ICYMI: Questions for Valuentum’s Brian Nelson

Valuentum’s President Brian Nelson, CFA, answers your questions. Q: What Is Valuentum? A: In short, it is a strategy that combines the concepts of value and momentum within individual stocks. We measure value through the cash-based sources of intrinsic value – net cash on the balance sheet and future expected free cash flow. We measure momentum rather simply, generally via relative strength or other technical and momentum indicators. We like stocks with strong net cash positions on the balance sheet, ones that are generating tremendous free cash flow, and have strong secular growth prospects such that the prospect for expectations of free cash flow can continue to be ratcheted higher. Today, most Valuentum stocks are included in the stylistic area … Read more

Fed Rate Decision, UAW Strike Continues, Microsoft Ups Payout

Image Source: Mike Mozart By Brian Nelson, CFA If you’re thinking like us about the ongoing Fed rate-hiking cycle, you’re probably thinking that perhaps we’ll see another rate hike or two down the road, even if the Fed pauses at today’s September 20 meeting. However, whether the Fed pauses from here on out or executes a couple more rate hikes, it really shouldn’t matter much to long-term investors. From where we stand, the conversation about interest rates should now be shifting away from worries about elevated inflation to the future positive prospects that correspond to the work that the Fed has already done. With the market-cap weighted S&P 500 (SPY) just a stone’s throw away from all-time highs, despite aggressive … Read more

ALERT: Going to “Fully Invested” in the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio

Image: Since the publishing of the first edition of the book Value Trap, the stylistic area of large cap growth (SCHG) has meaningfully outperformed both the equal-weight S&P 500 (SPY) and small cap value (IWN). ALERT: We’re ‘Raising Cash’ in the Newsletter Portfolios

Image: American Union Bank, New York City. April 26, 1932. Public Domain “We firmly believe that an investment in a bank must come with the acknowledgement of the distinct possibility that another financial crisis may occur at an unknown time in the future. Why? Banks do not keep a 100% reserve against deposits. Our good friend George Bailey knew this very well when he tried to discourage Bedford Falls residents from making a “run” on the famous and beloved Building and Loan.” – Brian Nelson, CFA, September 4, 2013   SUMMARY OF CHANGES Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Johnson & Johnson (JNJ): 4%-6% à 0% Exxon Mobil (XOM): 4%-6% à 0% Chevron (CVX) 3%-5% à 0% Dollar General (DG): 3%-5% à 0% Korn/Ferry (KFY): 1%-2% à 0% … Read more

This Remains a Technically-Driven Stock Market

Image: We expect the S&P 500 (SPY) to test support at both its technical uptrend and the 200-day moving average. In the event the SPY breaks through technical support, we’d be looking to “raise cash” across the newsletter portfolios. By Brian Nelson, CFA S&P 500 companies will end 2022 with roughly a 4%-5% decline in fourth-quarter 2022 earnings, according to a February 17 report from FactSet. The Communications Services (XLC), Materials (XLB), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) were the three weakest sectors showing year-over-year earnings declines in the fourth quarter. The two biggest earnings misses during the quarter, in our view, were Goldman Sachs’ (GS) nightmare report and Intel’s (INTC) huge miss and terrible outlook. However, for the most part, fourth-quarter earnings … Read more

(CAT) to $238 per share from $192 previously. As witnessed in Deere & Company’s (DE) fiscal fourth-quarter results, too, Caterpillar is driving considerable pricing expansion across its portfolio, and the impact on its financials has been quite impressive.
