2019: Another Market Beating Year for the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio!

2019: Another Market Beating Year for the Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio! — Summary: — We estimate thus far the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio return has beat the S&P 500 by 2.8 percentage points during 2019 (34.4% versus 31.6% for the S&P 500, as measured by the SPY). — Our move to overweight Apple, Facebook, and Visa worked out wonderfully for members during 2019. We continue to overweight big winners, and we credit this to our team’s conviction in our very best ideas. —  We also made quite the savvy move in rolling over a solid gain in Chipotle (60%+) into even more shares of Apple stock during the year. We’re putting some of the best ideas right in front of … Read more

Health Care Sector Remains Hot

Image Shown: The Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF, a holding in both our Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios, has been on an upward tear over the past several years. Strong macro tailwinds combined with the ability for industries within the health care sector to generate meaningful shareholder value have been key to supporting strong capital appreciation of equities operating in the area of late. By Callum Turcan The Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) is a top holding in both our Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios. We like the exposure and diversification to health care equities that XLV provides. XLV yields ~1.5% as of this writing. State Street Corp (STT) acts as … Read more

Biotech and Pharma Roundup

Image Source: e-Magine Art Some big news in the world of biotech and pharmaceuticals has come out this week, starting Monday October 21, that we want to get out in front of our members. In alphabetical order by ticker symbol: BIIB, BMY, MRK, NVS. By Callum Turcan Biogen Inc (BIIB) reported third quarter 2019 earnings on Tuesday October 22 that easily beat both top and bottom line estimates. That was partially due to strong sales at its SPINRAZA offering, which is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy. Shares of BIIB rocketed higher during the trading session as investors priced in the upside that Biogen’s Aducanumab treatment could generate, with the company announcing that it was going to ask the US … Read more

In the News: Amazon, GE, Kraft-Heinz, Disney, CVS Health, Gilead

We’re reiterating the large range of fair value outcomes for Amazon. We’re staying far away from General Electric and Kraft-Heinz. Netflix may have its back against the ropes with Disney Plus. CVS Health and Gilead were two setbacks in the newsletter portfolios in the past, but we kept losses to a minimum and new ideas more than offset the weakness. The Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio continues to do very well. By Brian Nelson, CFA Amazon (AMZN) Image Shown: Amazon has a large range of fair value outcomes, and shares are trading roughly in line with our fair value estimate. The e-commerce powerhouse’s shares have come in aggressively since it reported second-quarter results July 25. We get a lot of questions … Read more

Mylan Surges, Why Fair Value Estimates Matter

Image Source: Mylan NV – IR Presentation By Callum Turcan On July 29, Mylan NV (MYL) agreed to merge with Pfizer Inc’s (PFE) Upjohn unit to form a much larger and more diversified entity in the pharmaceutical industry, selling such products as Mylan’s EpiPen and Pfizer’s Viagra. Shares of MYL jumped by a double-digit percentage on the news, and we aren’t surprised given how Mylan has traded well below our $31 per share fair value estimate for some time now. What Mylan needed was a catalyst to get the market to take notice (of its estimated future free cash flows), and Pfizer seems to have offered it one by renewing investor interest in the name. Pro forma for this transaction, … Read more

Berkshire’s Buybacks, More Earnings Reports — In alphabetical order by ticker symbol: ANET, ATVI, BRK.B, CHD, DWDP, DNKN, GILD, HBI, K, TEVA — Arista Networks (ANET): Arista reported a solid first-quarter report May 2, but its outlook for the second quarter left something to be desired. The cloud networking company could offer a hint to what to expect from Cisco (CSCO) when it reports in the coming week or so. Arista’s revenue during the first quarter was fine, jumping 26%, and earnings per share also handily beat, but top-line guidance for the second quarter came in at $600-$610 million, below consensus forecasts. It’s still early in the year to jump to any conclusions, but investors in Cisco should perhaps set expectations … Read more
