Another Great Day for Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Holdings!

Image: The holdings in the Best Ideas Newsletter during the trading session November 5. We continue to pound the table on our best ideas. By Brian Nelson, CFA The votes keep coming in for the Presidential Election of 2020, and it is a very high probability that Democratic nominee Joe Biden will become the next President of the United States. We don’t expect incumbent Donald Trump to go down without a fight however, and while we anticipate a bunch of news headlines in the coming weeks about recounts in battleground states, accusations of voter fraud, and the like, we also expect a peaceful transition of power once the dust settles. With many news outlets projecting Joe Biden will win the key … Read more

Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Holdings Are Surging!

Image: The holdings in the Best Ideas Newsletter during the trading session November 4. We continue to pound the table on our best ideas. By Brian Nelson, CFA If you were like me, you stayed up as long as you could last night watching the U.S. election coverage before it became too difficult to keep your eyes open. When I went to sleep, it seemed as though Donald Trump would be re-elected. The only state that appeared to flip to the Democrats from the 2016 election was Arizona, meaning Trump would still retain greater than the 270 electoral votes required to gain re-election. Well, that was last night, and this is today. As more and more votes came in last … Read more

We’re Reiterating Our $200 Fair Value Estimate for PayPal

We continue to be big fans of PayPal. The company has a pristine balance sheet, high quality cash flow profile, impressive growth outlook, and is trading well below its fair value estimate as of this writing. Though investors initially sold off shares of PYPL following its third-quarter report November 2 due to its expected growth trajectory slowing down in the near term, we’re reiterating our fair value estimate of $200 per share as PayPal continues to deliver impressive fundamental performance. PayPal’s medium- and long-term growth outlooks remain stellar. Venmo could be a source of significant upside in the medium-term, and we are monitoring events closely. By Callum Turcan On November 2, PayPal Holdings Inc (PYPL) reported third quarter 2020 earnings … Read more

News Brief: We Like Large Cap Growth, Big Cap Tech, and the NASDAQ

Image: Since 2010, a large cap growth ETF has outperformed the S&P 500 by nearly 150 percentage points (15,000 basis points). Since 2010, a large cap growth ETF has outperformed a small cap value ETF by over 275 percentage points, or 27,500 basis points (image not shown). We expect continued outperformance from companies within the large cap growth bucket. By Brian Nelson, CFA The markets have been see-sawing the past couple weeks as the global economy continues to recover and much of the world awaits the outcome of the 2020 US Presidential election. We think the equity markets have largely factored in the forecasted epidemiology curve with respect to COVID-19, including infection spikes across the world, so recent market volatility … Read more

Apple’s Growing Financial Tech Business

Image Shown: Shares of Apple Inc, a holding in both our Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios, have surged higher year-to-date. We see room for additional capital appreciation upside. By Callum Turcan We continue to be huge fans of Apple Inc (AAPL), and shares of the tech giant are included as a holding in both our Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios. Our fair value estimate for Apple sits at $140 per share, comfortably above where shares of AAPL are trading at as of this writing, indicating there is room for meaningful capital appreciation upside. Additionally, shares of AAPL yield a modest ~0.7% as of this writing, and we view its forward-looking dividend growth trajectory quite … Read more

Outperformance of Valuentum’s COVID-19 Ideas

Image: Valuentum’s COVID-19 ideas. Hypothetical returns are calculated on a price basis. — Dear members: —On March 17, Valuentum released its best ideas for the COVID-19 pandemic. The original article can be found at the following link, “Top Ten Ideas for Consideration Amid COVID-19.” The note is significant for two reasons: 1) it was released practically at the March bottom, and 2) it identified outperforming ideas, which on an equal-weight basis outperformed the S&P 500 since then by 20 percentage points, generating a hypothetical price-only return of 64.2% (the dividend adjustment is negligible since then so it was left out of the calculation). — Please note that this is the only list that we released for our top 10 ideas … Read more

3 Lessons in Portfolio Management Over 10 Years

Dear members: — We’re finally getting a pause in the rapid ascent of the markets on September 3rd. Though headlines may look scary and momentum/volatility investors could start to pile on to the downside, a modest retracement is actually a good thing. We continue to focus on the long haul with our processes, and we’re viewing the sell-off as profit taking, for the most part. — In the near term, the markets will also have to digest some speculators betting on mean reversion between “value” (cyclical) versus “growth” (secular), but we maintain the view that the value-versus-growth conversation is largely nonsense (see block quotes below), and mean reversion is something akin to the gamblers’ fallacy, in my humble opinion. Investors should also continue … Read more

The Merits of Concentrated Portfolios

My dear friends: — Many thanks for your continued interest in our work.  — Though uncertainty in the efficacy of any vaccine for coronavirus disease (“COVID-19”) remains, the New York Times reported today that the CDC “has notified public health officials in all 50 states and five large cities to prepare to distribute a coronavirus vaccine to health care workers and other high-risk groups as soon as late October or early November,” just weeks from now.  — While expected by the optimists, we continue to view this as good news. The sheer amount of resources, both public and private, seeking a vaccine for COVID-19 leads me to believe we’ll have one sooner than later, in time to set the economy up for a stronger-than-expected … Read more
