Economic Commentary: Apple $225+, Brokers Tumble, Auto Sales Look Tired

“Though all signs point to increased volatility, we maintain our view that we’re well-positioned in the newsletter portfolios, and the ideas highlighted in the Exclusive publication consider the backdrop economic conditions we closely monitor.” — Brian Nelson, CFA There has been plenty of news in the markets this week, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA) experiencing significant declines only to bounce back a bit. From where we stand, the markets look vulnerable technically, but that doesn’t mean we’re looking to change anything in the newsletter portfolios. We have some dry powder in the form of a ~10% cash weighting in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio. The disappointing September ADP jobs report added to lower-than-expected ISM (Institute … Read more

Economic Roundtable: “Value” Versus “Growth” Rotation

Tickerized for the DIA. “This kind of trading activity could be setting the stage for a big quant fund blow up, if the kind of leverage it takes to move the markets to this magnitude was applied. All it may take is for the B/M “value” factor to continue to suffer in the coming 12-18 months–it’s possible we could see a few quant firms go belly up. My guess is that market participants are paying very close attention to this activity, and if they “smell blood,” things could get ugly.” – Brian Nelson, CFA Earlier this week, the markets experienced significant internal “rotation,” as cyclicals and “value” stocks materially outperformed their defensive and “growth” counterparts, all the while the broader … Read more

A Tale of Two Big Agricultural Industries: Protein Producers Win and Farm Equipment Manufacturers Lose After Recent USDA Report

Image Shown: The tale of two big agricultural companies in one chart, with shares of poultry producer Sanderson Farms Inc (SAFM) shooting up on Monday, August 12, as chicken feed prices fell after a recent USDA report (which sent corn prices sharply lower) while shares of agricultural equipment manufacturer AGCO Corporation (AGCO) tanked as the market priced in continued pressure on US farm incomes and the dynamic impact that has on demand for farm equipment. By Callum Turcan On August 12, the USDA released a report that stated US farmers had planted more corn than expected at 90 million acres (2.6% higher than consensus estimates) and that forecasted corn yields were also higher than expected at 169.5 bushels an acre … Read more

Thought Piece: The Hidden Advantage

As activist investing proliferates, investors are becoming more and more familiar with celebrity investing gurus such as Carl Icahn and David Einhorn. Let’s examine how these investing giants have carved out a unique structural advantage over mom-and-pop investors. This article was originally published in June 2014. By Brian Nelson, CFA Wouldn’t it be great to load up on options and then announce to the world that you’ve done so, thereby generating tremendous gains as other investors pile into the stock driving its price higher? I think most investors either believe that such behavior is mere fantasy, or would love to have this significant influence for their own use, assuming it was legal. Perhaps to your surprise, this behavior is neither … Read more

McDonald’s Not on the Value Menu

We can’t get anywhere close to McDonald’s share price with our discounted cash-flow valuation process. That doesn’t mean that shares are destined to fall, but it may indicate that the stock has pulled forward future returns. In any case, investors in McDonald’s should be cautious. By Brian Nelson, CFA McDonald’s (MCD) has done a wonderful job in years past, pursuing all-day breakfast and transitioning (even) more to a franchise business model, but these changes are now behind the fast-food restaurant. Our fair value estimate for McDonald’s is in the mid-$150s (its shares are trading over $200), and frankly, we’re having a very difficult time coming anywhere close to how high the market is valuing shares. During the firm’s second-quarter results, … Read more

Beyond Meat’s Market: $5 Billion or $1.5 Trillion?

Image: The Beyond Burger accounted for about 70% of the company’s sales in 2018. The big question: how big is Beyond Meat’s opportunity? Is it $5 billion or $1.5 trillion? By Valuentum Analysts Shares of Beyond Meat Inc (BYND), one of the fastest-growing plant-based meat companies, have exploded higher since the meatless-meat producer went public in May. While this isn’t a stock we normally would like given the short operating history and lofty market expectations, we wanted to draw attention to the enormous potential Beyond Meat is targeting. As of the market close on June 10, Beyond Meat had a market capitalization of $10.1 billion. We estimate that if Beyond Meat is able to generate an adjusted EBITDA margin in … Read more

Cracker Barrel ‘s Lofty (and Hidden) Dividend Yield

Image Source: Cracker Barrel Presentation (10/17) By Brian Nelson, CFA Incredible. Cracker Barrel (CBRL) just issued announced another special dividend, to the tune of $3 per share. This special dividend is in addition to the regular quarterly dividend of $1.30 per share, which was increased 4% from the previous quarterly dividend of $1.25 per share. All in, annualizing the new quarterly rate and including the special dividend in the sum, Cracker Barrel yields nearly 5% at the time of this writing. You won’t hear many talking about the firm’s lofty yield because a large part of it has been from the special-dividend variety, which has been recurring for the past many years. On a fundamental basis, we have no qualms … Read more
