Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

ICYMI: Interview with Valuentum’s Callum Turcan

Callum Turcan helps head up Valuentum’s research product and is co-editor of the company’s newsletters. We sat down with Callum to get his thoughts on new developments in the market and economy. Let’s kick things off with his thoughts on Brexit. Callum Turcan: Looks like the Brexit debate is coming to a close with a large Tory majority coming into the UK Parliament (EWU) after the December 12 general election, a large enough majority to provide Prime Minister Boris Johnson with more than enough room to maneuver the likely political obstacles ahead (over the next couple of months). By early 2020, it seems the UK will no longer be a member of the EU given that the incoming Parliament, in … Read more

Economic Commentary: Marks, Dalio, and the Discount Rate

Image Source: Mike Cohen We sat down with the Valuentum team to discuss their latest thoughts on recent economic developments. To kick off the conversation, let’s start with the team’s views on the latest memo from Oaktree’s Howard Marks: Mysterious. For those that don’t know Howard, he is the Director and Co-Chairman of Oaktree, which managed about $122 billion in AUM, as of September 2019. The memo goes into depth on the reasons for negative interest rates, the impact of negative interest rates, and opines on whether the US will ever see negative interest rates. Then, we’ll go from there! Brian Nelson: The concept of negative interest rates is not merely academic, but they have far-reaching implications across the global … Read more

Economic Commentary – Politics, the WeWork Debacle, and How We Use the Valuentum Buying Index in the Newsletter Portfolios

In our latest Economic Commentary, the Valuentum team continues its discussion on politics and the markets and the implications of a potential WeWork failure on the commercial real estate and construction markets. We’ll also address a very important question: Why are there lower Valuentum Buying Index ratings in the newsletter portfolios at times? The answer is rather straightforward and a good thing! Let’s get started. Christopher Araos: One comment about the upcoming elections.  The previous one proved to the world how susceptible the general populace of America is to propaganda from abroad–when they could organize rallies for locals to go to and from countries like Ukraine and Russia (RSX). My concern is this literally opens up a can of worms/pandora’s box. … Read more

Economic Commentary: US-Listed Chinese Names, 60-40 Stock-Bond Allocation and More

There’s an interesting saying that I came across recently…that hits at the most important component of any fiduciary approach: capital preservation. The saying was “Friends don’t let friends buy and hold.” We’ve always employed the Valuentum strategy, which we believe is much more promising than a traditional buy and hold strategy. – Brian Nelson, CFA The US-China trade war continues with reports indicating that the White House is considering delisting Chinese (FXI, MCHI, KWEB) companies on US exchanges. Let’s get more of the Valuentum’s team’s thoughts on these developments as well as other topics that have come to the fore. The latest alert to members is a great prompt to get the conversation started. The Valuentum Team: If we had … Read more

Join the Conversation on the Market Plunge

The Valuentum team shares its thoughts on the recent surge in volatility and collapse in interest rates amid a trade and currency war between two of the largest economies in the world, the US and China. No changes to the newsletter portfolios at this time. During the past few days, the US (SPY, DIA) and China (FXI, MCHI) have escalated a trade war, turning it into a currency war, the latter allowing its yuan to drop to lower levels against the U.S. dollar. The US has now labeled China a “currency manipulator,” and China has responded by suspending U.S. agricultural purchases. China is one of the largest buyers of U.S. agricultural goods. The Valuentum team builds on its previous conversation … Read more

Latest Channel Checks at Malls…Scary

We know malls come and go, and location is everything, but our latest visit to a few malls in the Chicagoland area leave us scratching our heads in a big way. One was eerily empty. By Brian Nelson, CFA A small sample set is never one to extrapolate, but our latest checks of malls in the northwest Chicagoland area came up a little surprising. We’re not sounding the alarm bells just yet, but we think some caution is in order for the largest mall REITs, including Tanger Factory (SKT), Macerich (MAC), Simon Property (SPG) and Taubman (TCO). Something just wasn’t quite right on our latest visit, and we attribute it primarily to failing anchor department stores, namely Carson Pirie Scott … Read more
