Abbott Expects Strong Earnings Expansion in 2021

Image Shown: We use a discounted cash flow model to derive a fair value estimate range for companies in our coverage. The high end of our fair value estimate range for Abbott is $125 per share. We’re maintaining this range after its first-quarter 2021 report. Image Source: Valuentum’s 16-page stock report of Abbott. Presentation: How to Use our 16-page Stock Reports (pdf) >>  By Callum Turcan On April 20, Abbott Laboratories (ABT) reported first quarter 2021 earnings that missed consensus top-line estimates but beat consensus bottom-line estimates. Last quarter, Abbott Laboratories’ ‘Diagnostics’ revenues more than doubled year-over-year due primarily to its COVID-19 pandemic-related offerings, while its ‘Medical Device’ and ‘Nutrition’ revenues were up 9% and 6% year-over-year on an organic … Read more

With Net Debt and Trading at 40x 2021 Earnings, Mettler-Toledo Is Too Pricey

Image Source: Metler-Toledo By Callum Turcan and Brian Nelson, CFA On November 9, we increased our fair value estimate for shares of Mettler-Toledo International Inc (MTD) by a significant margin. Though our updated fair value estimate for shares is $870 each, MTD is trading at ~$1,190 at this time, well north of even the high end of our new fair value estimate range (~$1,040). We expect Mettler-Toledo to post greater than expected revenue growth and operating margin expansion over the coming years, which underpins our increased free cash flow growth forecasts for the firm from our prior valuation assessment, but shares still seem way to pricey even after the fair value estimate increase. Mettler-Toledo manufacturers precision instruments used in laboratories, … Read more

Johnson & Johnson Once Again Raises Guidance

Image Shown: An overview of Johnson & Johnson’s financial performance during the third quarter of fiscal 2020. Image Source: Johnson & Johnson – Third Quarter of Fiscal 2020 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan On October 13, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) reported third quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended September 27, 2020) that beat consensus non-GAAP EPS estimates and consensus GAAP revenue estimates, though its GAAP EPS fell short of consensus estimates likely due to turbulence created by the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic. Johnson & Johnson’s GAAP revenues were up 2% year-over-year last fiscal quarter while its GAAP gross margin stayed broadly flat at 66.9%. A sharp reduction in other expenses resulted in Johnson & Johnson’s GAAP net income more … Read more

Outperformance of Valuentum’s COVID-19 Ideas

Image: Valuentum’s COVID-19 ideas. Hypothetical returns are calculated on a price basis. — Dear members: —On March 17, Valuentum released its best ideas for the COVID-19 pandemic. The original article can be found at the following link, “Top Ten Ideas for Consideration Amid COVID-19.” The note is significant for two reasons: 1) it was released practically at the March bottom, and 2) it identified outperforming ideas, which on an equal-weight basis outperformed the S&P 500 since then by 20 percentage points, generating a hypothetical price-only return of 64.2% (the dividend adjustment is negligible since then so it was left out of the calculation). — Please note that this is the only list that we released for our top 10 ideas … Read more

3 Lessons in Portfolio Management Over 10 Years

Dear members: — We’re finally getting a pause in the rapid ascent of the markets on September 3rd. Though headlines may look scary and momentum/volatility investors could start to pile on to the downside, a modest retracement is actually a good thing. We continue to focus on the long haul with our processes, and we’re viewing the sell-off as profit taking, for the most part. — In the near term, the markets will also have to digest some speculators betting on mean reversion between “value” (cyclical) versus “growth” (secular), but we maintain the view that the value-versus-growth conversation is largely nonsense (see block quotes below), and mean reversion is something akin to the gamblers’ fallacy, in my humble opinion. Investors should also continue … Read more
