There Will Be Volatility

By Brian Nelson, CFA Last year, 2022, was a big test for equity investors, and the downside volatility that we witnessed during the year wasn’t comfortable, to say the least. Following the COVID-19 crash and rebound during 2020, and then the market surge in 2021, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say many investors’ heads are probably still spinning from all the volatility witnessed to start this decade. That said, part of what we’ve been warning about the past few years with respect to the equity market, especially in Value Trap, is that the proliferation of price-agnostic trading (e.g. quant, machine/algorithmic trading, etc.) will only lead to more and more market volatility, so while we were somewhat surprised by last … Read more

Call Me Unconcerned

Image: Large cap growth has dominated returns the past five years. The Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio continues to have significant exposure to this area. By Brian Nelson, CFA When it comes to the financial markets, the debt ceiling debate is nothing to worry about. Countries (sovereigns) cannot generally default on debt that is denominated in their own currency. The concern that there will be any sort of calamity if the U.S. government doesn’t raise the debt ceiling is far overblown, in our view. The political will of the U.S. to pay its debt will only resolve itself in time, and any risk premium built into Treasuries as a result of the debt ceiling showdown will be fleeting. Of course, nobody … Read more

Adobe Acrobat Pro Prices Up 33%; Price Tag of Figma Deal Remains Overhang on Shares

Image: Adobe’s long-term market opportunity is huge. Image Source: Adobe By Brian Nelson, CFA All things considered, fiscal 2022 was a solid year for Adobe (ADBE), as reported in its latest quarterly earnings report December 15. The company generated record revenue, operating income, and operating cash flow, and we loved that management is talking in terms of the “next decade of growth,” not next quarter or even next year. We like executive suites that are positioning their companies for the long run, and we think Chairman and CEO Shantanu Narayen has done a great job leading the charge. Adobe is among the most well-known software companies due in part to its Adobe Acrobat software. Almost anyone that has applied for a job has … Read more

We include Oracle as an idea in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and shares of ORCL yield ~1.9% as of this writing. Quarterly Update In the fiscal fourth quarter, Oracle’s GAAP revenues grew by 5% year-over-year and were up … Read more

Cisco Systems Reduces Guidance After Noisy Quarter, Remains Free Cash Flow Giant Backed By Pristine Balance Sheet

Image Source: Cisco Systems Inc – Third Quarter of Fiscal 2022 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan On May 18, Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO) reported third quarter earnings for fiscal 2022 (period ended April 30, 2022) that missed consensus top-line estimates but beat consensus bottom-line estimates (specifically for its non-GAAP performance). One of the biggest updates from this earnings report was that Cisco Systems reduced its full year guidance for fiscal 2022. The news initially sent shares of CSCO sharply lower, though Cisco Systems remains a free cash flow cow with a pristine balance sheet. It was an incredibly noisy earnings report for the firm for reasons we will cover in this article. We include Cisco Systems as an idea … Read more

Oracle Buys Cerner

Image Source: Oracle Corporation – September 2019 Financial Analyst Meeting Presentation By Callum Turcan Oracle Corporation (ORCL) is one of our favorite dividend growth ideas that also earns high marks as it concerns ESG (environmental, social, and governance) investing standards. Oracle scores a nice 96 ESG rating with a strong showing across all three categories. We include shares of ORCL as an idea in both the Dividend Growth Newsletter and our ESG Newsletter portfolios. The high end of our fair value estimate range sits at $101 per share of Oracle, comfortably above where shares are … Read more

Adobe Signals Near Term Growth Rate Slowing Down, Longer Term Outlook Still Quite Bright

Image Source: Adobe Inc – December 2021 Financial Analysts Meeting IR Presentation By Callum Turcan On December 16, Adobe Inc (ADBE) reported fourth quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended December 3, 2021) that modestly beat consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. However, shares of ADBE plummeted in the wake of its latest earnings report as management signaled that the firm’s near term growth rate would slow down in fiscal 2022 versus levels seen in fiscal 2021. Investors were apparently hoping for more, though in our view, Adobe’s longer term growth outlook is still quite bright. Our fair value estimate sits at $576 per share of Adobe. Earnings Update The company’s GAAP revenues were up 20% year-over-year last fiscal quarter, reaching … Read more

We include Oracle as an idea in both the Dividend Growth Newsletter and ESG Newsletter portfolios (more on that here), and we couldn’t be more pleased with the company’s performance of late. Its pivot towards cloud-oriented offerings is playing out quite favorably as Oracle’s growth outlook is now quite bright. Earnings Update and Outlook Oracle’s GAAP revenues were up 6% year-over-year last fiscal quarter, hitting $10.4 billion. This was made possible via strong … Read more
