other ideas haven’t been too shabby either! Source. Valuentum’s Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio is in a class by itself. Did you know that ~90% of active fund managers are underperforming their benchmarks over prolonged periods of time? The lack of volatility of the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio had been driven by its massive average cash “weighting” of 25% during its history, something we … Read more

It Definitely Is a *Best* Ideas Newsletter!

Image shown: Valuentum migrated to a weighting range format for the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio ideas beginning in 2018. This article was sent to members via email March 15. By Brian Nelson, CFA I was on social media the other day, and somebody was asking whether there would be more engagement/likes/appreciation from a picture of a cat than if someone were to put up great stock picks year after year. I think the poll came back in favor of the cat pictures! It’s an interesting time, and investors are tuning out great research because they simply don’t know what to listen to. They don’t know the real deal, and that’s why writing Value Trap: Theory of Universal Valuation was so important. It’s … Read more

DG Newsletter Alert, Markets on a Roll! New Highs Coming?

Image shown: We notified members December 26 that we had moved the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio to a “fully invested” position, from a 30% and 20% cash “weighting” at the high end of the range, respectively. It doesn’t look like the timing could have been much better.  Changes to Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio Removing Novartis (NVS) -3.5%-5.5% Adding Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) +3.5%-5.5% By Brian Nelson, CFA The back half of 2018 was among the most exciting in Valuentum’s history. For one, we might have made one of our best “market-direction” calls since inception in practically calling the near-term bottom December 26. In hindsight, it’s clear the market had overreacted, but at the time, going to “fully … Read more

Changes to the Newsletter Portfolios (Best Ideas & Dividend Growth)

Image shown: In our December 26 note to members, we moved the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter and simulated Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio to “fully invested” from a cash “allocation” of 30% and 20%, respectively at the high end of the range. It has worked out wonderfully as we keep our finger on the put option trigger in case price-agnostic trading and heightened volatility rears its ugly ahead again, as it did in December 2018. Summary of Changes to Newsletter Portfolios Best Ideas Newsletter: Remove Gilead Sciences (GILD) Add Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) at 2.5%-4% weighting Dividend Growth Newsletter: Remove Xilinx (XLNX) Remove Gilead Sciences Add Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF at 2.5%-3.5% weighting Add Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) at 2.5%-3.5% weighting By Kris … Read more

Market Mayhem — Alerts for Members

During these extremely volatile times, it’s important to stay focused. On December 15, we informed all of our members to “Pay Attention.” Shortly thereafter, we notified members of the potential for a stock market technical breakdown. This morning, we offered a pre-market briefing about the importance of thinking about portfolio protection.
