What Is Gold Really Worth?

“What motivates most gold purchasers is their belief that the ranks of the fearful will grow. During the past decade that belief has proved correct. Beyond that, the rising price has on its own generated additional buying enthusiasm, attracting purchasers who see the rise as validating an investment thesis. As ‘bandwagon’ investors join any party, they create their own truth – for a while.” — Warren Buffett (2011 annual letter to shareholders) Image: Gold prices have surged since 2020, and they recently hit an all-time high. Image Source: TradingView By Brian Nelson, CFA Stocks have quite a few variables that can affect their intrinsic value estimate, but what about gold’s intrinsic value? Does gold even have value? And if so, how … Read more

Don’t Let “Them” Spin the Narrative

By Brian Nelson, CFA Let’s call it how it is: 2022 was an absolute nightmare for the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio. During the year, the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio was down 16.9%, according to data from the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund Shares (VBIAX). During 2022, the S&P 500 (SPY) index was down 18.2%, meaning that the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio, despite allocating to 40% bonds, captured over 90% of the downside risk. Modern portfolio theory is dead: Stocks have done far better than bonds during upswings, and only slightly worse during downturns. The risk/reward for the 60/40 stock/bond portfolio just doesn’t add up anymore. Bond prices did not move inversely to stock prices during the COVID-19 meltdown, and they did not move inversely … Read more

Newmont Reports Challenging 3Q, But the Stock Is a Key Diversifier in the Dividend Growth Newsletter Portfolio

Image Source: Newmont Mining By Brian Nelson, CFA Gold has not necessarily lived up to its merits as an inflation hedge recently, with the SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD) falling nearly 10% so far this year, but that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t have valuable diversification qualities; the market, as measured by the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (SPY), is down over 19% through November 1. Our favorite gold miner and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio holding, Newmont Corp (NEM) has fared worse this year, but we still like it as a key diversifier in the newsletter portfolio. Newmont Corp reported third-quarter results November 1 that weren’t great, but management noted that it remains on track to “achieve full-year guidance of … Read more

The Stock Market Is Nearing Technical Support Levels

Image: This year has been a difficult one for equity investors, but the selling pressure that has been common in the markets may start to slow as broader indices such as the S&P 500 begin to approach technical support levels. On the S&P 500, we think there is substantial technical support in the 3,200-3,500 range, which to us suggests that further near-term downside may be limited. The S&P 500 closed at 3,674.84 on Friday, June 17, and we think fair value is much higher. By Brian Nelson, CFA  It’s been difficult to watch the stock market give up much of the gains reaped over the past year or so during the selling barrage that has occurred thus far in 2022. … Read more

Valuentum Weekly: Outsized Energy Exposure Continues to Buoy Newsletter Portfolios

Image: Light crude oil futures once traded for roughly -$40 (negative $40) during the COVID-19 crisis, but have now rocketed to more than $120 in recent trading. Image Source: TradingView. This note was emailed to members Sunday, March 6, 2022. Markets   The S&P 500, as measured by the SPY, is down 9% year-to-date, a modest pullback, in our view, particularly in light of the fantastic performance the past few years. Though not necessarily welcome, a down year every now and then for the broader market indexes and a modest bear market can only be expected, at times. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, as measured by the DIA, is down more than 7% year-to-date (not too bad), while the Nasdaq–as measured by the … Read more

The company’s management team is incredibly shareholder friendly (its quarterly payout has grown from … Read more
