Theft Becoming a Huge Problem for Retailers

Image Source: Ben Schuman Theft has always been a problem for retailers, but it has never been as big of a problem as it has been in recent quarters. Emboldened by the lack of police response and employees sometimes getting fired for confronting shoplifters, retail organized crime is on the rise. We’re not talking theft in the millions, or billions, but likely in the tens of billions per year or more across the U.S. Some attribute the rise of organized retail crime to the pandemic, which paved the way for shoplifters to post their loot online in order to make a quick buck. Some retailers are especially feeling the pinch, and recent commentary reveals just how bad retail theft (shrink) … Read more

Not Expecting Much From Consumer Staples Stocks

By Brian Nelson, CFA Within the discounted cash-flow [DCF] modeling process (also known as enterprise valuation, or the free cash flow to the firm model), there are two primary sources of cash-based intrinsic value: net cash on the balance sheet and future expected enterprise free cash flows. The sum of net cash on the balance sheet and the present value of future enterprise free cash flows divided by weighted average diluted shares outstanding results in a fair value estimate per share, which then can be divided by earnings to arrive at a value-derived price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. Only when this value-derived P/E ratio is compared to the price-observed P/E ratio—the latter calculated as price divided by estimated earnings–can a company then be … Read more

Stock Report Updates

In our 16-page equity research reports, we offer a fair value estimate for each company based on a rigorous and transparent discounted cash flow process, assess the attractiveness of a stock based on a firm-specific margin of safety, and provide a relative valuation comparison in the context of the company’s industry and peers. Each report includes detailed pro forma financial statements, explicit fundamental forecasts, and scenario analysis. A cross section of the ValueCreation and ValueRisk ratings provides a financial assessment of a company’s business quality (competitive position), while the ValueTrend and Economic Castle ratings offer insight into the trajectory of a firm’s economic profit creation (ROIC versus WACC). Included in each 16-page report is a company’s rating on the Valuentum Buying Index (VBI), a methodology that combines rigorous financial and valuation analysis with … Read more

Walmart’s ‘Great Value’ Brand and Position Across Retail Never Stronger

Image: Walmart’s shares have gotten back on track.  By Brian Nelson, CFA  Grocer Aldi may have been the greatest beneficiary of the past 12-18 months due to consumers trading down from lofty grocery prices, but Walmart (WMT) has kept pace, in our view, as Target (TGT) struggles from a public relations nightmare and membership warehouses like Costco (COST) feel the need to cut down on membership card sharing as comparable store sales weaken. We think Walmart’s ‘Great Value’ brand and position across bargain retail has never been stronger, and its share price reflects a company that is at a sweet spot of consumer demand as rivals continue to struggle. The high end of our fair value estimate range of … Read more

Public Domain “We firmly believe that an investment in a bank must come with the acknowledgement of the distinct possibility that another financial crisis may occur at an unknown time in the future. Why? Banks do not keep a 100% reserve against deposits. Our good friend George Bailey knew this very well when he tried to discourage Bedford Falls residents from making a “run” on the famous and beloved Building and Loan.” – Brian Nelson, CFA, September 4, 2013   SUMMARY OF CHANGES Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Johnson & Johnson (JNJ): 4%-6% à 0% Exxon Mobil (XOM): 4%-6% à 0% Chevron (CVX) 3%-5% à 0% Dollar General (DG): 3%-5% à 0% Korn/Ferry (KFY): 1%-2% à 0% … Read more

Markets Bounce Off Technical Support But Not Out of the Woods

Image: The market-cap weighted S&P 500 (SPY) bounced off technical support last week, both the 200-day moving average as well as the breakout of the downtrend line, but while this may push off any leg down in the near term, we won’t hesitate to “raise cash” on a few newsletter portfolio names if a breakthrough of support to the downside happens. Image Source: TradingView By Brian Nelson, CFA The 200-day moving average remains a key technical level for the market-cap weighted S&P 500. The risks that the market may break through both the 200-day moving average and the breakout of the technical downtrend line remain elevated, but the past week showed a successful test of technical support levels, in our … Read more

Walmart Warns: “Prices Are Still High and There Is Considerable Pressure on the Consumer”

Image Source: Mike Mozart By Brian Nelson, CFA As we wrote in “The Fed ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” in early January, the trade-down trends that we’re seeing in big box retail and with groceries, more generally, are interesting. Inflation started to accelerate with food-at-home prices moving aggressively higher in early 2022, and consumers have been trading down to better value. It probably wasn’t until egg prices soared, however — driven in part by a shortage of egg laying chickens (not just inflationary pressures) – that tipped everyday consumers to budget more cautiously, and the largest big box retailer in Walmart (WMT) is seeing this impact first-hand. Here’s what’s happening on the ground, per Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon on the … Read more

Consumers Feeling the Pinch; S&P 500 Bounces Off Technical Resistance; Elasticities Breaking Down for Staples Stocks

By Brian Nelson, CFA Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is the latest big tech company to announce big job cuts. The company that is still working to close its deal with Activision (ATVI) announced that it would slash 10,000 jobs, or about 4.5% of its workforce. The unemployment rate in the U.S. stands at just 3.5%, as recorded in December 2022, so even though we’re witnessing quite a number of layoffs in Silicon Valley, the labor markets are still very, very healthy. Those being laid off are finding jobs rather quickly, too. According to the WSJ, “about 79% of workers recently hired after a tech-company layoff or termination landed their new job within three months of starting their search.” Businesses have been … Read more
