Be Careful With Celebrity Endorsement of Investment Products

Dear members: — Have you ever wondered why so many trust the TV for financial advice or stock tips? — You guessed it: It comes back to “brain science” or the concept of familiarity. When we see a celebrity or our favorite stock guru on the television, it arouses our emotions and connects us with the idea, making the experience more memorable. The brain tends to treat our favorite newscaster or celebrity as a trusted, familiar friend, and therefore we translate those feelings into expertise and a “valid” endorsement. — As humans, we can sometimes be misled. Recently, Kim Kardashian had to pay $1.26 million to settle an SEC charge that she promoted a cryptocurrency while failing to disclose she … Read more

Enterprise Products Partners Reports Strong 3Q, Impressive ~7.5% Distribution Yield

Image Source: Enterprise Products Partners By Brian Nelson, CFA There are now only 15 holdings in the ALPS Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP) as the number of master limited partnerships (MLPs) on the market continues to shrink. According to data from ALPS Advisors, the Alerian MLP Infrastructure Index, on a total return basis, has advanced just 0.74% during the past 10 years. During the past half-decade or so, the group has undergone a considerable number of distribution cuts, as energy markets have waned. The ALPS Alerian MLP ETF is having a much better year during 2022, however. The performance so far during 2022 won’t make up for the collapse in the sector during the past decade, but it will help. Year-to-date, … Read more

Must Watch: MPT Failures and High Yield Dividend Breakdown Spiral!

Did you know that Valuentum’s income ideas are holding up great this year, far better than the traditional 60/40 stock/bond portfolio and what some call “sucker” yields, those companies with 8% dividend yields or higher? — The 60/40 stock/bond portfolio is down ~20% so far in 2022 and some high-yield stocks like mortgage REITs are down nearly 40%, but Valuentum’s income-oriented simulated newsletter portfolios, the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio, are estimated to be down just 8.4% and just 10.1%, respectively, in 2022. — Preventing huge drawdowns in retirement is the name of the game, and those pursuing modern portfolio theory (MPT) have been caught by surprise, while income investors reaching for 8%+ yields may have just experienced permanent … Read more

Exxon Mobil Surging Higher with Room for Upside

Image Shown: Exxon Mobil Corporation put up stellar results when reporting its second quarter earnings in late July 2022. Image Source: Exxon Mobil Corporation – Second Quarter of 2022 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) posted second quarter 2022 earnings that flew past consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. The tailwind provided by elevated raw energy resources prices, rising oil & gas production volumes, ongoing cost structure improvement initiatives, and strong “crack spreads” (refining margins) more than offset headwinds arising from its decision to exit Russia in March 2022 and foreign currency headwinds due to a strong U.S. dollar. Exxon Mobil is one of our favorite energy ideas, and we include shares of XOM in several of … Read more

2022 Oil & Gas Market Update: “The Outlook for Crude Oil Prices Remains Quite Bullish”

Transcript Hello, this is Callum Turcan, Associate Director of Research at Valuentum Securities. WTI and Brent have pulled back moderately from recent highs, though near-term futures remain just above $100 per barrel which is well above levels seen last year. As of early July, both WTI and Brent are in backwardation, meaning spot prices are trading at a higher price than later dated future contracts. In other words, the trajectory of future crude oil prices is expected to have a downward slope. Please note that backwardation does not mean that things are going to rapidly deteriorate for the global energy complex, as this dynamic is due to global oil inventories steadily declining over the past two years or so. Backwardation … Read more

Evaluating the Exposure of Chevron and Exxon Mobil to Russia’s Energy Industry

Image Shown: Shares of Chevron Corporation (blue line) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (orange line) have skyrocketed over the past six months. By Callum Turcan In the wake of Russia invading Ukraine (again) in February 2022, geopolitical tensions between the West and Russia have reached levels last seen during the height of the Cold War. At the beginning of March 2022, near term WTI and Brent futures were trading north of $100 per barrel while liquified natural gas (‘LNG’) spot prices and European natural gas prices remained incredibly expensive. The supply-demand dynamics for crude oil and natural gas were already tight before this crisis, and in light of the expansive sanctions programs enacted by the West and some of its allies … Read more
