Why *NOW* Do You Care About Boeing’s Stock?

Image Source: Robert Sullivan In no, way shape or form should you *now* be interested in Boeing’s stock. Let’s explain. By Brian Nelson, CFA I used to cover Boeing (BA) full-time when I worked as a senior equity analyst at Morningstar many moons ago. I remember pounding the table on the name to many a buyside shop in Chicago when it must have been trading well under $100 at the time (now more than 10 years ago). I remember posting an old video of me with Pat Dorsey, who now runs his own shop in Chicago, Dorsey Asset Management. That video used to be here, but as in what usually happens on the Internet, the darn thing doesn’t exist anymore. … Read more

Resetting Your Mental Model

Image Source: affen ajlfe A version of this article was originally published on our website October 6, 2013. Having the right mental model and using the right information can be the reason why you win or lose in investing. “What is the definition of timeliness? Many believe it is getting information to investors as quickly as possible after an event, or updating something every single day or week for immaterial information. I believe in a different definition of timeliness. I believe timeliness is using all information available in a mosaic approach to accurately predict the event before it even happens. Take Kinder Morgan as the latest example. We were the only ones predicting what was going to happen before it did. To investors, … Read more

FLIR Systems Repositions Itself

Image Source: FLIR Systems Inc – November 2019 IR Presentation By Callum Turcan An appealing aspect of the defense industry is that it’s largely counter-cyclical, especially for companies that do a lot of business with the US Department of Defense (‘DoD’). The National Defense Authorization Act (‘NDAA’) that covers fiscal 2020 allows for a base budget level of $658.4 billion and an additional $71.5 billion has been allocated to overseas contingency operations. Noteworthy aspects of the NDAA covering fiscal 2020, which was signed into law by President Trump in December 2019, include the creation of a Space Force, a 3.1% pay increase for troops, and paid family leave for all federal workers. With a budget of $738 billion, up $21 … Read more

We’ve Dropped Coverage of the Aerospace Supply Chain

Image Source: Kevin Structure of the A&D Supplier Industry The aerospace supply chain will benefit from the multi-year backlogs at the airframe makers, Boeing and Airbus. Though the current upswing looks robust, commercial aerospace has historically been cyclical and remains influenced by airline profits, passenger traffic, credit-market health, and geopolitical conditions. Participants generally operate under contracts with significant long-term price concessions, so cost-containment remains critical. The strongest suppliers are those that have long-standing customer relationships, technical expertise, and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. We like the group. We’ve dropped coverage of the A&D Supplier Industry.

Honeywell’s Aerospace Division Its Crown Jewel

We’re huge fans of Honeywell. The company’s Aero operations are its crown jewel, and while Boeing is facing some troubles these days, we don’t expect much impact on Honeywell at all. In fact, we expect commercial aerospace to remain strong, even in the face of broader industrial weakness. The risks to the company’s HBT business could be starting to mount given some concerns in commercial real estate, but management isn’t really seeing any signs of yet, pointing to only moderating growth in 2020. The SPS division, while a headwind, probably won’t be a factor next year, but it could bounce back as inventories are cleared from the channel. By Brian Nelson, CFA Honeywell (HON) has facilitated a number of changes … Read more

The United Technologies-Raytheon Merger Will Create a Defense and Commercial Aerospace Giant

Image Source: United Technologies Corporation – IR Presentation By Callum Turcan On June 9, United Technologies Corporation (UTX) and Raytheon Company (RTN) agreed to a merger of equals that if approved, will create a new giant in the aerospace & defense world. The combined company will sell anything from Patriot surface-to-air missile systems to national governments to power generation and cyber protection products for commercial aircraft. United Technologies and Raytheon hope that as a combined entity, the new company will have the scale required to be truly competitive in the commercial aerospace industry while maintaining the status of a reliable defense contractor. Both CEO’s went on CBNC together to defend the deal and explained it as “complementary” to highlight the … Read more

Disney’s Mixed Report, Stamps Implodes, and Astronics for the Radar, More Reports

Disney’s Mixed Report, Stamps Implodes, and Astronics for the Radar, More Reports — In alphabetical order by ticker symbol: ATRO, DIS, ETSY, GDOT, NYT, PBPB, ROKU, STMP, SVMK, TPR, TVTY — Astronics (ATRO): We are strongly considering one of our favorite small-cap aerospace suppliers after a solid showing during its first quarter, results released May 8. If you may recall, Astronics was a winner in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio in the past, and even with Boeing on the skids given 737 MAX crashes, we’re not shying away from considering aerospace supply-chain exposure, given the massive backlogs at the airframe makers. Astronics’ sales advanced more than 16% in the quarter, and it registered its fifth consecutive quarter of record aerospace revenue. … Read more

Lockheed Martin May Be a FCF Cow But the Company Should Consider Debt Reduction Over Share Buybacks

Image Source: Lockheed Martin By Callum Turcan Known around the world as the manufacturer of F-35 stealth fighters and Blackhawk Helicopters, Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) is the world’s leading defense contractor and as of this writing yields a nice 3.0%. While burdened by a significant net debt load, Lockheed Martin has consistently been a free cash flow cow enabling the firm to sport decent dividend coverage. Last year, 70% of Lockheed Martin’s net sales came from the US government, highlighting how domestic annual defense spending levels are very important to the company’s financial performance. Growing Backlog Lockheed Martin’s order backlog stood at $130.5 billion at the end of 2018, up 24% or $25.0 billion from year-end 2017 levels. The company … Read more
