Caterpillar Misses Estimates and Revises Guidance Downwards

Image Source: Caterpillar Inc – Third quarter 2019 IR presentation By Callum Turcan On October 23, Caterpillar Inc (CAT) posted third-quarter 2019 earnings with both its top- and bottom-line performance falling well short of consensus expectations. Furthermore, management revised the firm’s adjusted (non-GAAP) EPS guidance for 2019 down to $10.90-$11.40 from $12.06-$13.06 previously, quite the reduction. Please note this represents Caterpillar’s second earnings guidance reduction so far this year. Caterpillar’s weak performance is about much more than just the industrial equipment supplier, it speaks unfavorably to the state of the global industrial economy. Our fair value estimate for Caterpillar stands at $156 per share, and shares of CAT yield 2.9% as of this writing. Revenue Growth Disappearing Management has adjusted … Read more

News Roundup: US-China Trade Talks, Plastics Prices, Vale, and Philip Morris

No changes to newsletter portfolios. By Kris Rosemann Reports of a potential trade agreement between the US and China (FXI) have hit the wire. The deal is rumored to include lower Chinese tariffs on farm, chemical, auto, and other US products, and the elimination of many or all US tariffs on Chinese products. China is also reportedly exploring a 3% reduction in the value-added tax it imposes on manufacturing, which could provide a 0.6% boost to Chinese GDP, according to some estimates. Both reports are welcome news to investors as concerns over global economic growth persist. A US-China trade deal could be announced as soon as the end of this month, but the recent breakdown in conflict resolution talks between … Read more

Here It Comes… Apple’s Shot Across the Bow

Valuentum’s Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) Distribution

The weighted average cost of capital is one of the most subjective measures in corporate finance, but it is also one of the most important ones. “The most important item over time in valuation is obviously interest rates…If interest rates are destined to be at low levels…It makes any stream of earnings from investments worth more money. The bogey is always what government bonds yield….Any investment is worth all the cash you’re going to get out between now and judgment day discounted back. The discounting back is affected by whether you choose interests rates like those of Japan or interest rates like those we had in 1982…When we had 15 percent short-term rates in 1982, it was silly to pay … Read more

In the News: More Tariff Talk Keeps Markets Volatile

Many market observers were caught by surprise after President Trump continued down a path of escalating trade tensions late July 10. By Kris Rosemann As with many developments surrounding the Chinese (FXI, MCHI) economy, metals have found themselves at the fore of the discussion. After the Trump Administration threatened additional 10% tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports July 10, copper (COPX) and other metals prices plunged as the newest list of targeted goods includes manufacturing export industries, electronics, textiles, metal components, and auto parts. It is worth noting that the US imports far more Chinese goods than vice versa, suggesting China would not be able to match US tariffs dollar-for-dollar if a full-on trade war ensues, though such a … Read more

Demand Bouncing Off Multi-Year Bottom at Caterpillar

Improvement in Caterpillar’s underlying end markets is driving its performance, and management took the opportunity following a solid showing in the first quarter of 2018 to raise its bottom-line guidance for the full year. The market, however, did not look favorably on management’s comments that the first quarter should be expected to be the “high-water mark” for the year in terms of margin performance. We’ve updated our fair value estimate of shares. By Kris Rosemann It may seem like an eternity ago, but as recently as 2016, Caterpillar (CAT) was at the tail end of its only stretch of four years of consecutive annual sales declines in more than 90 years of business. The demand environment for the heavy machinery … Read more
