Is a Stock Market Crash Coming? — Coronavirus Update and P/E Ratios

Image Source: World Health Organization, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Situation Report — 32 We don’t think this is the environment to put new capital to work, and we remain highly cautious of what COVID-19 means for global economic growth not just in the first quarter of 2020 but for the rest of this year (maybe longer). Right now, the US markets are not really factoring in anything related to COVID-19, and perhaps may be adjusting to China’s stimulus in artificially propping up the markets as if the outbreak is somehow a “positive thing.” With the S&P 500 trading at 19.0 forward earnings estimates–estimates that are likely too high given the evidence we are seeing with respect to a slowdown due … Read more

Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

ICYMI: Interview with Valuentum’s Callum Turcan

Callum Turcan helps head up Valuentum’s research product and is co-editor of the company’s newsletters. We sat down with Callum to get his thoughts on new developments in the market and economy. Let’s kick things off with his thoughts on Brexit. Callum Turcan: Looks like the Brexit debate is coming to a close with a large Tory majority coming into the UK Parliament (EWU) after the December 12 general election, a large enough majority to provide Prime Minister Boris Johnson with more than enough room to maneuver the likely political obstacles ahead (over the next couple of months). By early 2020, it seems the UK will no longer be a member of the EU given that the incoming Parliament, in … Read more

Macy’s Cuts Guidance, Dividend Cut Could Be on the Horizon

Image Source: Macy’s Inc – IR Presentation By Callum Turcan Retailers (XRT, RTH) have been struggling as the e-commerce shift has stressed margins and hurt foot traffic at stores and malls all across America. Macy’s Inc (M) had fared better than most, but that’s beginning to change. The company reported second quarter FY2019 earnings on August 14 which came with a guidance cut that saw shares of Macy’s plummet below their late-2017 lows. While Macy’s recovered throughout the trading day, the market is clearly signaling that investors are expecting more pain is ahead. As of this writing, shares of Macy’s yield ~9.0%, a major red flag. Guidance Cut Management cut earnings guidance for the full fiscal year while keeping estimates … Read more

Mall Retail Armageddon?

We think investors should be extremely cautious if they are interested in any mall retailers. Mall REITs are starting to feel some of the pain, too. By Brian Nelson, CFA Our latest channel checks at the malls foreshadowed what eventually turned into a terrible showing during the first quarter for the department stores such as J.C. Penney, Kohl’s and Nordstrom, but the apparel names and other niche shops are feeling the pain, too. It is becoming eerie when visiting the malls these days. In some of the locations we’re visiting, hardly anyone is there! Generation Z may not pick up the slack from the millennial generation, and it is showing up in the numbers big time. Here’s a run down … Read more

Facebook’s Huge New Opportunity in Instagram Checkout, Reiterating Fair Value Estimate ~$230

Image Source: Facebook’s Instagram We continue to like Facebook, and we’re huge fans of Instagram Checkout. Many may not know it yet, but Instagram Checkout may mark the beginning of retailers’ websites becoming obsolete. The sell-off last summer in Facebook was a big gift for those that stuck with our thesis. Brian Nelson, CFA I think one of the things that financial advisors and financial planners do extremely well is explain the concept of patience to their clients. Can you imagine if a client cashed out upon every 15%-20% decline? That’d be a recipe for continuous disaster. On the path to the market setting broader market highs in 2018, there have been many disappointments along the way. There have been … Read more

Our Reports on Stocks in the Retail–Apparel (Women’s, Men’s, Children’s) Industry

Structure of the Retail–Apparel Industry The retail clothing space is incredibly competitive, very fragmented, and heavily exposed to cyclical pressures and consumer spending patterns. Distribution and storefronts remain crucial, but online threats are becoming ever more apparent. Predicting the correct fashion styles during various seasons of the year continues to be the primary driver impacting the operating results of constituents, and brands can fall out of favor with consumers relatively quickly. Though some firms have developed a dedicated customer following that has helped mitigate abrupt market share shifts, we’re generally neutral on the industry. We no longer provide reports on stocks in the Retail–Apparel (Women’s, Men’s, Children’s) industry. We cover more apparel companies. Click here.
