Coca Cola’s Pricing Strength Continues to Power Results

Image: Coca-Cola’s pace of price/mix expansion continues to drive strong performance. By Brian Nelson, CFA On February 13, Coca-Cola (KO) reported strong fourth quarter results that exceeded expectations on both the top and bottom lines. The standout metric in the quarter was organic revenue growth, which advanced an impressive 12% in the quarter thanks to a solid 9 percentage-point increase in price/mix and 3 percentage-point expansion in concentrate sales. The company’s outlook for 2024 was strong as well, with the company targeting organic revenue expansion of 6%-7% for the year, and we like the momentum behind Coca-Cola’s performance. Consumer Staples Struggling with Higher Inflationary Costs, Group Hits 52-Week Lows

Image: The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) has notched a new 52-week low, and investors should note that we don’t think consumer staples entities are immune to an environment of higher inflation, where their price increases may not be fully absorbed by the consumer. Due to the commoditization of many of the goods produced in the consumer staples space, we think the consumer may instead trade down to off-brands or white label (“store brand”) products than pay up for branded merchandise. By Brian Nelson, CFA On June 10, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Consumer Price Index Summary for May showing inflation continues at an elevated pace, “with the indexes for shelter, gasoline, and food being the largest … Read more

Image Source: PepsiCo Inc – CAGNY 2021 Presentation By Callum Turcan On July 13, PepsiCo Inc (PEP) reported second-quarter fiscal 2021 earnings (period ended June 12, 2021) that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Due to its strong performance during the first half of the fiscal year, PepsiCo raised its full-year guidance for fiscal 2021 in conjunction with its latest earnings report. Now the firm expects to post 6% organic sales growth (versus a mid-single-digit range previously) and 11% core constant currency EPS growth (versus a high-single-digit range previously) in fiscal 2021 on an annual basis. Foreign currency tailwinds favorably impacted its financial performance last fiscal quarter, and for the full fiscal year, PepsiCo sees these tailwinds boosting its … Read more

Coca-Cola Looks Ready to Break Out, Valuation Not Attractive Though

Image Shown: Coca-Cola’s technicals look like they are carving out a nice cup-and-handle pattern, but its valuation leaves a lot to be desired, in our view. By Brian Nelson, CFA On April 19, Coca-Cola (KO) reported solid first-quarter results that showed net revenue increasing 5% and its operating margin advancing 2.5 percentage points from the year-ago period. Comparable earnings per share leapt 8%, to $0.55. Very few companies have as strong a brand name and dividend track record as Coca-Cola, but investors should be cautious about its valuation, in our view. On the basis of our discounted cash-flow modeling approach, the high end of our fair value estimate range of Coca-Cola stands at $48 per share, which reflects over 20x … Read more

ICYMI: Survey Coming Later Today, More Market Volatility Expected

ICYMI: Survey Coming Later Today, More Market Volatility Expected Image: The market’s levels of volatility so far in 2020 have been among the greatest in history.
