COVID-19 Crisis Intensifies

Image Source: CDC. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).  Our dearest members: — The world is being challenged today by what some including Bill Gates believe might be a “once-in-a-century pathogen.” We do not know the eventual outcome, whether the impact of this illness ends up being as profound as the Spanish Influenza of 1918-1919 (which inflicted a death toll in the tens of millions), but we maintain our view the markets have yet to come to grips with the impact of COVID-19 on economic activity and potential ramifications on the global economy and the banking system.  — What is currently a “biological” crisis may turn into an all-out global financial crisis, one that could end up worse than the 2008/2009 mortgage meltdown. Instead … Read more

Is a Stock Market Crash Coming? — Coronavirus Update and P/E Ratios

Image Source: World Health Organization, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Situation Report — 32 We don’t think this is the environment to put new capital to work, and we remain highly cautious of what COVID-19 means for global economic growth not just in the first quarter of 2020 but for the rest of this year (maybe longer). Right now, the US markets are not really factoring in anything related to COVID-19, and perhaps may be adjusting to China’s stimulus in artificially propping up the markets as if the outbreak is somehow a “positive thing.” With the S&P 500 trading at 19.0 forward earnings estimates–estimates that are likely too high given the evidence we are seeing with respect to a slowdown due … Read more

Our Reports on Stocks in the Alcoholic Beverage Industry

Image Source: Jhong Dizon Structure of the Beverages (alcoholic) Industry The beer industry is structured as an oligopoly, with three players generating over half of industry profits. Though smaller industry constituents may price competitively at times, we view the overall industry structure as a rational oligopoly. Further consolidation in the space cannot be ruled out, and we would not be surprised to see larger players continuing to participate. Global operators will benefit from exposure to Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where beer consumption is growing at a pace several times that of mature markets such as North America and Western Europe. We like the structure of the group. We’ve reallocated our resources to cover more recession-resistant stocks. See here.

Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

Owens-Illinois’ Debt Load Is Daunting, We Are Staying Away From This Value Trap

Image Source: Owens-Illinois Inc – IR Presentation By Callum Turcan Owens-Illinois Inc (OI) is a global manufacturer of glass packaging products, and we see the firm as a major beneficiary of the shift in consumer preferences towards non-plastic packaging options for health and environmental reasons. As of this writing, shares of OI yield 1.9% on a forward-looking basis after management initiated a new dividend policy that saw common quarterly payouts commence in 2019. While Owens-Illinois’ share price below $11/share, as it is at the time of this writing, appears cheap at first glance because shares are trading at a steep discount to our $17 per share fair value estimate, we caution that its technicals are telling another story. Investors were … Read more

US-China Trade Spats Continue, More Reports

US-China Trade Spats Continue, More Reports — Trade spats between US and China are back in the news. President Donald Trump has set Friday for a tariff increase (raising the tariff from 10% to 25% on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods), but we think the move is primarily to bring China back to the negotiating table as the White House believes China is “reneging” on some of its trade promises. Chinese Vice President Liu He is planning to visit the US this week, but there may be structural barriers preventing the two countries from being able to come together in a long-term accord. — The US may be too rigid in its demands, and China may not be able to put into … Read more

Altria’s Sprawling Business to Underperform Long-Term Bottom-Line Target in 2019

Image Source: Melanie Tata Altria’s business has grown increasingly complex recently as it has levered up to add exposure to new growth opportunities. We don’t find the convoluted company attractive, even after considering its lofty yield, and its core cigarette business continues to face material industry-wide volume declines. By Kris Rosemann We extinguished Altria (MO) from the simulated Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio December 21 after assessing the announcement of its deal to acquire a 35% stake in US e-cigarette leader JUUL Labs. Here’s our conclusion from the announcement of our decision, “Parting with Altria on News of Stake in JUUL:” We think Altria may have thrown in the towel on harvesting its core smoking demographic and may now be entering … Read more
