Apple’s Second-Quarter Fiscal 2023 Results Were Good Enough

Image Source: Valuentum By Brian Nelson, CFA  On May 4, Apple (AAPL) reported second-quarter results for its fiscal 2023 for the period ending April 1, 2023, that were slightly better than consensus forecast, but we’re viewing the report as mixed. Revenue dropped 2.5% in the quarter on a year-over-year basis as better-than-expected resilience in iPhone sales could not offset weakness in Mac and iPad performance, and its quarterly EPS of $1.52 was unchanged from last year’s mark. Revenue in the company’s Services business jumped 5.4%, and the iPhone maker announced a $90 billion buyback program as it upped its quarterly dividend by more than 4%, to $0.24 per quarter. We plan to make a few tweaks to our valuation model … Read more

1Q 2023 Earnings Coming in Better Than Feared Thus Far

By Brian Nelson, CFA We’ve been receiving questions about the companies that we are looking to add to the Best Ideas Newsletter to replace the ones we recently removed, and I can say that we’re strongly considering adding Booking Holding (BKNG) and adding to the existing “position” in Chipotle (CMG) following their first-quarter 2023 results. We recently raised our fair value estimate for Booking Holding significantly (now $3,091; was $2,147 per share), and we expect a huge fair value increase at Chipotle in the coming weeks. Booking Holding will report its first-quarter 2023 earnings in early May, while Chipotle will report first-quarter 2023 results on April 25. We have several other ideas in mind to add to the Best Ideas … Read more

Consumers Feeling the Pinch; S&P 500 Bounces Off Technical Resistance; Elasticities Breaking Down for Staples Stocks

By Brian Nelson, CFA Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is the latest big tech company to announce big job cuts. The company that is still working to close its deal with Activision (ATVI) announced that it would slash 10,000 jobs, or about 4.5% of its workforce. The unemployment rate in the U.S. stands at just 3.5%, as recorded in December 2022, so even though we’re witnessing quite a number of layoffs in Silicon Valley, the labor markets are still very, very healthy. Those being laid off are finding jobs rather quickly, too. According to the WSJ, “about 79% of workers recently hired after a tech-company layoff or termination landed their new job within three months of starting their search.” Businesses have been … Read more

Don’t Let “Them” Spin the Narrative

By Brian Nelson, CFA Let’s call it how it is: 2022 was an absolute nightmare for the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio. During the year, the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio was down 16.9%, according to data from the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund Shares (VBIAX). During 2022, the S&P 500 (SPY) index was down 18.2%, meaning that the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio, despite allocating to 40% bonds, captured over 90% of the downside risk. Modern portfolio theory is dead: Stocks have done far better than bonds during upswings, and only slightly worse during downturns. The risk/reward for the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio just doesn’t add up anymore. Bond prices did not move inversely to stock prices during the COVID-19 meltdown, and they did not move inversely … Read more

Microsoft Hinted at Trouble in Calendar Q2 But AMD’s Massive $1 Billion Quarterly Q3 Revenue Miss Spells Big Problems for PC Market; Search and News Advertising Revenue Also Likely Weakening Substantially

Image Source: Fritzchens Fritz By Brian Nelson, CFA Things aren’t going well across the technology (XLK) landscape these days. Microsoft Corp (MSFT) said in mid-July Windows OEM revenue faced pressure in its quarter ended June 30, its fourth quarter of fiscal 2022, and noted that the “PC market…deteriorated in June (slide 15).” On its fourth-quarter fiscal 2022 conference call, the software and gaming giant said that its outlook “has the trends (it) saw in June continu(ing) through Q1 (the quarter ending in September 2022). Continued weakness in the PC market demand and advertising spend (is expected to) impact Windows OEM, Surface, LinkedIn and search and news advertising revenue.” We took note of this weakness at the time, but it … Read more

Things Are Bad Out There

“I don’t like this market one bit, but we have to endure. Markets will rise again, but there will be a lot more pain to come in the near term. We think the base case is that we get a very bad recession in 2023. We’ve yet to pull the trigger on put option ideas in the simulated newsletter portfolios, but we expect things to get worse before they get better. For readers seeking ongoing option ideas each month, please consider subscribing to our options commentary here.” – Brian Nelson, CFA By Brian Nelson, CFA Things are bad out there, and there’s probably no better way to say it. On September 28, Bloomberg reported that Apple Inc. (AAPL) is now … Read more

Update on Newsletter Portfolio Idea Apple

Image Shown: Shares of Apple Inc have rebounded strongly from their recent lows as of late August 2022. By Callum Turcan Apple Inc (AAPL) reported third-quarter results for fiscal 2022 (period ended June 25, 2022) that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Management also noted during Apple’s latest earnings update that supply chain constraints were beginning to ease a bit and that Apple’s near-term growth outlook was improving. We continue to like Apple as an idea in the newsletter portfolios. Shares of AAPL yield ~0.6% as of this writing, and there is an enormous amount of room for Apple to aggressively grow its per-share payout going forward given its financial strength. Earnings Update Apple’s GAAP revenues rose 2% year-over-year … Read more

The Stock Market Is Nearing Technical Support Levels

Image: This year has been a difficult one for equity investors, but the selling pressure that has been common in the markets may start to slow as broader indices such as the S&P 500 begin to approach technical support levels. On the S&P 500, we think there is substantial technical support in the 3,200-3,500 range, which to us suggests that further near-term downside may be limited. The S&P 500 closed at 3,674.84 on Friday, June 17, and we think fair value is much higher. By Brian Nelson, CFA  It’s been difficult to watch the stock market give up much of the gains reaped over the past year or so during the selling barrage that has occurred thus far in 2022. … Read more

Three Growth Stocks That Offer Tremendous Value!

Image: Some of the most attractive stocks on the market have both growth and value characteristics. By Brian Nelson, CFA As the market struggles to find a near term bottom, three of our favorite ideas are on sale. Meta and Alphabet are dirt cheap, in our view, while Microsoft has tremendous dividend growth prospects. We expect these three names to bounce back considerably once economic uncertainty subsides. Meta Platforms Meta Platfoms (META), formerly Facebook, has a portfolio of properties the world simply cannot do without, and the network effect that emanates from the nature of its properties creates a sizable competitive advantage where its advertising business model can proliferate, despite heightened competition from TikTok and the like. But for Meta, … Read more
