Reflecting on Two of Our Favorite Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Holdings

As we get closer to finishing out 2019, let’s take a look at two of the big winners in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio this year: Facebook and Alphabet. What a comeback Facebook has made since the summer of 2018! On the basis of our fair value estimate, we expect the company to surpass new highs. Alphabet just hit an all-time high last month, too! By Callum Turcan Facebook Image Shown: Shares of Facebook Inc have skyrocketed over the past year as the market shrugged off near-term political/regulatory headwinds and looked out towards the future, with an eye towards Facebook’s strong free cash flow growth trajectory and pristine balance sheet. Facebook Inc (FB) is a company we’ve been pounding the … Read more

Our Reports on Stocks in the Internet Content and Catalog Retail Industry

Image Source: Robert Scoble Structure of the Internet & Catalog Retail Industry The Internet and catalog retail industry benefits as a whole from the secular trend toward consumer digital (online) consumption. The industry consists of a number of exclusive online retailers led by Amazon and businesses that offer Internet travel services such as Booking Holdings, formerly Priceline. Online auctions are dominated by eBay, and the firm benefits from both a buyer-seller driven network effect and secular online consumption growth. The industry generates high returns on investment due to minimal capital costs, but the landscape will be vastly different in the decades ahead. Still, we like the group. Tech Earnings Roundup: AAPL, FB, GOOG

By Callum Turcan Several large tech companies reported earnings this week including three of the top holdings in our Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios. Apple On October 30, Apple Inc (AAPL) reported fourth quarter earnings for fiscal 2019 (three month period ended September 28) that saw GAAP revenues shift higher by 2% versus the same period last year, hitting $64.0 billion. Its services revenues jumped up by 18% year-over-year while its products revenues declined by a bit over 1% year-over-year, highlighting Apple’s focus on higher margin services sales opportunities. Even so, Apple’s GAAP gross margin fell by over 30 basis points year-over-year due in part to the negative impact of the US-China trade war on top of … Read more

Amazon Contends with Rising Operating Expenses and Shrinking Gross Margins

Image Shown: Shares of Amazon Inc have stumbled so far in 2019 as the headwinds from rising tariffs, largely a product of the US-China trade war, combined with a competitive cloud computing landscape put downward pressure on its profitability levels. By Callum Turcan Amazon (AMZN) reported third quarter 2019 earnings after the market close on Thursday October 24 that underwhelmed investor expectations and saw shares plummet after-hours. However, shares of AMZN recovered somewhat throughout the trading session on Friday October 25. While GAAP revenues climbed 24% year-over-year to $70.0 billion in the third quarter, GAAP operating income declined 15% year-over-year to $3.2 billion due in part to rising operating expenses (growth in marketing, technology and content, and G&A expenses outpaced … Read more

An Update on Facebook’s Libra as Roughly Two Dozen Members Sign On

Image Shown: Facebook has room to run higher, with or without Libra. While several large financial technology and payment processing firms have recently made it clear they no longer want to be a part of the nascent Libra Association, that didn’t stop roughly two dozen members from signing the group’s charter in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 15. We really must stress that our discounted free cash flow models for Facebook don’t take in account the upside its proposed asset-back cryptocurrency Libra might generate. This opportunity represents pure upside to our forecasts, and we continue to like Facebook as a top holding in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. By Callum Turcan Regulatory and political fears have apparently scared off several companies … Read more

In the News: Second-Quarter Earnings Season Begins

Second-quarter earnings season is upon us. The markets aren’t expecting much growth. Core industrial names may not fare well, but thus far, big pharma is solid. We’re not making any changes to the newsletter portfolios. By Brian Nelson, CFA We’re off to the races with second-quarter earnings season. The markets aren’t expecting much, with the consensus for S&P 500 (SPY) companies to experience a 3% earnings decline, according to FactSet. If this happens, this would mark the first time S&P 500 companies, in aggregate, would have posted year-over-year declines since the first half of 2016. The markets have rallied considerably since then, and despite the strong earnings expansion aided in part by corporate tax cuts, the 12-month forward P/E ratio … Read more
