Update on Best Idea Alphabet’s Self-Driving Taxi Upside

Image Shown: Shares of Alphabet Inc Class C have boomed higher year-to-date as of early-September 2021. We see ample room for additional upside. By Callum Turcan We are enormous fans of large cap US equities because these entities then to be tremendous free cash flow generators, generally have net cash rich balance sheets, and their promising growth outlooks are underpinned by secular growth tailwinds. Alphabet Inc (GOOG) (GOOGL) fits the bill, and we include Alphabet Class C shares as a top-weighted idea in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Let’s provide some updates on the company’s self-driving taxi ambitions in this note concerning its Waymo spinoff. Self-Driving Taxi Upside Alphabet announced that it was spinning off Waymo, the company’s self-driving unit, … Read more

Kohl’s and Macy’s Bounce Back But Long Term Remains Ominous

Image Source: Kohl’s Corporation – Second Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan In this article, we cover the recent earnings reports of two US department stores as the domestic economy steadily emerges from the worst of the coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, keeping headwinds from the “delta” variant in mind. The department store business model continues to lose share from e-commerce and specialty retailers. Amazon (AMZN) is also considering opening large physical retail operations that would largely resemble department stores, starting with locations in California and Ohio. The long term remains ominous for department-store retail, in our view.  Kohl’s On August 19, Kohl’s Corporation (KSS) reported second quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended July 31, 2021) that easily … Read more

Amazon Leads Market Lower, Free Cash Flow Disappoints

Image: Amazon’s free cash flow performance was hugely disappointing during its second quarter of 2021. By Brian Nelson, CFA We were disappointed in Amazon’s (AMZN) mixed second-quarter report released after the bell July 29. The e-commerce and web services giant missed revenue expectations, while the company’s bottom-line earnings-per-share number of $15.12 came in better than the consensus figure. We find it highly ironical that Amazon’s shares are selling off on a hugely profitable quarter when years ago the Street was complaining about it bleeding red ink. Shares of Amazon are trading down to about our fair value estimate of ~$3,343 at the time of this writing; the sell-off may be deserved. Netflix’s Free Cash Flow Remains Poor While Competition Is Intensifying

Image shown: Netflix continues to experience robust growth and improvements in its operating margin, but free cash flow remains weak. Image source: Netflix’s second-quarter earnings shareholder letter. By Brian Nelson, CFA We’re okay with watching Netflix (NFLX) from the sidelines. The company has been lumped in with other companies such as Facebook (FB), Apple (AAPL), and Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) as a “FANG” stock, but the economics of Netflix’s business is quite different than this “peer” group, while the competition is considerably more intense. During the past 52 weeks, shares of Netflix are roughly flat compared to a market that is up over 30%, as measured by the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (SPY). While Facebook, Apple and Alphabet continue to … Read more

Kroger Raises Guidance After Solid Earnings Report

Image Source: Kroger Co – First Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan Grocers are facing tough year-over-year comparisons due to the pantry stockpiling dynamic seen in 2020 in the wake of the coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, though demand for consumer staples products remains healthy. On June 17, Kroger Co (KR) reported first quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended May 22, 2021) that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Kroger’s management team also noted how the grocer views the current inflationary landscape, which we will cover in this note. Earnings Update and Guidance Boost Though Kroger’s same-store sales fell by 4.1% in the fiscal first quarter, on a two-year stack basis (the sum of its same-store … Read more

Best Idea Alphabet on the Move!

Image Shown: Shares of Alphabet Inc Class C have been on a nice upward climb over the past several months with ample room for additional capital appreciation upside, in our view. We include shares of GOOG as a top-weighted idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. By Callum Turcan Companies with real pricing power are well-positioned to navigate headwinds arising from inflation pressures as cost increases can be passed along to the consumer and then some (i.e. price increases above inflation). Many large cap tech firms fit this bill including one of our favorite ideas Alphabet Inc (GOOG) (GOOGL), with an eye towards the pricing strength seen at its enormous digital advertising business. We include shares of Alphabet Class C … Read more

Walmart’s E-Commerce Growth Supports Long Term Dividend Strength

Image Source: Mike Mozart By Brian Nelson, CFA On Tuesday, May 18, Walmart (WMT) reported first-quarter 2022 results for the 13-week period ended April 30, 2021. Leading the charge was a 37%, 47%, and 49% leap in e-commerce sales in its Walmart U.S., Sam’s Club, and Walmart International segments, respectively, with management noting that sales through its online channel have “more than doubled over the last two years.” Walmart continues to embrace e-commerce and omni-channel capabilities, and that bodes well for the long-term sustainability of its dividend payout, in our view. Walmart’s shares yield ~1.5% at the time of this writing, and they have years of dividend growth ahead of them, in our view. As one of the largest big … Read more

ViacomCBS Makes Big Bet on Streaming

Image Source: ViacomCBS Inc – Fourth Quarter of 2020 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan After Viacom and CBS were reunited in December 2019, the new entity ViacomCBS Inc (VIAC) has finally started to gain some traction on the video streaming front. The service CBS All Access, which has since been rebranded as Paramount+, was largely a dud and did not gain the level of attention that Walt Disney Company’s (DIS) Disney+ service (more on Disney’s video streaming successes here and here), AT&T Inc’s (T) HBO Max service (AT&T’s video streaming growth strategy is picking up steam as we covered here), or Netflix Inc’s (NFLX) namesake service (more on Netflix here) were able to generate. For background, ViacomCBS’s operations include … Read more

AT&T’s Video Streaming Growth Story Is Starting to Take Flight

Image Source: AT&T Inc – 2021 Investor & Analyst Day Presentation By Callum Turcan On March 12, AT&T Inc (T) hosted its 2021 Analyst & Investor Day event. In conjunction with the event, AT&T issued long-term financial and operational guidance which included a substantial upward revision in its expected HBO/HBO Max subscriber growth over the coming years. We continue to be big fans of AT&T as a high yielding opportunity and include AT&T as an idea in the High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio (more here). As of this writing, shares of AT&T yield ~7.0%. Background Information In June 2018, AT&T completed its acquisition of Time Warner which gave AT&T the keys to Home Box Office (‘HBO’). A pillar of AT&T’s … Read more
