Is a Stock Market Crash Coming? — Coronavirus Update and P/E Ratios

Image Source: World Health Organization, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Situation Report — 32 We don’t think this is the environment to put new capital to work, and we remain highly cautious of what COVID-19 means for global economic growth not just in the first quarter of 2020 but for the rest of this year (maybe longer). Right now, the US markets are not really factoring in anything related to COVID-19, and perhaps may be adjusting to China’s stimulus in artificially propping up the markets as if the outbreak is somehow a “positive thing.” With the S&P 500 trading at 19.0 forward earnings estimates–estimates that are likely too high given the evidence we are seeing with respect to a slowdown due … Read more

Our Reports on Stocks in the Building Materials Industry

Image Source: Scott Structure of the Building Materials Industry The building materials industry is made up of firms that produce a wide range of materials for use in new/remodeled housing and commercial/industrial construction projects. Demand for and the prices of building materials are very cyclical/volatile and are tied to general economic conditions, including the level of housing starts, existing home sales, and floor-space growth, all of which are beyond the control of industry participants. As a result of the housing bust, significant production overcapacity still exists for some materials, resulting in ongoing pricing pressures. We don’t like the structure of the group. We’ve optimized our building materials coverage, the reports of which can be found here.

Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

Shares of Home Depot Appear Overvalued

Image Shown: Shares of Home Depot Inc sold off aggressively on November 19 after management reduced the company’s full-year same-store sales and revenue growth guidance for fiscal 2019 during the firm’s third quarter earnings report. By Callum Turcan On November 19, Home Depot (HD) reported third-quarter earnings for fiscal 2019 (period November 3, 2019), and same-store sales growth fell way short of expectations, which sent shares of HD sharply lower on the day. Company-wide same-store sales rose by 3.6% year-over-year, supported by 3.8% year-over-year growth in the US last quarter. While decent, the market was pricing shares of HD to outperform which we’ll cover in a moment. Please note Home Depot’s fiscal 2018 was a 53-week period, while its fiscal … Read more

Honeywell’s Aerospace Division Its Crown Jewel

We’re huge fans of Honeywell. The company’s Aero operations are its crown jewel, and while Boeing is facing some troubles these days, we don’t expect much impact on Honeywell at all. In fact, we expect commercial aerospace to remain strong, even in the face of broader industrial weakness. The risks to the company’s HBT business could be starting to mount given some concerns in commercial real estate, but management isn’t really seeing any signs of yet, pointing to only moderating growth in 2020. The SPS division, while a headwind, probably won’t be a factor next year, but it could bounce back as inventories are cleared from the channel. Home Depot, Lowe’s Largely Unfazed By Lumber Price Deflation

Image Source: Mike Mozart The home improvement retailing market appears very, very healthy, and while consumers could have already taken advantage of ultra-low rates to do home repairs, additional Fed cuts certainly won’t hurt the backdrop for home improvement retailers. Home Depot and Lowe’s continue to put up solid results. By Brian Nelson, CFA On August 20, Home Depot (HD) reported decent second-quarter results, with total reported sales advancing 1.2% on a year-over-year basis thanks to solid comparable store sales expansion of 3% (3.1% in the U.S.). Net earnings came in at $3.17 per share, growing 3.9% from the same period a year ago. Though many viewed the comp performance as somewhat disappointing, management noted that it experienced “accelerating comp … Read more

RYAM: Terrible Business, Potentially Cheap Stock

Image Source: First Quarter 2019 Financial Presentation Materials Rayonier Advanced Materials has seen better days, but has the market overreacted? We don’t think there are many businesses that have poorer industry structure, but if the company can get things back on track, normalized free cash flow indicates substantial upside potential. Commodity prices and tariffs remain big wild cards to this story, and the Valuentum investor always waits for technicals and momentum indicators to turn decidedly positive first. By Brian Nelson, CFA Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM) was spun out of Rayonier (RYN) a few years ago. The company is a leader “of cellulose-based technologies, including high purity cellulose specialties, a natural polymer commonly found in cell phone and computer screens, filters … Read more
