Performance Update: The Valuentum Buying Index

Note: A more recent analysis of the Valuentum Buying Index rating system can be accessed at the following link: /Value_and_Momentum_Within_Stocks_Too A version of this article was published October 26, 2013. By Brian Nelson, CFA We periodically update the performance results of the Valuentum Buying Index (VBI), the stock-selection methodology that drives idea-generation within the Best Ideas portfolio. The academic studies of the Valuentum Buying Index can be accessed here (white paper) and here (AAII). The latest iteration of the performance, dated September 3, 2014, continues to showcase the strong sorting mechanism embedded within the investing framework, particularly when the index is coupled with qualitative oversight and portfolio management skill. Sorting winners from losers is what the Valuentum Buying Index has been designed to … Read more

Quick Tip: Keep Things in Perspective

Best Ideas portfolio holdings Visa (V) and Precision Castparts (PCP) recently reported relatively disappointing calendar second-quarter results (here and here). Share prices of both portfolio constituents sold off a few percentage points following their respective earnings releases. Though growing more concerned when share prices drop is natural (and perhaps rightly so in some cases), one of the most effective approaches to staving off behavioral and psychological pitfalls (e.g. selling at the bottom, truncating gains, etc.) is to keep things in perspective. In situations where a company’s stock has doubled or tripled, for example, a 5%-10% pullback should be viewed as “normal” trading activity, resulting from the concept of ‘profit-taking,’ or when some shareholders take some of their profits off the table … Read more

Valuentum Economic Castleâ„¢ Rating Update

Read: Keeping the Horse Before the Cart: Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ Rating The Economic Castle Focuses on the Magnitude of Economic Value Creation The Valuentum Economic Castle™ rating is an enhancement of the competitive advantage framework (commonly known as economic moat analysis) that has become widespread and ubiquitous within the investing world. Whereas an economic moat framework evaluates a firm on the basis of the sustainability and durability of its competitive advantages, Valuentum’s Economic Castle™ rating evaluates a firm on the basis of the firm’s future economic profit spread (return on invested capital less its weighted average cost of capital). The companies with the strongest Valuentum Economic Castle™ ratings are poised to generate the most economic value for shareholders in the … Read more

Assessing Materiality of 5 Relatively Poor Incremental Data Points from eBay

eBay (EBAY) has one of the strongest business models on the market today. The firm uniquely benefits from a network effect in its auction business and a secular trend toward consumer online consumption in its payments business, PayPal. Recent same-store sales performance has also been solid, albeit slowing, in recent periods. According to ChannelAdvisor same-store sales growth at eBay came in at 11.5% in May, down from 14% in April. eBay retains a vibrant Economic Castle. Before we start walking through the five relatively poor incremental data points from eBay, we need to make a couple things clear. First, we hold eBay in the portfolio of our Best Ideas Newsletter, and we do not expect to make any changes to … Read more

Earnings from 8 Interesting Ideas

By Brian Nelson, CFA “’I believe you have to be willing to be misunderstood if you’re going to innovate.’ You can’t outperform the market if you are the market. Similarly, you must adopt a non-consensus view and be right about that view to beat competitors.” CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos with ‘Source: 25iq’ commentary Many members have expressed to me that they just can’t believe investors select stocks in a different way than the Valuentum style (absent dividend growth investors, which have carved out a unique niche in their own right). Some of our new members think the Valuentum process is the principal and dominant framework for investing – or how the majority of investors look at things. This view … Read more

Only One Bank Fails Fed’s Stress Test

The banking industry is based almost entirely on the confidence of intermediaries and counterparties that make up the building blocks of the financial system. An investment in a bank or money center must come with the acknowledgement of the distinct possibility that another financial crisis may occur at an unknown time in the future. Though we don’t expect one anytime soon, it’s worth noting that there have been three significant banking crises during the past three decades alone: the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s/early 1990s; the fall of Long-Term Capital Management and the Russian/Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s; and the Great Recession of the last decade that not only toppled Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Washington Mutual, … Read more

E-commerce Remains in Secular Expansion

Thursday brought a plethora of news from the e-commerce space. First, Bloomberg reported that Amazon (AMZN) is raising prices on Prime from $79 per year to $99 per year. The company was quick to note that the Prime Fresh membership fee will remain unchanged at $299, as it continues to test pricing thresholds in the marketplace. We don’t expect much customer defection as a result of the price hike—and especially nothing like that which happened to Netflix (NFLX), which lost hundreds of thousands of customers when it raised prices in 2011. Amazon’s price increase at Prime was necessary, in our view, as it faces rising content (movies) and shipping costs. With more than 20 million US Prime members, the pricing … Read more

Thank you…

By Brian Nelson, CFA Earlier this week, I received an email from a colleague and valued member of our services. I wanted to share it here for others to read. I haven’t included his name, but if he wants me to, I can add it in. It is filled with wisdom, experience and kindness. And it really made my year to read his words. The Valuentum community, I believe, is the best community of investors out there. Sir, if you do happen to read your own email on our site, we very much have appreciated your feedback, and we hope to continue to live up to your praises. We are dedicated, and our team has been rejuvenated by your words. … Read more

Visa Boasts One of the Best Business Models on the Market Today

Global payments technology company Visa (V) showed us why we continue to like the company when it reported fiscal first-quarter results Thursday. The firm is not a bank and does not issue cards or extend credit or set rates/fees for account holders of Visa-branded cards, but it does operate one of the most advanced processing networks, and we can think of few other business models that generate a stronger competitive advantage. Visa takes on no credit risk–unlike American Express (AXP) and Discover Financial (DFS)–but remains an integral part of the secular trend toward a cashless society and online consumption, where most transactions are not made with cash. Visa is the largest retail electronic payments network in the world based on … Read more
